Changing default permissions for Owners group

Posted By:      Posted Date: August 31, 2010    Points: 0   Category :SharePoint
When a site is created within SharePoint (and permissions are not inherited from the parent), a default Owners, Members and Visitors group is created.  The default Owners group is assigned "Full Control".  I want this to default to a custom permission level that I have created called "Full Control - Limited".  What changes do I need to make to ensure that all new Owner groups are automatically assigned this custom permission level and NOT "Full Control"? EDIT - I have a console application which sweeps through all of the sites and changes all "Full Control" to "Full Control - Limited" but I really don't want to set a Scheduled Task each night to fix the new groups.

How to check effective permissions for a user or group for a SQL server object or whole server?

Guys, How do I see effective permissions for a user or group for a SQL server object or whole server? For example, a user is not listed in security/logins, but he is a member of few groups and some of them have assigned permissions on SQL server (again either directly or through membership in other groups) Even when I select an object (a table), check properties/permission – it doesn’t let me select any principal, except those listed on security/logins… Anyway, what is the right way to see effective permissions for a user or group? Sorry for asking such a simple question, I’ve searched but found nothing relevant.

Customized list views and permissions to specific group users

Hi, I have created a custom list with 20 field/columns in wss3.0. I had four user groups(group1, group2,....3.....4) in my site collection with various levels of permissions. I have created four custom views (Group 1 view, Group2 view,...etc)in my list. Each view contains only certain fields out of 20. For example group 1 view contains field 1, 5, 7,10 and 13 of every item in my list.  My requirement is that when a user login, who is a member of group1. he should be able to view only Group1 view fields. He should not able to view other field/columns. I tried creating another field/column called as restricted users and wrote group names in that. In the View edit page I selected " show item when the column 'restricted users' is equl to [Me]. But I did not get it. Kindly help it out any one either programmatically or UI based. Thanks

Sharepoint group permissions priority

Here I have a small doubt. Hopefully I am not asking stupid question. I have two sharepoint groups say A and B. A has read only permissions and B has full control permissions. one user is in both the groups. If the document library have permissions to both the groups, which permisssions the user will get. Read only or full control? ThanksBest

Changing File Permissions of Disconnected MDF/LDF Files

I am a university professor and have over a hundred student project databases using the developer edition of SQL 2005 and 2008 on a portable hard drive.  All are disconnected from any server.  I need to move these to a new hard drive but no file system tool I can find will let me copy the .mdf or .ldf files.  Each of these files has a single user with permissions and the user is a long alpha/numeric string that seems to have been generated by SQL.  I can copy these files if I select each file individually and give full control permissions to my current login.  On some files I need to first take ownership.  I just don't want to have to go in and do this manually for 200+ files scattered all over the drive. I really need some sort of batch approach (including something that can be launched from within VB which I can use to navigate my drive's folder structure looking for .mdf/.ldf files) to let me change the permissions on these files.  As I said, I have a LOT of them and they are scattered around a deep folder structure organized by semester, course, project team, and sometimes project version.  Further, the files accompany other files such as VB projects, report projects, SSIS projects, etc.  I have access to Windows Vista and Windows 7 for doing this.

In a group calendar, can items be made visiable to all users by default without adding them as atten

Well the title says it all really. We have a functioning sp 2010 site, setup this weekend, that's working great so far.  Primarily its being used for the company manual and procedures (a wiki site).  Search is working well and so on. I added a calendar with the intention of showing key company activities, plus holiday information and who's out at meetings.  We're a small company and this is unlikely to get ridiculously except on exceptional days. As it stands, when i create an item (for example someone out for a weeks holiday) unless another user adds one of the 'attendees' of the holiday event to the calendar it doesn't show up.  If I add all users as attendees then they can all see it by default. However, if I show that our chairman is attending a meeting at a client, then I can't explicitly say that the chairman is an attendee because for everyone to see it, they have to be attendees as well. I nsoed around a little and thought target audiences might be the way to go.  I configured all users and manager relationships, compiled the audience (it shows the right number of users).  However, if I setup a meeting with the chairman as an attendee, and the whole company audience as the target audience, then people still can't see it. Back to square one. So, is there an actual answer to this?  A different type of calendar, a query that

Adding a group while inheriting permissions

Hi all, I was wondering if its possible to create a group that only exists within a subsite, while still inheriting permissions, For example, I have a subsite named Child that currently inherits permissions from its parent site Parent.  Is it possible to create an Owners group only within Child that allows people to make changes exclusively to Child while at the same time continuing to inherit permissions from Parent? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

Changing Clustered SQL Server 2005 Default Server Collation

We are attempting to change the default collation of an SQL Server 2005 Clustered environment. We have created an "unattended install" script to perform this, and have modified it several times as errors have arisen repeatedly. The last time, however, we used the following script:

We are running this script from the primary (Active) node of the cluster. We did notice that the bootstrap logs created from this final execution did include logs from both nodes. When I look in the Summary.txt file, it tells me that Setup succeeded with the installation. After the script executed, we rolled the cluster from primary to secondary, and rebooted the primary node. We then rolled the cluster back to the primary, and rebooted the secondary node. Once that was complete, we cycled the SQL Server service from the SQL Configuration Manager. After all those steps, we opened SSMS client to look at the properties of master, and the collation was still CI_AI.

