What is VDL (View Definition Language)?

Posted By :Shashi Ray     Posted Date :October 24, 2008    Points :10   Category :Others
It specifies user views and their mappings to the conceptual schema.

What is DDL (Data Definition Language)?

A data base schema is specifies by a set of definitions expressed by a special language called DDL. (More...)

What is SDL (Storage Definition Language)?

This language is to specify the internal schema. This language may specify the mapping between two schemas. (More...)

What is Data Storage - Definition Language?

The storage structures and access methods used by database system are specified by a set of definition in a special type of DDL called data storage-definition language. (More...)

What is the benefit of using the WITH CHECK OPTION option in your view definition?

The option forces modification statements that are executed against the view to adhere to the criteria that is set within the SELECT statement that defines the view. (More...)

What is the Common Language Runtime (CLR)?

The Common Language Runtime is the execution engine for .NET Framework applications.
It provides a number of services, including the following:
1. Code management (loading and execution)
2. Application memory isolation
3. Verification of type safety
4. Conversion of IL to native code
5. Access to metadata (enhanced type information)
6. Managing memory for managed objects
7. Enforcement of code access security
8. Exception handling, including cross-language exceptions
9. Interoperation between managed code, COM objects, and pre-existing DLLs (unmanaged code and data)
10. Automation of object layout
11. Support for developer services (profiling, debugging, and so on) (More...)

What is the Common Language Specification (CLS)?

The Common Language Specification is a set of constructs and constraints that serves as a guide for library writers and compiler writers. It allows libraries to be fully usable from any language supporting the CLS, and for those languages to integrate with each other. The Common Language Specification is a subset of the common type system. The Common Language Specification is also important to application developers who are writing code that will be used by other developers. When developers design publicly accessible APIs following the rules of the CLS, those APIs are easily used from all other programming languages that target the Common Language Runtime. (More...)

What is the Microsoft Intermediate Language (MSIL)?

MSIL is the CPU-independent instruction set into which .NET Framework programs are compiled. It contains instructions for loading, storing, initializing, and calling methods on objects.
Combined with metadata and the common type system, MSIL allows for true cross-language integration.
Prior to execution, MSIL is converted to machine code. It is not interpreted. (More...)

What is a view?

If we have several tables in a db and we want to view only specific columns from specific tables we can go for views. It would also suffice the needs of security some times allowing specfic users to see only specific columns based on the permission that we can configure on the view. Views also reduce the effort that is required for writing queries to access specific columns every time. (More...)

If you are using C language to implement the heterogeneous linked list, what pointer type will you use?

The heterogeneous linked list contains different data types in its nodes and we need a link, pointer to connect them. It is not possible to use ordinary pointers for this. So we go for void pointer. Void pointer is capable of storing pointer to any type as it is a generic pointer type. (More...)

What is a view? How it is related to data independence?

A view may be thought of as a virtual table, that is, a table that does not really exist in its own right but is instead derived from one or more underlying base table. In other words, there is no stored file that direct represents the view instead a definition of view is stored in data dictionary.

Growth and restructuring of base tables is not reflected in views. Thus the view can insulate users from the effects of restructuring and growth in the database. Hence accounts for logical data independence. (More...)

What is DML (Data Manipulation Language)?

This language that enable user to access or manipulate data as organised by appropriate data model.

1.Procedural DML or Low level: DML requires a user to specify what data are needed and how to get those data.
2.Non-Procedural DML or High level: DML requires a user to specify what data are needed without specifying how to get those data. (More...)

Session state vs View state

In some cases, using view state is not feasible. The alternative for view state is session state. Session state is employed under the following situations:
. Large amounts of data - View state tends to increase the size of both the HTML page sent to the browser and the size of form posted back. Hence session state is used.
. Secure data - Though the view state data is encoded and may be encrypted, it is better and secure if no sensitive data is sent to the client. Thus, session state is a more secure option.
. Problems in serializing of objects into view state - View state is efficient for a small set of data. Other types like DataSet are slower and can generate a very large view state (More...)

Do I have to use one programming language for all my Web pages in .NET?

No. Each page can be written in a different programming language if you want, even in the same application. If you are creating source code files and putting them in the \App_Code folder to be compiled at run time, all the code in must be in the same language. However, you can create subfolders in the \App_Code folder and use the subfolders to store components written in different programming languages. (More...)

What is a CLS(Common Language Specification)?

This is a subset of the CTS which all .NET languages are expected to support. It was always a dream of Microsoft to unite all different languages in to one umbrella and CLS is one step towards that. Microsoft has defined CLS which are nothing but guidelines that language to follow so that it can communicate with other .NET languages in a seamless manner. (More...)
