difference between backup file and .stp file in sharepoint site

Posted By :Amit Mehra     Posted Date :April 18, 2010    Points :10   Category :SharePoint
A backup file is more like a DB snapshot (if you are talking about the backup operation of STSADM)

You can save a site with our without content as template and can create other sites based upon that site template. For that first you have to save your site as a template which will be saved with extension .STP, OOB there is limitation of 10MB in size but u can increase the size upto 2 GB using STSADM command.

What is a SharePoint Solution File? How does it differ from WebPart .cab files in legacy development? What does it contain?

A SharePoint solution file is essentially a .cabinet file with all a developers ustom componets suffixed with a .wsp extension that aids in deployment. The big difference with SharePoint solution files is is that a solution:
allows deployment to all WFE's in a farm
is highly manageable from the interface allowing deployment, retraction, and versioning
Can package all types of assets like site definitions, feature definitions (and associated components), Webparts, etc.
Can provide Code Access Security provisioning to avoid GAC deployments
And much more..

What is a .ddf file and what does it have to do with SharePoint Solution creation?

A .ddf file is a data directive file and is used when building the SharePoint solution bundle specifying the source files and their destination locations. The important thing for someone to understand is that the .ddf file will be passed as a parameter to the MAKECAB utility to orchestrate construction of the SharePoint solution file.

Before you RESTORE or ATTACH the Database/backup file on Production server from other source, What are the things you should do ?

The following are the basic recommendations when attaching or restoring Database(s) from other source:

1. Do not ATTACH or RESTORE databases from unknown sources.

2. These databases could contain malicious code that might execute unintended Transact-SQL code or cause errors by modifying the schema or the physical database structure.

3. Before you use a database from an unknown source, run DBCC CHECKDB on the database on a nonproduction server first.

4. Examine the code, like stored procedures or other user-defined code.

5. If you feel everything is fine thenonly proceed with production server.

what difference between EXPORT and BACKUP of site operation

1) stsadm -o backup/restore URL-http://serverName

With the URL and filename parameters, it allows you to backup site or site collection
when we restore the file then it generates the new GUID for the site collection

2) stsadm -o import/export URL-http://serverName

This is the only standard operation to store the site, it can also to be used to export the site
but here the drawback is as:
It not only changes the GUID of the site or site collection but it also changes the GUIDs of LIST, WEPART, SUBSITES and ITEMS (More...)

What are safe controls, and what type of information, is placed in that element in a SharePoint web.config file?

When you deploy a WebPart to SharePoint, you must first make it as a safe control to use within SharePoint in the web.config file. Entries made in the safe controls element of SharePoint are encountered by the SharePointHandler object and will be loaded in the SharePoint environment properly, those not will not be loaded and will throw an error.
In the generic safe control entry (this is general, there could be more), there is generally the Assembly name, the namespace, the public key token numeric, the typename, and the safe declaration (whether it is safe or not). There are other optional elements. (More...)

What files gets created on a file system, when a Site collection is created ?

Ans. Windows SharePoint Services does not create any files or folders on the file system when the site collection or sites are created; everything is created in the content database.
