What are the factors that affect the performance of NIC?

Posted By :Abhisek Panda     Posted Date :January 30, 2010    Points :10   Category :Networking
The following factors affect the performance of NIC,

Bus Speed :- It depends on ISA or PCI slot. PCI has higher speed.

Memory :- More the memory, better the performance.

Memory Access Method :- DMA is faster than I/O method.

How does non-deterministic garbage collection affect my code?

For most programmers, having a garbage collector (and using garbage collected objects) means that you never have to worry about deallocating memory, or reference counting objects, even if you use sophisticated data structures. It does require some changes in coding style, however, if you typically deallocate system resources (file handles, locks, and so forth) in the same block of code that releases the memory for an object. With a garbage collected object you should provide a method that releases the system resources deterministically (that is, under your program control) and let the garbage collector release the memory when it compacts the working set. ATM - Performance ?

1. Throughput - Rate at which ATM cells depart from the ATM switch.

2.Connection Blocking Probability - Defines the probability of Non-availability of enough resources for generating physical
connections between inlet and outlet .

3. Cell Loss Probability - Defines a no. of data cell that can be handled by a switch queue.

4. Switching Delay - Time required for cell to pass through the ATM switch.

5. Cell Delay Variation - Probability that the switching delay of the ATM switch exceeds the certain value . (More...)

How do you improve the performance of a server?

First check the processor and memory usage to see that processor is not above 80% utilization and memory not above 40-45% utilization then check the disk utilization using Performance Monitor, Secondly, use SQL Profiler to check for the users and current SQL activities and jobs running which might be a problem. Third would be to run UPDATE_STATISTICS command to update the indexes (More...)

Performance wise which one is the best? IN,EXISTS or INNER JOIN

It depends.

Generally speaking JOINs are much better than EXISTS & EXISTS is better than IN, performance wise.

If your result set is small then you can use IN or EXISTS.

But if result set contains a large set of records, then use JOINS.

You are creating a database on multiple disks that will be queried intensively by users. What are some steps that you can take to improve performance and avoid disk contention?

You could use disk striping (RAID) to increase performance.

A secondary strategy would be to use filegroups to improve performance, especially placing the transaction log file(s) on a separate disk from the data file(s) to avoid disk contention as SQL Server queries the database and records actions in the log. Also, filegroups could be used to separate a portion of the data files requiring frequent backups because they are actively modified.
