SQL Server VSS Writer "Status"

Posted By:      Posted Date: August 29, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

Hello, I have an HP Server running Win 2008 R2 Ent. X64 SP2 with Hyper-V and been having issues with Windows Server Backup. My original post can viewed here http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverhyperv/thread/6a20c2e9-499e-4ae3-9c21-f6a6971d9e5f/#676611f6-1d1f-4c1c-84f8-84f6bae9187b I have read a lot of forums and article and done windows update, but could not get the Windows Server Backup to work manually or on scheduled time. The above link shows the list of errors when the backup runs. When I opened the Service list I noticed that SQL Server VSS Writer had a status of "Starting" and startup type "Automatic". When I stopped the service I managed to get the backup to work manually and on it scheduled time. Should this service be stopped and set to automatic or should be started and automatic? Thanks..

Outgoing mail server in Not Configured status!

Hi all,

We have one test SP 2010 server on our LAN, it's a standalone server. Everything is working as it should be, except Outgoing Mail setup. The thing is we point outgoing mail server to internal Exchange mail server. We have same configuration for our five MOSS 2007 servers, and they work flawlessly. On 2010 we have same settings from same network but with “not configured” status under Servers Services. What is difference between these two SP setups? Is there something else we needed to do after SP setup or…? Thanks in advance for tips and answers…

Project Server Services remains in Starting status

When trying to start the Project Server service, the service remains in Starting status.

I've tried to stop and restart the service on the server that I want to run and this doesn't help.

These are the services that I see on the server:

Microsoft Project Server Events Service 2010

Microsoft Project Server Queue Service 2010

I'm on SP2010 14.0.5123.5000 (August CU).

This is preventing me from accessing the service to configure and provision my Project Server site.

SQL Server Reporting Service 2008 R2 - The request failed with HTTP status 401: Unauthorized.

I got the error "The request failed with HTTP status 401: Unauthorized." when I call the Reporting Service Web Service.

The code is very simple:

// Initialise the reporting service Web Service

this.RSWebService = new ReportingService2010();

// Pass windos authentication credentials to Web Service

this.RSWebService.Credentials = System.Net.CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials;

// List children

List<CatalogItem> reports = this.RSWebService.ListChildren(folder, false).ToList();

The SQL Server is installed on a different machine (say server A) from the Web server (say server B). We are using Windows Server 2003.

The code work fine for all the scenario below:

i) Run locally (XP) to call the web service on the sql server

ii) Provide the Network Credentials with the username, password, and domain when calling the web service

iii) If the web server and sql server is using same server (i.e. not distributed)

I'm using windows authentication and impersonation. Any idea?

The request failed with HTTP status 407: Proxy Authentication Required (the ISA server requires auth

I'm new to webservice. I writed an example to work with a web service which is supplied on Internet (its url: http://ws.cdyne.com/delayedstockquote/delayedstockquote.asmx ) when i tried running i got an error message as System.Net.WebException was unhandled
  Message="The request failed with HTTP status 407: Proxy Authentication Required ( The ISA Server requires authorization to fulfill the request. Access to the Web Proxy service is denied.  )."

I had found some solutions such as:
+ using ISA firewall
+ configuring proxy from Machine.config
+ inside coding

The first:  I used ISA firewall but i still got the same error, my problem didn't resolve. I guessed that is because ISA firewall needn't use Credentials (username/password).

The second:
 I tried coding in my source, it was okie. This solution is good because following this way i can get defaultCredentials from cache but needn't define straightforwardly my credentials as username/password
my code is as follows:

DelayedStockQuote wsStock =

Windows Server Backup fails when SQL VSS Writer service is running

Hello. On one of our SQL servers, we have SQL Server 2008 Express installed. Whenever is the "SQL Server VSS Driver" service running, backing up the computer with Windows Server Backup will always fail. If I stop SQL VSS writer service, then it the backup will finish successfully, although apparently backup of the SQL DBs is not consistent.

