Authentication for External Users to Access MOSS 2007 Resources

Posted By:      Posted Date: September 01, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint
Our MOSS 2007 supports users from two domains that authenticate using windows.  Our clients WindowsXP in domain#1 and WindowsVista in domain#2 (which has presented problems authenticating to MOSS 2007.  I would like to give access to external users outside of those two domains.  However, our management does not want to establish trusts between domains.  What would be the best practice to accomplish this?  Additionally, will MOSS 2010 or Forefront resolve these issues?

Granting external non-domain users SharePoint 2007 access?

Hello all,

As you can well surmise, I've installed SharePoint 2007 on a server and require assistance. We have two sites. The primary site is for internal use only and the other site, a sub-site, is for communications and collaboration with select colleague organizations who are not members of our domain. How can I add these users to allow them access to this sub-site without giving them user accounts in our domain?

What I have done so far is enable SSO and add our users to have rights on the root site. That all works. I then created the sub-site. As a test from a thread I found, I added my GMail account username as a local user account on the SharePoint server. This did, indeed, allow me to add that user and give him rights to login, but I discovered that there is no way to modify the user's profile and, thusly, cannot specify an email address. What good is SharePoint is you can't get email notifications from it?

It then occured to me to create a new user group in the DC and create accounts for them there while at the same time limiting their access to only the SharePoint server and not have any local or remote login rights. Interestingly, the accounts will login after three tries, and then shows blank pages.

Anyway, what I need is to get these users in, have enough profile information that they can receive email from the server as neede

Allowing external access to a MOSS 2007 site?

I know this has been asked a million times but...Allowing external access to a MOSS 2007 site

I just can't figure it out, here is what I have done so far;

  •  Extended the web application the I want to access externally on port 39397
  •  NTLM Authentication
  • Allow Anon = No
  • Use SSL = No (Ideally I will want to use SSL but just trying to get it to work first)
  • URL = http://<servername>:39397
  • Zone = Internet (I really do not understand what these zones do, I have tried extranet and Internet)

Then I have gone to Alternate Access mappings and;

  • set the Public URL for the Internet zone to be http://<FQDN>:39397
  • created DNS record internally for <FQDN> to point to <server> for testing purposes

So internally this works and I can navigate the site but on my firewall I have set up NAT for port 39397 to point to <server> but the page never loads...What am I missing?

Full Control users only able to edit Shared Version of page in MOSS 2007

Hi, In MOSS 2007 we have a site collection that does not allow the owners to edit pages. There is no broken inheritance in the permissions, and when a user clicks "Site Actions" and then "Edit" they get a toolbar saying they are only editing the Shared Version of the page. No pages are checked out to any other users either and the users attempting this (including the Farm account) are not able to edit these pages. What would be the next steps to debugging this problem as it is not one I have encountered previously?

All users have "Limited access" to MOSS Site even Site Admins

hi All.

We are running MOSS 2007 Stand-alone server on server 2003 SP2.

We had perfectly running MOSS site with Document Libraries and Custom Lists with almost 10 subsites.

Suddenly today no one can edit or upload any new items or documents.

Under "Site Permissions", all the users have "Limited Access" permission level including Site Admins as well.

I have logged in as Site Admin and "Edit user Permission" under "Site Permissions" is not available anymore.

I know its a security issue but is there any way I can reset the security settings on Parenet Site.

(All the the subsites inherit security from the parent site)

MOSS 2007 can only grant permissions to users in the local domain...

Greetings all,

Where ever I go and attempt to add a user to a group or to grant permissions to a user I am never able to select users from other domains.  The only users I can select are users in the domain where MOSS 2007 was installed.  Is there a setting in MOSS that I need to change to be able to add users from other domains to groups in SharePoint?

Thanks for any and all insights.

How to integrate windows authentication with FBA in MOSS 2007

I have a scenario in wchich my domain users are login in moss sites through windows authentication in intranet zone. They want to use the site through internet also through FBA. Only thing is that they want to use the sane user Id and password(windows authentication ID) through FBA also. So how to store windows authentication information in FBA database. Also i dont need to give the accesss separately. The access should automatically get captured as provided in intranet zone.

