What is the Microsoft Intermediate Language (MSIL)?

Posted By :Shashi Ray     Posted Date :September 24, 2008    Points :10   Category :.NET Framework
MSIL is the CPU-independent instruction set into which .NET Framework programs are compiled. It contains instructions for loading, storing, initializing, and calling methods on objects.
Combined with metadata and the common type system, MSIL allows for true cross-language integration.
Prior to execution, MSIL is converted to machine code. It is not interpreted.

What is MSIL, IL?

When compiling to managed code, the compiler translates your source code into Microsoft intermediate language (MSIL), which is a CPU-independent set of instructions that can be efficiently converted to native code. MSIL includes instructions for loading, storing, initializing, and calling methods on objects, as well as instructions for arithmetic and logical operations, control flow, direct memory access, exception handling, and other operations. Microsoft intermediate language (MSIL) is a language used as the output of a number of compilers and as the input to a just-in-time (JIT) compiler. The common language runtime includes a JIT compiler for converting MSIL to native code. (More...)

What is Active Directory? What is the namespace used to access the Microsoft Active Directories? What are ADSI Directories?

Active Directory Service Interfaces (ADSI) is a programmatic interface for Microsoft Windows Active Directory. It enables your applications to interact with diverse directories on a network, using a single interface. Visual Studio .NET and the .NET Framework make it easy to add ADSI functionality with the DirectoryEntry and DirectorySearcher components.

Using ADSI, you can create applications that perform common administrative tasks, such as backing up databases, accessing printers, and administering user accounts. (More...)

What is the Common Language Runtime (CLR)?

The Common Language Runtime is the execution engine for .NET Framework applications.
It provides a number of services, including the following:
1. Code management (loading and execution)
2. Application memory isolation
3. Verification of type safety
4. Conversion of IL to native code
5. Access to metadata (enhanced type information)
6. Managing memory for managed objects
7. Enforcement of code access security
8. Exception handling, including cross-language exceptions
9. Interoperation between managed code, COM objects, and pre-existing DLLs (unmanaged code and data)
10. Automation of object layout
11. Support for developer services (profiling, debugging, and so on) (More...)

What is the Common Language Specification (CLS)?

The Common Language Specification is a set of constructs and constraints that serves as a guide for library writers and compiler writers. It allows libraries to be fully usable from any language supporting the CLS, and for those languages to integrate with each other. The Common Language Specification is a subset of the common type system. The Common Language Specification is also important to application developers who are writing code that will be used by other developers. When developers design publicly accessible APIs following the rules of the CLS, those APIs are easily used from all other programming languages that target the Common Language Runtime. (More...)

If you are using C language to implement the heterogeneous linked list, what pointer type will you use?

The heterogeneous linked list contains different data types in its nodes and we need a link, pointer to connect them. It is not possible to use ordinary pointers for this. So we go for void pointer. Void pointer is capable of storing pointer to any type as it is a generic pointer type. (More...)

What is DDL (Data Definition Language)?

A data base schema is specifies by a set of definitions expressed by a special language called DDL. (More...)

What is VDL (View Definition Language)?

It specifies user views and their mappings to the conceptual schema. (More...)

What is SDL (Storage Definition Language)?

This language is to specify the internal schema. This language may specify the mapping between two schemas. (More...)

What is Data Storage - Definition Language?

The storage structures and access methods used by database system are specified by a set of definition in a special type of DDL called data storage-definition language. (More...)

What is DML (Data Manipulation Language)?

This language that enable user to access or manipulate data as organised by appropriate data model.

1.Procedural DML or Low level: DML requires a user to specify what data are needed and how to get those data.
2.Non-Procedural DML or High level: DML requires a user to specify what data are needed without specifying how to get those data. (More...)

Do I have to use one programming language for all my Web pages in .NET?

No. Each page can be written in a different programming language if you want, even in the same application. If you are creating source code files and putting them in the \App_Code folder to be compiled at run time, all the code in must be in the same language. However, you can create subfolders in the \App_Code folder and use the subfolders to store components written in different programming languages. (More...)

What is MSIL or CIL , What is JIT?

? (IL)Intermediate Language is also known as MSIL (Microsoft Intermediate Language) or CIL (Common Intermediate Language). All .NET source code is compiled to IL. This IL is then converted to machine code at the point where the software is installed, or at run-time by a Just-In- Time (JIT) compiler. (More...)

What is a CLS(Common Language Specification)?

This is a subset of the CTS which all .NET languages are expected to support. It was always a dream of Microsoft to unite all different languages in to one umbrella and CLS is one step towards that. Microsoft has defined CLS which are nothing but guidelines that language to follow so that it can communicate with other .NET languages in a seamless manner. (More...)

If any .NET language has access to everything in the Base Class Library, why is there so much talk about C#?

Although in theory all .NET languages have equal access to the BCL, in reality it was left up to the language teams to determine what level of support they wanted to offer, at least beyond the minimums needed for basic compliance. In our opinion, C#, because it was developed as a new language specifically for the .NET platform, has the best support for .NET applications. (More...)
