How to avoid sluggish scrolling in a large DataGrid?

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 01, 2010    Points: 0   Category :WPF
If you have a large DataGrid with many virtualized rows and a screen full of columns, scrolling becomes very choppy - only a few updates per second. Here's a repro: Create a WPF app with this XAML: <Window x:Class="WpfApplication1.MainWindow"         xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation"         xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml"         Title="MainWindow" WindowState="Maximized">     <DataGrid Name="_grid" AutoGenerateColumns="False" ColumnWidth="60" /> </Window> and this in the code behind: public partial class MainWindow : Window {     public MainWindow()     {         InitializeComponent();                     for (int i = 0; i < 30; ++i)         {             var c = new DataGridTextColumn();             c.Binding = new Binding();             c.Header

How to avoid the memory exhausion for handling large Image files in C# ?

I have been developing a Form application for handling a large number Image files. The number of Image files could be more than 1,000 and each Image size is about 2MB. The code is as follows:

PictureBox[] pb = new PictureBox[iPictureBoxNumMax];
Label[] lb = new Label[iPictureBoxNumMax];

for (int i = 0; i < iPictureBoxNum; i++)
    lb[i] = new Label();
    pb[i] = new PictureBox();
    pb[i].ImageLocation = @sImageListAll[i];

for (int i = 0; i < iPictureBoxNum; i++)

(1) If the number of Image files is less than 300, the PictureBox generation code (the 1st portion) works. If the number is larger than that, an error message of "Memory exhausion" is displayed.

(2) However, the second protion of the code (pb[i].Dispose()) doesn't seem to clear, since the re-run of the first portion gives an error message of "Memory exhausion".

What should I do ?

WPF Datagrid Scrolling Column Headers Without Data

I have a Datagrid with enough columns that some will need to be scrolled to to see them.  The problem I am having is if the filter returns no rows, the horizontal scroll bar is greyed out and you can't scroll over to see all the column name.  I'm hoping this is an easy solution, and i'm just missing something obvious as this is my first WPF application.

Thank you for your help in advance.

Implementing Continuous Scrolling UI Pattern in ASP.NET

When you have numerous records to show, we have to resort to Paging. There is a better alternative to display voluminous data (especially read only data) while providing a better user experience & also making efficient use of server bandwidth - the Continuous Scrolling or Infinite Scrolling UI Pattern. Read on to know more about how to implement Continuous Scrolling UI Pattern in ASP.NET with a GridView.

How to format and update GridView and DataGrid rows using JQuery

The behavior described in this question is as expected. When you set text of a cell in grid, it directly affects HTML that is going to be rendered. When you set text value of a cell, it means that you are setting innerText of the cell. The column that GridView creates for command fields (Edit, Delete and Select) are a (anchor) or button elements. So you can see what will happen if you set text value in that cell. It will wipe out those link or button controls and replace them with simple text string.

Top .NET Performance Problems and how to avoid them

Every time I work with one of our .NET customers to help them with managing their application performance I come across the same problems as seen with other clients before: lots of ADO.NET queries, many hidden exceptions in core or 3rd party .NET libraries, slow 3rd party components, inefficient custom code

Use Jquery with repeater, gridview, datagrid

Before we talk about jquery inside any itemtemplate (repeater, gridview, datagrid), we need to understand the basic use of jquery functions

ListBox tricky to set in a DataGrid/GridView

Listboxes are very tricky to set selected items in grid - there is no real nice way to do it. It would have been great if Microsoft included a property that accepts an array or comma separated values - or anything! But they only allow each item in the list to be selected individually. The way to do this in a grid is a bit messy, but it is fairly simple to implement. When a row is created (as per the event), select the items of the listbox as per the datagrid source data:

How to highlight datagrid or GridView row on mouse over?

This article will show how you can Ajax with GridView to display popup messages when mouse moves over certain column. In the demo project I have added first column as an image column with a help icon in it. This kind of implements a feature that if you want more information about the row you can move mouse over this icon, a asynchronous request is sent to server for data about that row and when call returns the returned message is show as a popup message.

How to detect and avoid memory and resources leaks in .NET application

Despite what a lot of people believe, it's easy to introduce memory and resources leaks in .NET applications. The Garbage Collector, or GC for close friends, is not a magician who would completely relieve you from taking care of your memory and resources consumption.

I'll explain in this article why memory leaks exist in .NET and how to avoid them. Don't worry, I won't focus here on the inner workings of the garbage collector and other advanced characteristics of memory and resources management in .NET.

Multiple Column Dropdownlist for the ASP.NET DataGrid

Based on my previous control "Multiple Column DropDownList for ASP.NET", I received many emails asking for the same control to be used in the DataGrid for web applications. Here we go.. This control can be used as the regular MS DropDownList in the DataGrid and also as a regular dropdownlist. It has all the properties, like DataTextField, DataValueField, DataSource, SelectedIndex etc. The download file contains the samples both in VB.NET and C#. In this sample, I have used the Northwind database of SQL Server.

Using the WPF Toolkit DataGrid

WPF comes with a large number of built in controls, but from the beginning it has lacked something that many application developers find extremely important - a DataGrid. You can use the ListView to create something approximating a DataGrid

A datagrid control that can be personalized... anyone??

Hello all,

I need a datagrid control that has following features, besides other regular stuff like paging, sorting, filtering, etc:

The user should be able to -

1. Select columns to view

2. Select column Sequence

3. Select default sort column

4. Store the setting (as a view) and use it on next visit.

5. llow multiple such views to be stored for a user for future use.

All these settings should be saved and when the user comes back he gets the same settings.

Really appreciate your time and would love to get any ideas.

Persist large dataset across ASP.NET pages. No database

Can anyone give me suggestions on how to implement the following requirement?

1. A online wizard (step-by step operation) processes user requests across several ASP.NET pages.  The session data is stored in memory until the user submits the request.  Once the request is submitted, a XML file is created and the data are passed to XML.

# Case Study: The parent page has a "select" button.  Click "select" will pop up a child page.  The users can select 1000+ items from a datagrid in the child page.  Once the user clicks "confirm", the selected items in the child page will be populated to the selected item gridveiw in the parent page.  The user can keep selecting more in the child page and the selected items will be appended to the gridview in the parent page.

- What's the best way to extract strings from a text file and convert to a dataset in memory and then present it in a datagrid in UI?

- What's the best way to persist and manipulate a large dataset across pages?  Session? or ViewState? Can it be accomplished by LINQ?

The app doesn't interact with a DB.  Once the request is submitted, it will convert the in memory data to a XML file.  What technology can be used to accomplished this?&nb