Some users are unable to access my intranet site with windows authentication

Hi All

I have an intranet site that i set up to windows authentication. It works fine most of the time but some departments wont be able to access the site and will be asked to enter user name and password.
I checked their Active Directory account and the only difference i could see was that the  organizational unit parameter was different than the rest of the users. But im puzzled on what i can do to fix it and have them accessing the application.

Any ideas?

How does cross domain users (in the same forest) get authenticated/ authorized in MOSS 2007 ?

Configuring SharePoint 2010 to allow access for external users

I have just installed SharePoint 2010 on a Windows 2008 R2 server.  It works fine from the LAN but I cannot access it from the Web.  I have my router configured to forward all port 80 traffic to the virtual server so the problem is not there.  When I try to connect via the IP address or FQN that points to the same IP, I get a "Cannot Display the Page" error.

I have done this before and it worked fine but I'm missing something in the setup with Windows 2008 to allow external access.

Appreciate any help.

Thanks, Ken

MOSS 2007 - Only site Collection Administrators can access Default.aspx

I have MOSS 2007, and there is a strange problem: on Default.aspx page can access only site Collection Administrators. Other users take this access denied message:

Error: Access Denied

Current User

You are currently signed in as: domain**\user**

Sign in as a different user

Request access

On other pages they can access, by example on http://portal/_layouts/settings.aspx other users can access(if they have these rights).

Other users are members of Owners Group(Root site > People and Groups > Home Owners(in "Group Settings" there is Full Control checkbox).
They are also added to Site Settings > Permissions directly with Full Control. no effect.

I think it is very strange, it looks like some permissions for root page are broken..

MOSS 2007 - Access is denied. Check that the Default Content Access Account has access to this cont

Greetings folks,

I have MOSS 2007 running on Windows 2008 server.  I'm getting the following error when trying to crawl content.  "Access is denied. Check that the Default Content Access Account has access to this content, or add a crawl rule to crawl this content."  I have tried everything to correct this, and i'm about ready to pull my hair out.

Users having problems logging in. Using MOSS 2007

There seems to be problem for people logging on to our sharepoint site, they are asked for their password over and over again until IE gives them error OR they can login, but every single operation performed on the site asks them for their password.

-I have made the users add the url to trusted sites in IE->Internet options

-I have made them mark 'Automatically login with same user & pass'  under User authentication in IE-> Internet options

How do I fix this. Has this something to do with firewalls on the server or is this a browser problem?

sharepoint 2007 site external access

I am working on some code that I am writing on my dev site.  When you click a button, you are sent to a third party site, when you are done filling out a form, it kicks you back to my page.  This is done my referer.

On my test site, I created a site called test so if I go to http://test, my site comes up.  This won't work for my code development because the third party site must kick back to my site.  Since http://test isn't on the web, it won't work.

I set up a dyndns account so if you go to http://myhost.dyndns.org, the router points you to my vm.  If I go http://myhost.dyndns.org:5555, it goes to my central admin site.  If I go to http://myhost.dyndns.org, I get a random iis page, but not my sp site.

How do I change my sp2007 site, so I can access it from that other url?

MOSS 2007 RMS access Error

Users who do not have permissions to access InfoPath 2007 web based form can view the form if someon

I have a SharePoint Form Library with an InfoPath form published to the form as the default template. The form library has several forms in it that have line item permissions. This is supposed to restrict who can view the form. If the user who has had their permissions removed navigates to the form through SharePoint the form does not display (this is expected behavior). However if the user is provided a link to the URL for the form then the can view the InfoPath form.

Here is an example of the link: http://moss.companyname.com/test/_layouts/FormServer.aspx?XmlLocation=/test/InfoPath%20Test/system2009-10-23T12_23_13.xml&Source=http%3A%2F%2Fmoss%2Ecompanyname%2Ecom%2Ftest%2FInfoPath%2520Test%2FForms%2FAllItems%2Easpx&DefaultItemOpen=1

In addition I tried to put the forms into a folder and restirct the permissions on the folder, but the restricted users can still view the form.

When I removed the users permission to the form library then they got an error message.

I also tested this with a SharePoint list item and restricted permissions and this did not allow the user to view the item.
