How do we get the name of the Oracle database instance that we have connected to through an SQL statement?

We can retrieve the instance name using the sys_context function.

To retrieve the Oracle instance name, we can execute the following SQL statement:

select sys_context('USERENV','DB_NAME') as Instance

You are creating a database on multiple disks that will be queried intensively by users. What are some steps that you can take to improve performance and avoid disk contention?

You could use disk striping (RAID) to increase performance.

A secondary strategy would be to use filegroups to improve performance, especially placing the transaction log file(s) on a separate disk from the data file(s) to avoid disk contention as SQL Server queries the database and records actions in the log. Also, filegroups could be used to separate a portion of the data files requiring frequent backups because they are actively modified.

What are the different steps to access a database through ADO.NET?

Create a connection to the database using a connection object.
Open the Database Connection.
Invoke a command to create a Dataset object using an adapter object.
Use the Dataset object in code to display data or to change items in the database.

Close the database connection.

Database Concurrency in Sql Server.

When two or more user try to update same type of data in a table then Database Concurrency helps in this situation.

There are 2 types of Database Concurrency

Pessimistic: When one user try to change the data with pessimistic concurrency then a lock is placed on the data in a table so that another user cannot change data. when one user finishes then other user can able to change.

Optimistic: When two user works on the same data in a table and one change that data first then second user cannot change that same data becasue the which he have using is allready changed so he cannot do the change becasue change apply to another data that is changed by first user. (More...)

Explain architecture of Notification Services?

Notification Services applications are based on a subscriber/subscription model.
The Key components in a Notification Services application are

Subscriber: A user or application that requests and receives the notification
Subscription: A request for information, delivery mechanism, and destination for requested notifications. For example change of a stock price.
Event: A piece of information, in which the subscriber is interested. For example as soon as a stock price has changed an event can be generated that's processed within SQLNS.
Notification: A message containing the information requested by the subscriber in the subscription.

SQLNS executes the following steps whenever it generates a new notification and sends it to registered subscribers:

.Subscribers create subscriptions with a subscription management application, such as an ASP.NET or Windows Forms front end.
.Subscription management is the only part of an SQLNS application where users or applications are actively involved in the process. You generate subscriptions using a managed assembly shipped with SQLNS.
.The Notification Application collects events, which are processed within the SQLNS application.
.SQLNS uses T-SQL statements to assign events to the subscriptions registered in the first step.
.SQLNS generates new notifications whenever it finds an assignment.
.A Formatter formats the new notification, and SQLNS delivers it through a delivery channel to the registered target device of the subscriber. (More...)