We are losing valuable time in

ASPNetSQLProvider - Changing it from the default to a custom SQL Database

I am new to ASP.NET and need some help.

What I am trying to do is to create a login for a new site that I am developing, and I need the users etc to be contained within the SQLEXPRESS database that I am using.

Can someone please help me to work out how to point the default ASPNETSQLProvider to my SQL database and not the default APP_Data one?

I am using Visual Studio 2008 and SQLExpress 2005.

Many thanks,

Reporting Services Forms Authentication and group permissions

Hello all,

I have spent some time getting Forms Authentication working with 2008 (R2) I have one final problem left that is causing intense frustration...

The working bits:

a) Built and tested the required extension - thanks to a combination of old Microsoft example supplemented by the one from chapter 19 of Teo Lachev's book, supplemented by Brian Lawson's book.

b) used existing user/group structures in the db to implement role level permissions

c) Can now grant rights to usernames and the usernames validated against our db, they can log in fine and run reports.

d) Nice customised login screens that login across the application and Reporting Services with a single login - which was the primary aim after all!

e) can grant rights to folders at group level and granting/revoking those rights adds or removes the folders in ReportManager - all looking wonderful

The last hurdle:

If I grant permissions to a specific username (we use email address as the username) then that user can log in to ReportManager fine and see what they should see, so it seems like the bulk of the authentication and authorisation extension logic is OK.

If I grant the exact same permission to a role, and make a login a member of that role (removing the specific username permission) then they

How to get the permissions of a user or group that has "Limited Access" to a site

For a user or group that has "Limited Access" to a site, I'd like to be able to find all of the libraries, documents, etc that that user or group has been given permissions to.  I believe that I could accomplish this by iterating over all of the lists of the site, and then over all of the list items of each list, and checking if, for that list or list item, inheritance is broken and that user or group has been granted access.  However, I am hoping there is a cleaner, quicker alternative in which I don't have to iterate over all of the site content.

If that's not possible, I may be able to accomplish mostly what I need if I could find all of the site content which has unique permissions (and then simply iterate over that content to see if the user or group has been given permissions).

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

"Person or Group" Field Default Value

I have a "Person or Group" column being used to indicate an Assigned To value for our application. I would like the value of that column to default to the current user's name - in other words, the person submitting the new list item will be the assignee by default (and has the option to change it).

I tried doing this through SharePoint Designer by placing [Me] in some value attributes, but it's not working.

Is there some way to accomplish this?

cannot see Give Group Permissions to this site

I often need to create sharepoint groups in MOSS 2007. I go to the site, site settings-people and group, and in the new menu- click new group, then in next page, sometime at the bottom of the page the last item:

Give Group Permission to this Site

But sometimes, I cannot see that, the last one is

Membership Requests

Why is that?

I do need it shows the give group permission to this site, so that I can assign rights to group.

Unable to set Default Schema for a group

We're using Windows Authentication with our SQL Server.  We've added a domain group to the SQL Server groups and would like to give it a default schema.  The properties window is the same for users and groups but the default schema field is enable only for user entities.  We cannot add a default schema to a group.
Is this by design,  a bug or a problem with our SQL Server installation?

Updated on 2005/08/29

My first try was done at through Database\Security\Users.  I tried going through Server\Security\Logins and I got this error message
Alter failed for User 'Domain\Group'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.SMO)
Additional Information:
--> An exception occured while executing a Transact-Sql statement or batch.

--> The DEFAULT_SCHEMA clause cannot be used with a Windows group or
with principals mapped to certificates or asymmetric keys.

Why can we not set a Default Schema to a Windows group?  This would be

Changing Default Language for British Date Format

After reading several topics about Datetime formats from US-English to British, I got more confused.  I have successfully changed Default Language on my local machine's SQL Server Express using this:

EXEC sp_configure 'default language', '23'

But I can't change it on a Server side.  It prompts me to run 'RECONFIGURE' again and when I do I am getting this error:

"Address Windowing Extensions (AWE) is not supported in this edition of SQL Server."

Changing permissions on a named pipe.

Hi all,

I am trying to interface a Web Service Client with a Server program where
communication is achieved via Named Pipes.  My difficulty is that the
Web Service runs under the "NETWORK SERVICE" system account and the Server
runs under another local account with administrator privilege.  I am trying
to introduce code in the server that grants write access to the pipe to the
"NETWORK SERVICE" account.  I assumed that the following would work:

PipeSecurity pipesec = pipeServer.GetAccessControl();

Unfortunately in this sequence, the call to SetAccessControl produces the
an exception (see below).  I have verified that the routines GetAccessControl
and SetAccessControl can successfully be called in sequence, but, of course,
this is of little utility without the intervening AddAccessRule.

Here is a listing of the sample program.

Changing default 7 day calendar view to 5 days (mon-fri)

We are currently using a 'list' calendar on month view for holidays.

The calendar is currently showing monday to sunday. We work a 5 day week so saturday/sunday are irrelevant. Is it possible to change this view so that it only displays mon to fri??

View all resources on a SharePoint group calendar by default.

I have set up a group calendar in SharePoint and added 10 items to the associated Resources list.  By default resource bookings will not appear on the group calendar unless you manually select the resources through the interface.  I would like the calendar's default view to display all bookings (or all available resources) by default.  Anyone have recommendations on the best way to do this?
