XML Entities

Posted By:      Posted Date: August 29, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net

Writer Daniel Abrahamian describes the formation of XML entities within the context of programmatic function. It is important to understand that an entity itself refers to the physical rather than logical structure of an XML Document. Entities are useful when applied to short documents, as depicted in Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG). The usefulness of entities in this application lies in its ability to define a specific style. For example, if you had an entity called DenyAndProhibit, you could declare it like this:<!ENTITY DenyAndProhibit  "fill:deny;stroke:prohibit">It is then possible to reuse the entity in attribute values throughout the document itself. Even the most basic XML documents utilize at least one entity. It is important to recall that each XML document displays at least one pyysical entity, which is the document entity itself.

ASP.NET 4.0 Dynamic Data and Many to Many Entity Framework Entities

I did not play much with Dynamic Data controls in VS2008 and just made a cool discovery in VS2010 Beta 2. This may not even be new, but as I'm sitting 30,000+ feet over the Atlantic ocean, I don't have access to VS2008 at the moment to check.

Dynamic Data Entities Modal GridViewPager not showing

I am using the ModalEF template, converted to a web application.

The GridViewPager is not showing up, though everything else works fine (filters, updates, etc).

I have tried several things in the last two weeks, to no avail.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

The GridViewPager.ascx.cs Page_Load fires, but the Page_PreRender does not.

Entities Framework 4 Questions

1. Do you have to setup cascading on the SQL server also, or if you setup Cascading in EF 4 that will do it for you, and you can keep Cascading in SQL not setup?

2. Is there any problems I should be aware of like the problems(yet manual fixble) with  using Cascading in EF 4 , MVC 2, SQL 2005.

Thanks :)

Serializing Linq to Entities for use in a REST Service

What would be the best approach to send data retrieved from Linq to Entities over a rest service? For example, if you have a Linq to Entities class, say Products from the Northwind database. I want to return a subset of the Products (based on a query on the model) back through a service. First a retrieve a List<Product> from the context, and then i need to serialize the data and send it over the wire. If I use the exact Linq to Entities class, then there is so much "garbage" that it either fails outright (from a circular reference) or you are wasting bandwith. What is a design to overcome this? Create POCO objects for each linq to entities class you want to send and create custom code to tranform each object in the list to the POCO object? This is the only way I can see doing it, although it would be very tedius to create and maintain (unless some custom code generation was created). Is there a better approach? clients

Is it a good practice to use DataContract attributes on business entities

Hi Folks, Currently I am developing a framwork for travel industry and finally my framework will expose its operations in the form of WCF Service. I was wondering if it is a good idea to decorate your entities and class with DataContract attributes. I know this is required if you want your classes/fields to be serialized/deseralized.  However, by Adding these attributes mean you are making your entities service specific which I believe not a good idea. Service and domain specific entities should be seperate. One solution to this would be to make DTOs and decorate them with these attributes and this make sense as core purpose of these DTOs is serialization and deserialization. What can be other options....? Please share your thoughts. Thanks, Naeem

WF Service using EF4 POCO Entities Issue

Hi I've a WF Service using my EDMX and my Classes generated using a poco t4 template, but on execution when i include navigation properties related to a 1 to many or many to many relationships i got an underlying connection was closed error. I've traced the error and i got 2 exceptions different exceptions depending on which parameters i pass to my context and my ReciveAndSendReply Action. One is the related to that Navigation Property and the fact that it is generating a cyclic reference A.B  B.List<A> or viceversa and cant be serialized. The other changing my context property to enabling/disabling the proxy creation i get a overflow on the max message size or max message on the trace (the cyclic reference is doing an overflow and the entity back from the WF service is not coming back. Hope you can help me guys to figure out whats going on. Thx Pedro

Collections for inherited entities...

So I'm coding up a simple blogging/content application in MVC2. In my EF domain model I have an abstract entity named "Resource" which serves as a base class for any content that can be published. I have entities named "Picture", "BlogEntry" and "Event" which all inherit from "Resource". My problem is, it seems it doesn't make collections for Pictures, BlogEntries and Events. I only have a collection of Resources. How can I get collections of the inherited classes? Is it something I'll have to create myself? If so, how?

