Problem connecting to SQL Server 2008 R2 Express from Access 2007

I have a problem with SQL Server 2008 R2 Express with MS Access 2007. I am running Windows 7 with 8 gigs memory. I installed SQL Server 2008 R2 Express. Do I now need to install SP1 because I am running with Windows 7? I can open SQL Server using the Management Screen but I cannot connect to MS Access 2007 using SQL Server Express as the database. When trying to connect to SQL Server from Access 2007, I keep getting the message that SQL Server 2005 cannot be found. It will not allow me to sign onto sql server 2008 stating that it cannot be found. Do I have to now run the SQL Server 2008 R2 Express SP1? Is there an upgrade to MS Access 2007 which will allow me to use SQL Server 2008 R2 Express?

Excel 2007 Pivot table OLAP- SSAS 2008 Error

Hi, I do have a strange issue with Excel 2007 pivot table report; the data source is SSAS 2008 cube. When refresh the excel 2007 report data using the 'Refresh All' or 'Refresh' button available under the Data menu, the below error is thrown. "The expression contains a function that cannot operate on a set with more than 4,294,967,296 tuples." After some analysis, the report works well on the below workaround, 1. Remove all the calculated measures from report (3 measures in this scenario) 2. Remove one row label (dimension attribute) from report But the measures, attributes are valid one from cube and it is required fields in the report. So, understand that removing few items is not at all a solution. The below workaround also works. 1. Check the 'Defer Layout Update' option from the Pivot Table Field List window. 2. Click on the Update button After that Unchecked the 'Defer Layout Update' option and apply the filter, etc in the report. The report works very well. But every time, we need to use the above work around after open the excel report. I have NO clue on this issue. Please help to resolve this issue. Thanks, Jey

Import Excel data into SQL Server express 2008

I have recently installed SQL express 08 and created a table to import excel data into.  Im running on a windows 7 64 bit OS i5 processor.  I've disabled the firewall (temporarily) and will set the necessary ports once this is working. I run the following query:  (which i found from multiple sources on the net) Select   * From OPENROWSET ( 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0', 'Excel 8.0;Database=C:\Users\Public\lenovoBkup\contacts\outlookFiles\noib2a.xls', 'Select * From [sheet1$]' )  and receive the following message: Msg 7308, Level 16, State 1, Line 1                                                                                  OLE DB provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' cannot be used for distributed queries because the provider is configured to run in single-threaded apartment mode.  (how did they know i was single and living in an apartment? lol) so after research of the following message i restarted the system and relaunched man

MOSS 2007 Standard installation with SQL Server 2008 EXPRESS Edition server

Hello I have installed MOSS 2007 with SQL Server 2008 Express edition. Can anyone tell me what all features will be missing when compared this setup to MOSS 2007 Stanadard with SQL server 2008 lisenced editon? Specifically will I not be getting forms services with "MOSS 2007 with SQL Server 2008 EXPRESS edition"? Thanks in advance.

Upsizing Database from Access 2007 to SQL Server Express 2008

I have recently downloaded and installed SQL Server Express 2008 on to my Windows XP SP3 machine, I have a large MS Access 2007 database (.accdb) I wish to export out to SQL Server. I am using the 'upsizing wizard' that is found on the 'Database Tools' tab of Access 2007. Clicking on the 'Database Tools' tab and then on the 'SQL Server' button starts the Upsizing wizard. On the first page of which I select the 'Create new database' option, the next page asks 'What SQL Server would you like to use for this database?' it already has '(local)' entered into the text box, so I leave that unchanged, I tick the trusted connection box and name the new SQL Server database and then click 'Next'. But I get the following error (it appears in a Windows information message box):

Title: Microsoft SQL Server Login
Message Text:
Connection failed:
SQLState: '01000'
SQL Server Error: 2
[Microsft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][Shared Memory]ConnectionOpen(Connect()).
Connection failed:
SQL State: '08001'
SQL Server Error: 17
[Microsft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][Shared Memory]SQL Server does not exist or access denied.

PS. I have successfully used the upsizing wizard to export the same Access database into SQL Server Express 2005 on another machine.

What am I doing wrong this time?

"PivotTable.DisplayEmptyRows = false " in Excel pulling from Analysis Server 2008, doesn't work.

We display financial information, using Excel pulling from Analysis Server 2008.

In vba,  "ptTemp.DisplayEmptyRow = false" works fine for hiding empty rows of data on most pivot tables, but if the "account numbers" parent/child dimension is in the row fields, it doesn't.

The row Dimension look like this:

Balance Sheet

Current Assets

Total Balance Sheet

Income Statement

Gross Profit

Item A

Total Income Statement

SQL Server 2008 Express - No Solution Explorer

I installed Sql Server 2008 Express and there is not a Solution Explorer. I go to Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio -> FIle -> New and my only options are (1) Query with Current Connection (2) Database Engine Query (3) SQL Server Compact Query (4) Policy. I have tried CTL-ALT-L. VIEW does not have a Solution Explorer. And when I got to TOOLS -> Customize, there is no Solution Explorer.

