Hi I am testing the startup of a SQL 2008 R2 clustered instance (Windows 2008 R2) using single user mode but it fails with : Error: 17058, Severity: 16, State: 1. initerrlog: Could not open error log file '. Operating system error = 3(The system cannot find the path specified.) - I am running the following command from the default sql installation : C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.SQL01\MSSQL\Binn>sqlservr.exe -c -m -s SQL01 - The cluster service on the passive node has been shutdown. - The SQL Server and SQL Agent services have been set to offline in Failover Cluster Manager. Can not connect to user instance of SQL Server 2008 Express with Advance Services in Visual Studio 2

I used SQL Server 2008 Express with Advanced Services (not SQL Server 2008 Express) in Visual Studio 2010 because it is the fast and easy way to developed and managed data-driven applications with powerful built-in reporting and full-text search functionality. I received Sql Server 2008 Service Pack 1 with Windows Update. It's ok if I connect to instance of SQL Server 2008 Express with Advance Services (with SP1) through SQL Server Management, but if I try to attach a database in Server Explorer (Visual Studio 2010), I get the following error: "Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed." I'm stuck at this point. Is there a fix or a workaround? I've already tried deleting the 'C:\Users\Administrtor\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server Data\SQLEXPRESS' directory as mentioned in other posts, with no luck. SQL Server Express 2008 instance fails to start

I've installed SQL Server Express with a named instance 'SQLSERVER2'. I was able to connect to it and reference it in the management studio. There was a problem though with Visual Studio 9 when running an ASP.NET web application that required connecting to the same instance. So, I went into the configuration manager to change the security level of the instance from network to local service. The change went through but could not restart the instance. That is what has created my next round of problems. I can't go in and change it back to network because the instance is permanently stopped. I cannot start it with the services manager. How can I fix this?

Here is the connection log:

SQL 2008 SP2 succefull but instance start fails - Script level upgrade for database 'master' faile

after installing SP2 instance starts and stops with error:

Script level upgrade for database 'master' failed because upgrade step 'sqlagent100_msdb_upgrade.sql' encountered error 5831, state 1, severity 16. This is a serious error condition which might interfere with regular operation and the database will be taken offline. If the error happened during upgrade of the 'master' database, it will prevent the entire SQL Server instance from starting. Examine the previous errorlog entries for errors, take the appropriate corrective actions and re-start the database so that the script upgrade steps run to completion.

Already tried without success:
- enabled SA account (was disabled) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/960781/en-us
- uninstalled SP2 -> other error, but same problems with running the script

Database Corrupted - Can't get db in single user mode

I have two SQL 2008 R2 databases running on a 64-bit development Machine :

IMS
MyDatabase

I have created Synonyms in MyDatabase (Table1, Table2, Table3) for three tables in the IMS database.

I am experiencing very poor performance using these Synonyms from my application so I am trying to troubleshoot the problem.

I tried to run "DBCC CHECKDB (IMS,  REPAIR_ALLOW_DATA_LOSS)" by performing the following steps
  1. Used Services to stop the processes (Instance, Agent, Browser, Integration Services 10.0, VSS Writer)
  2. Ran cmd.exe "As Administrator"
  3. cd C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.SQLEXPRESS\MSSQL\Binn
  4. ran sqlservr.exe -m -s SQLEXPRESS (output says it started in single user mode)

Next,

  1. Ran cmd.exe "As Administrator"
  2. cd C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Binn
  3. ran sqlcmd.exe -S D

SQL Server 2000 Database in "single user mode"

Hi all,

I've an old production database server with SQL Server 2000 SP4, that runs from 6 years. Now sometimes I find that the production database goes in "single user mode". Why? My error logs don't help me.

Is realtime SQL Server Replicated database usable realtime (not offline / single user mode)

Is SQL Server replicated (destination) database replicated by SQL Server Replication fully usable? Meaning it's not just for Disaster Recovery but is fully usable from various say BI / Reporting purposes.

In the essence it is exactly same as other replication engines and the destination database is very much usable and not just offline / single user mode.

Thanks

SMO Database in Single User mode issues

I am trying to use the SMO library and setting the single user mode. Here is a simple example illustrating my issue.

