Can't save Maintenance Plans (10.50.1600 / 2008 R2 x64)

I run SQL Server 10.50.1600 / 2008 R2 x64 Enterprise. I am unable to create a maintenance plan via Management Studio. If I just try to create a new maintenance plan, then I get the following problem: "An OLE DB error 0x80004005 (Login timeout expired) occurred while enumerating packages. A SQL statement was issued and failed."

how can i export/import maintenance plans from 2005 to 2008?

I have this link http://sqlservernewbie.blogspot.com/2008/10/how-to-importexport-sql-server.html However, it is not the solution for me. When I expand SERVERNAME (Integration Services), all I can see it is Running packages and Stored packages, and I cannot expand any deeper. And the scripting way which described in the link above, seems is not finished. It just tells you about the select...JulieShop

SQL 2008 Maintenance plans missing Truncate transaction log checkbox

I am a noob SQL 2008 DBA and had a quick question on the maintenance plans. Under the database/tasks/backup function under options there is checkbox to truncate logs when they are being backed up. Yet when I create a transaction log backup job using the maintenance wizard the checkbox is missing for that option.  Why is that missing?

Thanks, Jules

Unable to install SQL Server 2008 Express R2 after installing .NET 4.0

Hi experts, I intend to redistribute SQL Server 2008 Express R2 in my installer. I've extracted the setup files from SQLEXPR32_x86.exe and pass in the appropriate command line parameters during the setup. Recently, I noticed if I applied the following Windows Update: .NET 4.0 Client Profile, I will hit into the following error when I installed SQL express. .NET Runtime 4.0 Error Reporting EventType clr20r3, P1 setup100.exe, P2 10.50.1600.1, P3 4bb67524, P4 mscorlib, P5, P6 4ba1da6f, P7 44f0, P8 32, P9 system.security.security, P10 NIL. .NET Runtime Application: setup100.exe Framework Version: v4.0.30319 Description: The process was terminated due to an unhandled exception. Exception Info: System.Security.SecurityException Stack: at Microsoft.SqlServer.Chainer.Setup.Setup.DebugBreak() at Microsoft.SqlServer.Chainer.Setup.Setup.Main() Running the setup.exe from a file server will give these errors but if I copied the entire setup files to a local folder and run setup.exe from there, it runs fine. May I know what am I missing? I definitely need to support to install SQL express running from a file server location. Thanks, MK

Cannot create maintenance plan in SQL 2008 SP1

I receive the following error trying to create a maintenance plan in SQL 2008 SP1 on a Windows 2008/R2 server: The action you attempted to perform on a remote instance of SQL Server has failed because the action requires a SQL Server component that is not installed on the remote computer. To proceed, install Microsoft SQL Server Management Tools on the remote computer, and then try again. The components that installed are Database Engine Services, Reporting Services, Client Tools Connectivity, Management Tools Basic/Complete, and SQL Client Connectivity SDK.  I have another independent SQL 2008 SP1 server running on the same platform with the same features installed and I have no problem creating maintenance plans there.  However, it does have IIS as it was upgraded from a SQL 2005 server which required IIS for reporting services while SQL 2008 does not. I'm familiar with http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqltools/thread/06c80a78-a877-4a48-a032-b0aef78a598c but that doesn't seem to apply as this was a new SQL 2008 installation on a freshly installed OS.  I've seen several other postings of this on the web but they all appear specific to SQL 2005. What else could be missing? Thanks.

A client has purchased a software package that runs on SQL 2008, They did the initial install but that is a they want to do on there end. They have sent us a list on maintenance jobs to be configured but are no help in getting them in place. I have very little SQL expereince so I am looking for direction. Here is a list of jobs they wanted setup. 1.       Check database integrity – set plan to fire off daily. 2.       Reorganize index – set weekly – except on the week that you Rebuild indexes.  Start index page size at 50%. 3.       Rebuild index – set monthly 4.       Update statistics – set weekly after reorganize indexes and rebuild indexes. 5.       Clean up history – set monthly 6.       Back Up Database (FULL) – set daily 7.       Maintenance Cleanup Task – this is to control the number of locally available backups.          Can anyone help me get these in place? Thanks in advanced for any help. I am doing manual backups only a this time.

SQL server 2008 - Unable to tune a query with DTA

We are on:Verison: SQL 2008 [10.0.2531] on windows server 2008. Both are enterprise editions. When I highlight the query and right-click, then select Analyze Query in Database Engine Tuning Advisor, then click "Start Analysis",  I get the following error in the "Message" column of "Progress" tab of DTA: Cannot initialize tuning. [.Net SqlClient Data Provider] If I click on this, it displays this message: "Cannot find either column 'msdb' or the user-defined function or aggregate 'msdb.dbo.fn_DTA_unquote_dbname', or the name is ambiguous. SQL 2008 SP1 - ALTER FAILED in Maintenance Plan

Hi, One of my SQL 2008 SP1 servers is experiencing periodic failures of a database maintenance plan that includes integrity checks.  Failed:(0) Alter failed for Server 'ssomsitrack1v'.  I've seen other postings from people who have had this issue with SQL 2005 and fixed it by either applying a service pack, enabling the "automatically set processor affinity mask" and/or I/O affinity mask settings, or by executing a sp_configure 'allow updates',0. This server already has both affinity mask checkboxes set, and allow updates is already set to 0.  The maintenance plan fails with this message about 1 in 4 times.  The server is on a VMWare VM w/2GB RAM and two vCPU's.  There's only one user database and it's tiny (~200MB). Any ideas?

