How can we submit from without a submit button?

We can use a simple JavaScript code linked to an event trigger of any form field.In the JavaScript code, we can call the document.form.submit() function to submitthe form. For example

In the page load event I assigned DropDownList's DataSource property to a valid list. On the submit button click.. the same DataSource property is coming as null. Why?