The below code will fail the first time. Saying "Invalid object name TestTable". Eventhough that table does exist and so does the DB. However, if you run it again (now the DB is already in single user mode) everything works fine. Also, if you remove the code that alters the db user mode everything works fine. I am assuming the problem must exist with the single user mode and utilizing the correct db connection. I have tried flipping the AutoDisconnectMode and NonPooledConnection but that hasn't help. Any help would be appreciated.

Sample code

SqlConnectionStringBuilder sb = new SqlConnectionStringBuilder();

sb.Password = "P@ssword!";

sb.UserID = "testuser";

sb.DataSource = @".\mssql2008";

sb.InitialCatalog = "TestDB";

ServerConnection serverConn = new ServerConnection();

//serverConn.AutoDisconnectMode = AutoDisconnectMode.NoAutoDisconnect;

//serverConn.NonPooled

"Object reference not set to an instance of an object" when 1 single user tries to check out a file

We are running WSS 3.0 SP2.  We have 1 single user that started having the following occur:  When he goes into a document library in which he has contribute permissions, selects a file, picks Check Out and Edit, he is getting a pop-up stating 'Object reference not set to an instance of an object".  When he clicks on the OK button he gets another message stating that it may be a permission issue or the file may be locked for editing by another user.

I have confirmed that nobody else has the file checked out for editing.  Other users (including myself) can open the exact same files, check them out and edit them, then check them back in.

I have searched the web for this error and have not found anything useful to tell me what to try on his machine.  I’m thinking it is a local PC issue since he is the only one experiencing the issue plus I have had him log into our Citrix client and he can successfully check out and edit files there.  He has done a reboot of his machine but this did not res

No ASPNET User in Windows Server 2008?

I have been looking everywhere online regarding this, but have not found a clear answer.

I have an ASP.Net app running on Windows Server 2008, it's basically a reporting app using Crystal Reports. I have encountered a roadblock in regards to rendering some pages. When I run the app in Visual Studio(on the same 2008 machine) everything works perfectly. Yet when I publish it and run it live the reports will not display correctly, I get a message saying Failed to render page.

I looked this error up in the Crystal Reports website and the fixes they have there refer to giving the windows "aspnet" user full access rights to certain folders on the machine. I would be happy to do this, however there is no aspnet user in Windows Server 2008.

I installed the server and set its role to be Web Server. I also checked all the options regarding ASP.Net and IIS 6 compatibility. Yet there is no ASPNET username anywhere.

Did I set the server up wrong? or do I have to do something within ASP.Net to  create this user and then give it rights?

Error "user does not have permission to perform this operation" with User Instance = True.

I setup SQL Server 2005 / SQL Express. All works fine in SQL Server 2005.

I am connecting to a SQL Database from VS 2005,  Tools/Connect to Database. I set the Data Source to "Microsoft SQL Server Database File (SqlClient)" (meaning SQL Server Express) and User Instance = True, and Integrated Security = True.

The above is working successfully on all machines except my Laptop. On my Laptop, I am getting this error "user does not have permission to perform this operation". On my Laptop, if I change User Instance = False, it works fine. Also, If I connect to SQL Server 2005 it works fine only if User Instance = False.

I tried all kind of security changes, nothing worked. For example, I setup Everyone as Full Control for the Folder and the MDF File of SQL Server. I gave my user ID as sysadmin role in SQL Server Express. Also, I enabled creating User Instance form SQL Server Express, Nothing is working.

Appreciate your help.

Tarek.

Need help with setting up SQL Server 2008 for role/user management

I've posted my problem in a few other categories.  Sorry for that.  I didn't see the security category until now.

I'm trying to use ASP.NET's built-in role/user management for a couple ASP.NET MVC 2 sites.  I'm using the MVCMusicStore as my guide.  I click on the Configuration Tool as the tutorial suggests, which launches the site administration page.  Unfortunately when I click on the security tab, I get an error that it cannot connect to the data store.  Attempting to test the AspNetSqlProvider gives me a similar error.

I've run the aspnet_regsql program as the error message suggested, and I have a role/user management database ready to go on the server.  The proper tables are constructed, and all that.  The configuration tool still doesn't see the data store.

As a test, I ran the MVCMusicStore demo in the debugger.  Its role/user management functionality worked.  I was able to add myself as a customer, and add/remove items from my cart with no errors or exceptions.  However, when I attempted to access its security tab in the configuration tool, I received the same error as I get for my own project.  How is it possible that role/user management works, but the configuration tool cannot change its settings?

Any suggestions on how I can get the configuration t
