SQL Server Unicode Characters in a column

Posted By:      Posted Date: August 31, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server
I have an ETL and it fails because of some Unicode Characters. The unicode characters are getting inserted from somewhere in the application and we are still trying to ascertain the source of the same.But till then I need to run a T-SQL Query and find out the rows( I know the column name ) that are causing this problem, modify the data to the correct format and then run the ETL. Would i need to use a cursor? can anyone please advise? It was a bit urgent thus any help would be great! Thanks Nimish

MySqlDataReader - Reading special column characters

I have a MySQL database, which contains columns with danish characters like ø æ and å.

When the MySqlDataReader tries to read this column name:

for (int i = 0; i < MysqlReader.FieldCount; i++)
       string Key = MysqlReader.GetName(i);

The result is not the expected character, but some kind of ASCII value of it. For an example, 'å' gets interpreted as 'Ã¥'.

What to do?

Thanks alot for your help :)

Lookup column output includes strange characters.

Hi all, I have a lookup column ("Priority"), that returns a number, which it looks-up from a different list (obviously). I have a workflow that emails the user when the list item is created, and in that email I have included the Priority field. However, the email is showing the contents of the Priority field along wth other characters - an example is: The column in the list says 3 The column in the email says 3;#3 What's going on? Why is it adding the additional characters to it? I'm not sure where it's coming from? This only seems to happen where a lookup column contains a number. Thanks in advance. Duncan

what is stored the guidlocal column in MSmerge_genhistory table (MS SQL Server 2000)?

In MSmerge_genhistory table there is a column called guidlocal. I noticed that for a large subset of the records on both the publisher and the subscriber, the value in this column is '00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000'. What does it mean? BOL says that guidlocal is: "Local identifier of the changes identified by generation at the Subscriber." but I still can't make it out what does '00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000' mean?

SQL server 2005 +asp.net 4.0 +html special characters problems saving special characters

Could I please ask - how do I go about inserting into a database special characters such as the uppercase O, umlaut

Please understand that I have been able to insert the special character from inside MMS by putting an N in front of the value

but when I run the  SQL file from inside an ASP.net 4.0 page it comes up as a diamond with a question mark in it

Does anyone have any idea how I would be able to acheive this?

SQL Server 2008 multiple lines in a varchar(MAX) column?

I'm using varchar(Max) to store a text file content. It's not taking the newline character. I tried \n and char(13) etc.. whatever solution posted in the net.

ex : update test set f='This is line 1.' + CHAR(13) + CHAR(10) + 'This is line 2.'

after updating it doesn't have any newline or linebreak. Can anyone help me in this how to have linebreaks in the varchar(max) field.

unable to unzip XML file with unicode characters in it's name.

Finally I did manage to build an application that supports unicode characters..

Now my application generates a zip file which contains an XML file. I want to unzip the zip file to view the contents of an XML file.

i am unable to unzip because the name of the zip file/as well as XMl file has Unicode characters(i.e. japanese Name) and it gives some error.

If i generate the XML file  with same contents but name of the files in English then i can view the contents of the XML file.

My query is i want to be able to unzip the XML file when the name of the file contains unicode characters in it.

as per my research up till now,  we either require a compatible winzip software or we have to create an utility for the same.

I need to know how to go about it. It's a little urgent as well.

Thnx in advance.

Column Name - cannot convert between unicode & nonunicode string data types

Im using the OLEDB Source to connect the source columns. But its throwing an error msg Column Name - cannot convert between unicode & nonunicode string data types. Could you please provide me the oracle code so that I can use with the select statement. For some of the schemas I have chaged the data types using the derived column before the OLEDB destination.

Actually, one of my team member suggested me to use the Oracle char(2) in the select statement. Can any one help me with the code so that I can use it for the rest of the columns.

Eg source(External Column) - CreatedBYID - DT_wstr(18)

Source - Output cloumn - CreatedById - DTStr(18)
