Include a Crystal Report in .NET Web Service for Dynamic In-Memory-Only DataSet

I would like to use Crystal Reports in a .NET web service.  Ultimately I would like to convert my report document to a PDF and then return the PDF as a byte array.

My .NET DataSet is generated dynamically at run-time.  It consists of four related tables.  Since my DataSet does not have a physical datasource, I created an XML Schema file.  I then added the XML Schema file to the web service project with Add Existing Item.

A solution for working with a dynamic in-memory DataSet exists for ASP.NET web sites and client-based forms.  I tried to use this method as it is published.  When that didn't work I tried creating the report and XML Schema directly in the web service project, but that also didn't work.

The problem is apparent when you try to set the datasource.......the code bombs on the call to SetDataSource(DataSet) with the message
ex = {"The data source object is invalid."}

Crystal Reports would save me a lot

Consistently running out of page file memory with full text indexer

Using MS SQL Server 2008 SP1 x64 Standard Edtion on Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise, I'm about to full-text index for the first time 1 table and 2 views. The table contains about 250'000 entries with a data space of 180 MB. As soon as I activate the full text indexing, the fdhost.exe task starts to consume slowly but surely all the available page file space (this can be easily watched using the Resource Monitor and the Commit Charge graph on the memory tab). Once all the virtual memory has been consumed, the server becomes unusable since it can't open any new windows any more, and RDP stops working. The machine specs are as follows: 12 GB of RAM 80 GB free on hard disk out of 136 GB 8 CPUs Custom size paging file with sizes between 24 GB - 60 GB (originally, this was system managed size, but then the server ran out of memory sooner) Max SQL server memory set to 6 GB (first 10 GB, then 8 GB) I've set the max fulltext crawl range to 8. During the indexing, the 8 CPUs are bit busy for a while, but not excessively. What is astonishing is that there is almost no use of physical memory during the indexing (I can see an increase from 2 GB to 3 GB which still leaves plenty of RAM available). Does anybody have an idea how I can convince fdhost.exe to consume physical memory and leave the paging memory alone? Or what else can I try?

Report Model/Report Builder/Out of Memory Exceptions

We are getting out of memory exceptions on our server. We are using Report Builder against a Report Model in RS2008. Here is part of the errors we are getting. I cannot find any information for an error 200. processing measure group : memory error : the operation cannot be completed because the memory quota

Hi, I'm stucked with this problem. Untill last week, the cube processed without any problem. Since last week, I'm getting this error. I have been searching in different forums, and I tried some suggestions, like changing memory limit properties, ... It is getting worse.. So I reset all properties to default again. I am running SQL-Server + MS-AS 2005 SP2 on server with 4GB of memory. This is a dedicated server, nothing else is running on it. The fact table has +/- 14 million records, several dimensions en 2 measure groups. I don't have problems to process the dimensions, but when I try to process the cube or the measure groups of that cube separately , the error persists. I have changed the datasource view, and replaced the fact table by a Named query. Even when I put a 'WHERE datapart( year , fact_date ) >= 2009 ' clause to reduce the number of records to +/- 5 million, I'm still getting the error. I don't understand what is wrong, the cube always processed since +/- 2 years. As I said, I have found a lot of this kind of Issues on different websites, I have been trying to change some properties. But this still does not solve the problem. Could it be that MS-AS settings are corrupt somewhere ? Is it a good idea to re-install MS-AS 2005 + SP1 + SP2 ? Or is there another reason possible ? I really appreciate any kind of help, because I'm

Hi All: We have installed SQL Server 2008 Integration Services in a Windows 2003 machine. RAM capacity is 4GB We have a created a sample project with necessary data source, data view, cubes and dimension definition. When we try to build the cube, it is throwing the below exception Memory error: The operation cannot be completed because the memory quota estimate (1504MB) exceeds the available system memory (1331MB). We even tried with data view of few columns but encountering the same error. How to fix this issue? Please help Regards, Swami

Can report server use more than 4GB memory if available?

My question is for all who have read this book or not;

SQL Server Reporting Services 2008 Step by Step book by Microsoft press; on page 385 of this book there is a note,

"Regardless of total memory available on the server reporting service is unable to use more than 4 GB of memory"

Now how is that happening? I have not read this anywhere else :-( There is no appropriate explanation about this given in the book either that why it cannot use more than 4 GB of memory if avaialble?

SSRS 2005 Report timeout, Memory out of Exception

The .net code is executing the ssrs ".rdl" file from the ssrs report viewer.
When the report viewer executes the ".rdl" report file below error is displayed.

SSRS 2005 report.
The report displays 10,000 of records successfully, but when the report is supposed to display lakhs of records, the report gets time-out.

I have tried the below changes but still the timeout occurs.
1) In Report manager have selected the "Do not timeout report execution" option.
2) In Machine.config changed the <processModel autoConfig="true" />
to <processModel autoConfig="true" memoryLimit="120"/>
3) In rsreportserver.config changed "MemoryLimit" and "MaximumMemoryLimit" to 120 and 160 respectively.

I had also set the timeout=0 in the sql connecti

How to detect and avoid memory and resources leaks in .NET application

Despite what a lot of people believe, it's easy to introduce memory and resources leaks in .NET applications. The Garbage Collector, or GC for close friends, is not a magician who would completely relieve you from taking care of your memory and resources consumption.

I'll explain in this article why memory leaks exist in .NET and how to avoid them. Don't worry, I won't focus here on the inner workings of the garbage collector and other advanced characteristics of memory and resources management in .NET.

file upload in chunks or not buffering in memory before writing to disk?

What are the options for handling file uploads to reduce the memory footprint?  Is there a way to upload in chunks?  Is there a way to stream upload directly to disk instead of loading entire file in server memory?

Visual Studio 2008 Memory problems

Printing crystal report from webservice

I am trying to print crystal repot directly from a C# application, which is calling webservice. I am able to display report in crystalreportviewer by passing the webservice call to datasource. However, is there anyway, I can print directly without showing the report?

Alternatively, I was trying return ReportDocument object from webservice, which would solve my problem, but I was unable to return the ReportDocument because of serialization issue. Is it even possible? Thank you