Custom Field - SP is creating HyperLinks and using HTML entities

Hello. I'm seeking help with a problem related to a custom field in SharePoint 2010. Our Custom Field builds upon (extends) the SPFieldMultiLineText field. Data saved to our Custom Field is being processed by SharePoint before it is sent to the client. For example < and > is replaced by HTML entities (&lt; and &gt;). Text such as http://bing.com and mail@bing.com is automatically being converted to hyper links (<a href="mailto:mail@bing.com">mail@bing.com</a>). Is it in any way possible to have SharePoint deliver the data as it was stored in the custom field? We don't want it to replace HTML with HTML entites, nor should it create hyperlinks automatically. I have attached our XSL file below. <xsl:stylesheet xmlns:x="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/sharepoint/dsp" version="1.0" exclude-result-prefixes="xsl msxsl ddwrt" xmlns:ddwrt="http://schemas.microsoft.com/WebParts/v2/DataView/runtime" xmlns:asp="http://schemas.microsoft.com/ASPNET/20" xmlns:__designer="http://schemas.microsoft.com/WebParts/v2/DataView/designer" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform" xmlns:msxsl="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:xslt" xmlns:SharePoint="Micros

Service Operation with Joins between entities

Hello, I have a service operation that queries multiple entities in a data source using joins. However, I can't seem to get to the joined entity, either when browsing the data service in IE, or when consuming the data service in the silverlight client code. With this code in the data service operation method: var query = from o in crmOnline.opportunityopportunities join su in crmOnline.systemusers on o.ownerid.Value equals su.systemuserid select o; Should I not be able to view the data service in a browser and see the systemusers like this (the service operation takes two arguments, userid and org): http://localhost:6246/convoservice.svc/filteredresults?userid='22222222-f3sw-aahh-hy65-nn88dd3333ee'&org='testorg'/systemusers or to consume it in the client like this foreach (opportunity opp in response) { string name = opp.name; string ownername = opp.opportunity_owning_user.fullname; ... ? In either scenario, I'm not having success. When browsing the URL posted above, I get an http 400 "webpage cannot be found" error. I get a null reference exception in the client. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Web: http://invoc.net

Change connection string of Linq to Sql entities

Hi all.I have a solution which uses Linq to SQL Data Classes to acced the db. I have a project for my domain objects in my solution, which is a class library and has the dbml file. When I set up the dmbl using the wizard, Visual Studio created an app.config file on that project with the connection string. It also creatting a settings file with the same info. I've noticed that if I change the connection string in the settings file, the app.config gets updated, which is the expected behaviour. However, I'm having a problem when I deploy my web site to the production server. I already set the app.config file's Build Action to "Content", and also set Copy to ouput directory to "Always". Nevertheless, when I install the web site and change the connection string in the app.config file, it still takes the old connection string, so obviously I get an error. I've found that it only works if I change it with in Visual Studio and then compile, but of course that's not an optimal solution, because any change in the production db server would mean I have to change my project's assembly, thus generating a new version.Any thing I'm missing? What do I have to configure so that the assembly takes the connection string form my app.config file directly after I deploy? Thanks a lot.

Entity Framework POCO and WCF Data Service - Lazy-loading (expand?) related entities?

I've followed ScottGu article on creating an Entity Framework POCO classes for NerdDinners (right now there are only 2 classes, Dinner and RSVP. I then created a WCF Data Service class, which points to my EF class (NerdDinner), everything is working fine, except I can't lazy-load or expand related entities. For example, I want to get all load all the Dinners and their related RSVPs, something like this throw an error:var result = (from d in db.Dinners.Expand("RSVPs")                      select d);The error is a null reference error:at System.Data.Services.Serializers.SyndicationSerializer.WriteObjectProperties(IExpandedResult expanded, Object customObject, ResourceType resourceType, Uri absoluteUri, String relativeUri, SyndicationItem item, DictionaryContent content, EpmSourcePathSegment currentSourceRoot) at System.Data.Services.Serializers.SyndicationSerializer.WriteEntryElement(IExpandedResult expanded, Object element, ResourceType expectedType, Uri absoluteUri, String relativeUri, SyndicationItem target) ... ... ...Any idea why or what I need to do to load related contents?Thank you very much.

