What is Ghosted and Un-ghosted page in Sharepoint?

Ghosted: A page whose contents are not stored in the content database but are read from a site definition file.A page that has not been customized.

Un-ghosted page: A page that has modified from the site definition file,an d whose contents
are stored in the content database.These are also know as "customized" pages in Microsoft office Sharepoint Service.

What is a SharePoint site definition? What is ghosted (uncustomized) and unghosted (customized)?

  
SharePoint site definitions are the core set of functionality from which SharePoint site are built from, building from the SiteTemplates directory in the SharePoint 12 hive. Site definitions allow several sites to inherit from a core set of files on the file system, although appear to have unique pages, thereby increasing performance and allowing changes that happen to a site propagate to all sites that inherit from a site definition. Ghosted means that when SharePoint creates a new site it will reference the files in the related site definition upon site provisioning. Unghosted means that the site has been edited with an external editor, and therefore the customizations are instead stored in the database, breaking the inheritance of those files from the file system. You added a SharePoint Web part to page, and now, when you go to the page, get an error message. To get the page working again, what need to do?

  
Go to the page with the error and add

?Contents=1

to the end of the page's URL. If the URL already has a "?" then add this instead to the end of the URL:

&Contents=1

You will now see a list of all of the Web Parts on the page and can now delete the offending Web Part.

Here is an example for a site URL that ends in aspx:

Sharepoint page Life Cycle:

1.User request the SharePoint page using http
2.Asp.Net calls the WSS file Provider
3.WSS file Provider return the pages from file or database
4.page is parsed by SafeMode parsor if required
5.Returned page is compiled by Asp.Net compiler
6.WSS file Provider collects the page layout class and complies it
7.Asp.Net engine adds SharePoint Context Data to the site meta data and retrieves the associatedmaster page.

What are Un-ghosted pages?

  
Those pages which are stored in the content database are referred to as un-ghosted pages. All the un-ghosted pages are specific to that SharePoint web application only. i.e. changes done in an un-ghosted page will not reflect in other web applications within that SharePoint server.