What do I have to install to get Solution Explorer? Would I have to uninstall my current SQL Server or will it just overlay or co-exist?

Excel 2007/2010 - SSAS 2008 R2 Offline cubes

Hi all. I have a question regarding offline cubes (offline data files) in Excel 2007/2010 connecting to SSAS 2008 R2. When I try to make an offline data file in Excel I get a OLE DB error. The server I am trying to connect to is at a hosting partner on a different (but trusted) domain but I have admin rights on it. I then took a copy of the SSAS database and moved it to my own pc and could then create offline data file. I thought it might be a firewall issue on the server and tried turning it off, but the OLE DB error came again. I therefore think that there is something that happens over the network and is blocked by the hosting partner. I probably should tell that I am also SSAS admin, so it is not because of lack of rights on the SSAS that I get the error.

What I like to know if there is anyone who knows this problem or knows what happens when you try to create offline data file against SSAS in Excel? Specifically what is transferred between the client and the server, what ports and are there any programs run or code executed to create the offline cube on the client that might be blocked by typical network/domain settings/rules?

SQL 2008 SP1 - Log shipping solution with Logshipping monitor on SQL Server Express Edition SP1 (bad

Hello All !

I'm installing a log shipping solution with SQL Server 2008 Standard SP1 (on x64 US). I use a monitor logshipping with SQL Server Express Edition x64 SP1 US. When I try to connect it, I have this message when i tried to use w.x.y.z\SQLEXPRESS  as a monitor server:

'w.x.y.z\SQLEXPRESS' is not a valid monitor server instance.  A monitor server instance must be SQL Server Standard Edition, SQL Server Workgroup Edition, or SQL Server Enterprise Edition.'

In SQL 2005, it is possible to do that with SQL Express. And with 2008 R2, is it possible too or it is the same problem ?

Thanks for advance for your ideas / help - Regards - Have a nice day ! RHUM2

SSAS 2008 data refresh problem in Excel 2007

My problem sounds like that:

I have some cube created with SSAS 2008 and I'm using Excel 2007 as browser to view cube data.

I made pivot table with nessesary data, everything works fine till I save excel file and sent it to my client.

When client uses some filter, some row measures disapear. Dimension data are shown, measures are blank cells, but calculations from those measures is filled.

e.g. I see difference of sales between years in percent, but I can't see measures, which were used to count that difference, because in excel I see blank cells.

Any ideas?

SharePoint Solution Generator 2008 - does it only work on local WSS instance?

I am using the version of Solution Generator installed with VSeWSS 1.2. I have VSTS2008 and WSS3 installed on a Win2k3 box, which we use for development. The solution generator works perfectly on the local instance of WSS, but if I try and make a solution a any sites hosted on a remote box, I get the 'No SharePoint site exists at the specified location' error message. Does the solution generator only work on local sites?

The account I am using is a domain admin and a farm / site collection administrator and SQL sysadmin on both boxes hosting SharePoint. I'm trying to generate solutions from a live site to put into source control. I don't really want to install visual studio on the live server as I am only intending to use it there for this one-time generation job.

64 bit Windows 7 + Excel 2010 beta + SQL Server 2008 Enterprise SP1 = My DM Add-in does not work

I'm running W7 + Excel 2010 beta + SQL Server 2008 Enterprise on a full 64-bit PC.  My SQL Server 2008 DM Add-in installs properly (throws no errors), but neither the Data Mining nor Table Analyzer tabs show up on the Excel ribbon & are not available in the Add-in dialog box.  I also have all of the above on a 32-bit laptop, and both DM tabs ARE available on the Excel ribbon and seem to function properly.

As a test I uninstalled the add-in from both machines and reinstalled.  The issue was the same; the add-in shows up on Excel running in the 32-bit environment but not on the 64-bit environment.

Question:  Is this problem due to the 64-bit environment, or could it be something else?

Cannot update Excel 2007 spreadsheet as linked server within SQL 2005 or SQL 2008 via ADO

I am having difficulty updating an Excel worksheet via the ACE.OLEDB.12.0

I have a worksheet defined as a linked server in SQL Server via this
provider, and all attempts to update the lone worksheet in this file as a
linked server results in the following:

OLE DB provider "Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0" for linked server "linked_excel"
returned message "Bookmark is invalid.".
Msg 7346, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Cannot get the data of the row from the OLE DB provider
"Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0" for linked server "linked_excel".

The query:
update linked_excel...sheet1$ set error_col='hithere' where

However, when I try to perform precisely the same update against the same
source via openrowset, it works, to-wit:

update openrowset('Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0','Excel
12.0;HDR=yes;Database=f:\path_to_file\filename.xlsx','select * from
set error_col='hithere'

SELECT's performed against either version work properly.

The linked server behavior is consistent across SQL 2005 and 2008

I am concerned that this problem is an artifact of an OLEDB provider update that purposely disabled update b