Left Outer Join in LINQ + Entities

HiI have found quite a bit of info on the net, but I can't get it to work. Here's the normal SQL query:SELECT cl.ID AS ClientID, cl.Name, cl.Surname, CLC1.PHONECODE + ' ' + CLC1.PHONENUMBER AS WorkNum, CLC2.PHONECODE + ' ' + CLC2.PHONENUMBER AS HomeNum, CLC3.PHONECODE + ' ' + CLC3.PHONENUMBER AS CellNum, CLC1.PREFERRED AS WorkNumPref, CLC2.PREFERRED AS HomeNumPref, CLC3.PREFERRED AS CellNumPref, veh.ID AS VehicleID, veh.MAKE, veh.MODEL, veh.YEAR, veh.REGNO, ws.ID AS WorkshopID, ws.JOBTYPE, ws.SERVICEADVISOR, ws.TIMEFINISHED, ws.TECHNICIAN, fs.ID as FollowupID, fs.TYPE, fs.DESCRIPTION, fs.SCHEDULEDATE, fs.WRONGNUMBERFLAG FROM CLIENTS AS cl LEFT OUTER JOIN CLIENTCONTACTNUMBERS AS CLC1 ON cl.ID = CLC1.CLIENTID AND CLC1.TYPE = 'W' LEFT OUTER JOIN CLIENTCONTACTNUMBERS AS CLC2 ON cl.ID = CLC2.CLIENTID AND CLC2.TYPE = 'H' LEFT OUTER JOIN CLIENTCONTACTNUMBERS AS CLC3 ON cl.ID = CLC3.CLIENTID AND CLC3.TYPE = 'C' INNER JOIN CLIENTVEHICLES AS clveh ON cl.ID = clveh.CLIENTID INNER JOIN VEHICLES AS veh ON clveh.VEHICLEID = veh.ID INNER JOIN WSBOOKINGS AS ws ON clveh.ID = ws.CLIENTVEHICLEID INNER JOIN FOLLOWUPSCHEDULE AS fs ON fs.WSBOOKINGID = ws.ID WHERE fs.ID = 2 There is a multiple join between CLIENTS and CLIENTCONTACTNUMBERS so it would return a single row of data. If you were to do a normal join on CLIENTS and C

Entities does not recognize the method

Hi, I receive this error message:LINQ to Entities does not recognize the method 'System.Guid GetUserId()' method, and this method cannot be translated into a store expression. This is my code:DB.Users user = db.Users.FirstOrDefault(u => u.Id == BOL.GetUserId()); BOL.GetUserId() returns a GUID of the current logged-in user (and this works works). How can I make this LINQ code line work?Or, what is the shortest alternative? Thanks!   UPDATE: In the mean time I found out that there is a difference between LINQ to SQL and Entities. I use Entities because of the TailspinSpyworks example... but my code is using LINQ to SQL. My current solution is to use a var:var userId = BOL.GetUserId();DB.Users user = db.Users.FirstOrDefault(u => u.Id == userId); Is this a good solution? And, is the execution time of Entities faster than SQL?

Entities Data Models with multiple Categories using a membership table

(Using SQL Server 2008 and ASP.NET MVC2) I have a simple business table and a category table. I have a 3rd table to map business to category, a many-to-many relationship. the Map table contains a BusinessID and CategoryID. I'm lost as to how I can load the categories into my Business View Model using the entities model.Without incorporating categories, my code looks like this: var businessList = from b in entitiesDB.Businesses select new Models.BusinessViewModel { BusinessID = b.BusinessID, Name = b.Name } with Business View Model defined as: public class BusinessViewModel { [ScaffoldColumn(false)] public Guid BusinessID { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } public List<Models.CategoryViewModel> Categories { get; set; } } but if i want to populate the Categories with the mapped categories, how would one do that? Thanks in advance for any help!

Working with Parent Child Entities

Hello,

i am working on POCO entities.

i had a requirement to provide Edit feature for parent and respective Child records in single View.

Eg: Parent-Customer, Child-Order tables

when updating the parent entity by using => UpdateModel(CustomerIns);

and updating the child entity by using => TryUpdateModel(CustomerIns.Order, "Orders");

The Child Controls Names are like Orders[0].OrderID,Oders[0].OrderDate,etc

The Parent and Child Entities are updating when UpdateModel() is called but when saving Changes by calling Context.SaveChanges() i am getting exception like:

"The operation failed: The relationship could not be changed because one or more of the foreign-key properties is non-nullable. When a change is made to a relationship, the related foreign-key property is set to a null value. If the foreign-key does not support null values, a new relationship must be defined, the foreign-key property must be assigned another non-null value, or the unrelated object must be deleted."

How to use SP with Linq to Entities?

Hi!

How to use Stored Procedures with Linq to Entities?
I prefer an example with input and output

The videos on asp.net only show how to do this with Linq to SQL.

Thank you!

Linq to entities: Always select before delete and update?

Hi,

With linq to entities, how can I delete and update data inside a database without first selecting the complete entity at first?
The idea behind this is to improve performance.

Thanks!