Unable to set defaultmember via MDX in SSAS 2008 R2

Hi,   I've migrated my SSAS cube from 2005 to 2008 R2. in 2005 I could use the mdx (alter cube currentcube ...) to set the default member based on attribute property of another dimension. With 2208 R2 I'm unable to set the value. The mdx that I'm using in 2005 is as follows: alter cube currentcube update dimension [Time].[Time Hierarchy], default_member = tail(filter([Time].[Time Hierarchy].[Day of Month].members, [Time].[Day of Month].currentmember.membervalue  = CDbl([Cube Defaults].[Default Values].Properties( "Default Time Key" ))), 1)(0); This used to set the default member to whatever the Default Time Key attribute is set to. For ex. 01-Jan-2010 or 01-Jun-2010 etc.  This doesn't work in 2008 R2 anymore and the default member for the Time dimension is set to "All". Any ideas? Do I need to change something in the above script to get it working? All help would be very useful! - Sourabh

Unable to Backup Service Master Key on SQL 2008 Express

Hi I am attempting to do a backup of the Server Master Key but it fails. The error message I am receiving is as follows: Msg 15240, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Cannot write into file 'C:\Users\harvey norman\Documents\SQL Server Management Studio Express\SQLEXPR2008ADV_ServerMasterKey'. Verify that you have write permissions, that the file path is valid, and that the file does not already exist. The PC I am running SQL 2008 Express (64 bit) is running on Vista Ultimate (64-bit) SP2. The SQL I wrote is as follows: BACKUP SERVICE MASTER KEY TO FILE = 'C:\Users\harvey norman\Documents\SQL Server Management Studio Express\SQLEXPR2008ADV_ServerMasterKey' ENCRYPTION BY PASSWORD = '??' GO Note that the ?? represents the password but is not actually the password for obvious reasons. I am logged in to the PC as a user with Admin permissions.  I had a look at the destination folder, and it shows I have full control. So, I am mystified. If somebody could advise me I would really appreciate it. Many thanks in advance. Kind regards Ross Ross

Error with Maintenance Plans - SQL 2005

Hi everyone.I have a problem with SQL 2005 with Cluster.  There is no issues with installation process and the cluster works fine. Normally I install SQL and apply Service Pack. So I do this, installing Service Pack 3 in both nodes (two nodes)After this, I create some databaese and restore backup from other SQL 2005 Server and also I import the logins to access SQLBut when I try access Maintenance Palns appears the following messageFailed to retrieve data for this request (Microsoft.SqlServer.SmoEnum)Additional Information:    an exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo) Invalid column name 'from_msx'Invalid column name 'has_targets') Microsoft Sql Server, Error:207)What I do. Remove client components, Integration and Notification Services in both nodes, reinstall and apply Service Pack. Now I can create a new plan. but in the saving step appears the following messageSaving maitenance plan failed.Additional information:Failed to retrieve data for this request (Microsoft.SqlServer.SmoEnum)An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo) Invalid colum name 'ms_job_id' (Microsoft Sql Server, Error:207)I found some information in Internet, about a script that fixes this, but in Service Pack 2. I thinking in remove SQL , reinstall and test without SP. And

Exporting SQL Maintenance Plans

I have taken a look at the new maintenance plan designer and have come up with a maintenance plan I would like to be able to deploy on an enterprise level.  Anyone know of a way I can export the plan to another SQL 2005 server - without directly pulling from the msdb system tables?  I like the fact that you can script the output of most of the wizards, but the maintenance plan wizard does not appear to be one of them. Thanks,Matt

Unable to connect SQL Server 2008

Hi, I have recently installed a trial copy of SQL Server 2008 from MS web but I am not able to connect to the SQL Database Engine locally using Windows Authentication. Whenever, I tried I got the following error message: "A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 53)" Just to inform you, I have OS Win7.  And I want to establish local connections only on my laptop.

SSMS 2008 Activity Monitor Activity Monitor is unable to execute queries against server (SQL Server

I get the following error when running SQL Server SSMS 2008 (32-bit) on my (Windows 7 64-bit) workstation against our SQL Server 2005 (32-bit) development server running Windows Server 2003 (32-bit): TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio ------------------------------ The Activity Monitor is unable to execute queries against server <my server\instance name>. Activity Monitor for this instance will be placed into a paused state. Use the context menu in the overview pane to resume the Activity Monitor. ------------------------------ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Unable to find SQL Server process ID 2256 on server VTX-DEV-01 (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.ResourceMonitoring)   I can expand the panes and all display data except Overview and Data File I/O. This is true for all instances on that server. The SSMS 2005 Activity Monitor (also on my workstation) works fine when connected to that server. I checked for the registry setting to disable the performance counters on both my machine and the server, and it was not there. I started the Performance Counter DLL Host on my machine, but that made no difference. I can see all Processor counters on the server from my local Performance Monitor. I ran "lodctr /R" on both systems, but that didn't help. The only SQL counters I see on the server (from my workstation) are SQLServer:SSIS Pipeline and SQLServer:SSIS
