Beginner: this doesn't make sense to me

Posted By:      Posted Date: August 21, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net

Do you need and "empty" script tag in the head to run scripts that are in the body?  Also, can you run JQuery scripts if they're in the <head> tag?  The first sample only works if the JQuery script is in the form (and body) tag, not in the head - even if I add $(document).ready(function() { });

This works

<head runat="server">
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.4.2/jquery.min.js" />
<script type="text/javascript">
<form id="form1" runat="server">
<a href="">Here is a link</a>
<script type="text/javascript">
$('a').click(function () {
alert("you clicked me!");

This doesn't work.  Notice I removed the second <script> tag from the head

Say What?: Make Sense of Your Web Feedback using SQL Server 2005

By now, you're certainly collecting a variety of data from your Web site. But once you collect it, what do you do with it. For it to be meaningful, this data must be categorized and analyzed. The SQL Server 2005 data mining functionalities can help you get the most out of those reams of data you collect, as Peter Pyungchul Kim explains.

What is the standard practice to make sure one slow-running page doesn't affect other pages?

Page A loads very fast; Page B loads very slowly and does some CPU-intensive things on the web server.I noticed that if someone is loading Page B, then Page A also loads slowly - for ALL users. What is the standard practice for making sure this doesn't happen?  If multiple users are loading Page B at the same time then Page A is ridiculously slow.Is there an IIS setting, web.config setting, or hardware configuration I could use to make sure that the fast-loading pages aren't bogged down by other pages that need more time to load?

How to make sure that user doesn't open same webpage in two different browsers or browser tabs?

We are using asp.net StateServer for asp.net session management. In our project we need to make sure that if a user is already logged in and if he is trying to acess the website from a different browser tab, we need to inform him that he is already logged in in another tab and use it instead of opening a new session. Consider the following scenarios:

1. User is logged on in tab1 and his session is still on, then user tries to logon from another tab, the browser sends the asp.net session_id cookie, In the page init i am checking if the Asp.net session Id cookie is present, if it is there i am checking if the it is a new Session (i.e. if the existing session timed out), if it is a new session then proceed with the user action else it means that the session in tab1 is still active so i am redirecting user to error page with appropriate message.

Now the problem with this approach is that, suppose session in tab1 is expired and user opens tab2 and performs some actions, now he goes back to tab1 and perform any action, i directly need to take him to log out page.

Please let me know how this can be achieved.

mvc... it make a lot of sense for me

perhaps it's my exposure to php frameworks, but asp.net mvc makes perfect sense to me.  the logic is there to build a well organized website, and it really doesn't seem more difficult than using web forms.  is it wise for me to jump straight into asp.net mvc from php or would you recommend I learn web forms first?

StateMachine: What Triggers make sense?

I am testing the new WF State Machine Activity Pack CTP 1 and am wondering what activity to use for a Trigger in the transitions. All examples I saw are with a Delay activity. Receive activity was mentioned, but what I really need is to set from the outside a variable - e.g. "trigger" to some value (like "event1" or "event2) and then the corresponding transition should be triggered. Should the transitions have While or If activity as a trigger?

Making Sense of ASP.NET Paths

ASP.Net includes quite a plethora of properties to retrieve path information about the current request, control and application. There's a ton of information available about paths on the Request object, some of it appearing to overlap and some of it buried several levels down, and it can be confusing to find just the right path that you are looking for.

Need Syntax To Make Results of LINQ Union Return Non-Generic Type

I have the below SQL which works just fine:

SELECT     Message, CreateDate, AccountId, AlertTypeId
FROM       dbo.Alerts
SELECT     TOP (100) PERCENT Status, CreateDate, AccountId,
                          (SELECT     10 AS Expr1) AS AlertTypeId
FROM         dbo.StatusUpdates
WHERE AccountId = PassedInParameter

I have been going about trying to convert the above into a LINQ method and am having problems with return types.
As the above SQL illustrates, I am querying two distinct LINQ tables - Alerts and StatusUpdates -
and then attempting to perform a Union on them. In order to do the union in LINQ, I have to have agreeing types. So, I
am using "var" to make the results of "alerts" and "updates" generic before the union.

public IList GetStatusUpdatesAsAlertsByAccountId<T>(Int32 accountId)
            using (WorkbookDataContext dc = _conn.GetCont

Mobile beginner's inquiry

I've developed web applictions in VB in VS2005 pro and want to get started on developing mobile applications in VB now that I've upgraded to VS2010 pro.  It's proving to be more difficult to get off the ground than I expected.  It would seem that there have been several toolkits for developing mobile applications since NET 2.0 -- some obsolete -- and the web refences I've been going through seem to be a mishmash of broken links, circular references and dead ends.

When I click on toolbox -> choose toolbox items, all of the system.web.ui.mobilecontrols are there.  But they never turn up in my toolbox.  And I can't find a way of beginning a  mobile website project, either.  Nor can I find any examples of mobile ASP.NET development in either the samples included with VS2010 or online at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/vstudio/dd238515.aspx

My needs are simple: can somebody tell me what additions or configuration changes I need to make to prepare my VS2010 setup for working with ASP.NET 4.0 mobile controls?  And once this is there any good tutorial for learning mobile website develpment that doesn't involve contracting with a third party?  How about a good book for learning the CURRENT tec