Details:

- backup is executed with "wbadmin start backup -allcritical -backuptarget:d: -vssfull -quiet"

- root of the SQL Server instance (and all DBs, trans. logs etc) are located on a volume E:

- once the backup command is executed, it's stuck on the creating volume shadow copies operation for several minutes, failing afterwards

- SQL VSS Writer has status 8 (failed), last error is "non-retryable"

- eventlog contains myriad of messages since the backup is started (SQL server has hundreds of DBs on it), with variations of these 3 repeating:

  a) SQLVDI: Loc=TriggerAbort. Desc=invoked. ErrorCode=(0). Process=1304. Thread=15788. Server. Instance=SQLEXPRESS. VD=Global\{A4C1E365-459A-4D41-B3D0-1A76DB8E56F6}517_SQLVDIMemoryName_0. Source: SQLVDI, EventID: 1. This is repeated numerous times, where thread id varies and number (517 in this case) in the VD identifier

  b) BACKUP failed to complete the command BACKUP DATABASE

SQL Server VSS Writer -Differential Backup - Does it even work?

I have been trying to develop a tool to do backup/restore of MS SQL Server using SQL Server VSS Writer. I can not get the differential backup working! I am just curious as to whether anyone ever made differential backup using VSS. Here is what I have been doing,
1. Create a full backup and store files and the Backup component document associated with it.
2. Update the tables in the database.
3. Create a new backup by setting 'SetBackupState' as VSS_BT_DIFFERENTIAL
4. Now when adding the existing components to the Backup Component Document, I find the component's time stamp from the document in step 1, and then invoke it with 'SetPreviousBackupStamp'
5. Now after the snapshot is taken, I go through each of the component and invoke 'GetPartialFileCount' API. This always return the value 0. I am assuming if there is a change in an existing component, it should give a value greater than 0.

Am I missing something here? Do we need to start SQL Server VSS Writer using certain parameters or something? I tried different configurations including (Windows Server 2008/ SQL Server 2008)

Cannot reinstall SQL Server 2008; Install wants VSS Writer disk

I uninstalled SQL Server 2008 R2 to replace it with SQL Server 2008 (no R2).  The uninstall was a pain, but after uninstalling SQL Server 2000 and 2008, clearing out the registry, renaming folders and rebooting, I was finally free of R2.  I reinstalled SQL Server 2000 without any trouble, but now I cannot re-install 2008.  First I got an error "The INSTANCESHAREDWOWDIR command line value is not valid", which after some research I was able to resolve by running the setup from the command line.  The setup proceeded until the progress bar was about 50% of the way through, then asked for the VSS Writer disk.

The box is a 64-bit installation of Windows Server 2008 with SP1.  I have SQL Server 2000 installed (as mentioned) and VS 2003, but not 2010 (yet).  There are no SQL Express versions installed.

Can anyone point me to a solution?

TIA

call JavaScript - jQuery code from ASP.NET Server-Side

jQuery got so close to me lately that I can see myself adding the scripts to my project almost unconsciously. The thing is, jQuery is very useful for me, in almost all situations and it has been a do or die enhancement for all my project since I first put my hands on it.

Of course while using it, you encounter few situations which need a bit of research to solve, mostly when you are trying to combine it with some other technologies like: UpdatePanels and ASP.NET Ajax. For instance there are many situations when I would like to run some jQuery magic based on some decision that I make on the server side.

Making Ajax Callbacks to the Server Using jQuery with ASP.NET

In the first part of this article series I introduced jQuery's functionality and how it provides a rich client side programming model. This time around I'll expand on these concepts and show you how you can use jQuery in combination with ASP.NET using it as an AJAX backend to retrieve data. I'll also discuss how you can create ASP.NET controls and otherwise interact with jQuery content from ASP.NET pages in WebForms.

jQuery is just a JavaScript library so it will work seamlessly with ASP.NET both from page code as well as through backend driven code using the Page.ClientScript object or ScriptManager. You can use jQuery on its own as a client side and Ajax library that communicates with ASP.NET or you can use jQuery in combination with ASP.NET AJAX. The two actually complement each other quite well as jQuery provides functionality that the ASP.NET AJAX library does not and vice versa. For the most part the interaction between the two libraries is trouble free except for a few very rare edge cases.

MS SQL Server: Disconnect Users From Database - Kill User Session

If you ever wanted to restore your database from a SQL backup file (.bak), but there are still users connected to your database, the backup operation will fail causing the error: Exclusive access could not be obtained because the database is in use.

MS SQL Server: Search All Tables, Columns & Rows For Data or Keyword Query

If you need to search your entire database for specific data, this query will come in handy.

So when a client needs a custom report or some sort of custom development using Great Plains, most of the time I will have to track down the data in the system by running this query and find the table(s) it is in.
