What is MAC address?

It is the address for a device as it is identified at the Media Access Control (MAC) layer in the network architecture.

MAC address is usually stored in ROM on the network adapter card and is unique.

IP addresses are divided into five classes as below.

Class A: 0.0.0.0 - 126.255.255.255(Can work with a network of very large hosts.)
Class B: 128.0.0.0 - 191.255.255.255(Can work in medium sized networks)
Class C: 192.0.0.0 - 223.255.255.255(Used in small LANs)
Class D: 224.0.0.0 - 239.255.255.255(Used for multicasting)

How a pointer stores address?

  
A pointer is a variable which stores address of other variable. Pointer only stores the first byte of address and then we can find upcoming bytes according to the size of the variable.

For example if a variable of integer type is being accessed by a pointer. So the pointer will only store the first byte of the address and as integer datatype takes two bytes memory the next byte of address location can be find out by adding 1 to the first byte of the address. (More...)

Yes, since this is a Web Application level setting. You would iterate through each SPWebApplication in the SPWebApplication collection, and then use the appropriate property calls (OutboundMailServiceInstance) in order to return settings regarding the mail service such as the SMTP address.

Side Question: I got asked if there are other ways to send emails from SharePoint. The answer is yes, there is. You can use the SendMail method from the SPutility class to send simple emails, however it is not as robust as using the System.Net.Mail functionality since it doesn't allow things like setting priorities on the email.
