Can't connect to SQL 2005 Enterprise using Management Studio with Server Name (only (local) works

Posted By:      Posted Date: August 28, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server

This is a test system, everything running locally & no domains. Win 2003 Ent. Server & SQL Server 2005 Enterprise. I can't log into SQL Server Management Studio using the server name & using either Windows Authentication or SQL login. If I change the name of the server in the drop-down list to "(local)", I connect just fine (both Windows & SQL security modes). Shared Memory, Named Pipes & TCP/IP enabled in both server & client. Remote connections allowed. I have IP adresses (both 127.0.0.1 & external IP) in my hosts file pointing to the server name. Does SQL require a DNS server? This wouldn't be a problem except for the fact that I can't install SQL 2005 SP3 due to authentication failure since there's no way to enter (local) as the server name. SQL tools (management studio, SP install) seem to see the SQL server running but won't authenticate the user through any means other than setting server name to (local). This is driving me crazy!!!

Please Help Installing SQL Management Studio (not Express) w/ local SQL Server Express

I have recently formatted my hard drive and over the past few days I've been reloading my software.  I have installed on my machine SQL Server Express 2005 SP3.  I prefer to have SQL Express running on my development machine because that is what my customers primarily use.  I also have a full MSDN license, and I would need to install SQL Management Studio 2005.  However, when I download the SQL Server 2005 Developer ISO from MSDN, and run the setup file I get an error message that states: Installation of Microsoft SQL Server Native Client failed because a higher version already exists on the machine.  To proceed, uninstall the higher version and then run Microsoft SQL Server Native Client Setup. I would assume the problem is that the copy of SQL Server - Dev Edition that is available through my MSDN subscription is using an earlier version of SQL Server 2005 (most likely the version prior to SP1.)  I would just unistall SQL Server Express 2005 SP3 and reinstall it with out any service pack updates.  The problem is that I also see within my Add or Remove Programs list  four SQL Server 2008 R2 entries, that I believe were installed when I installed Visual Studio Pro 2010 (they are, Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Data-Tier Application Framework, Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Data-Tier Application Project, Microsoft SQL Server 20

Getting Sql Server Management Studio 2008 installed on local computer

Hello, I have been trying to figure out this problem for a while now so hopefully someone can help me out - I would really appreciate it! Right now I have SQl Server Management Studio2005 installed on my computer for a SQL sever that we have. We recently got a 2008 sql server and if I remotely access the server, I can see that SQL Management Studio 2008 has been isntalled on the new server. I need to build new databases but need SQL Management Studio 2008 on my computer and I have no idea how to get it. I have a "Microsoft SQl Server 2008 R2" folder on my computer, and I have already tried clicking on "Configuration Tools" and then "SQL Server Installation center" and it isntalls a bunch of things, but none of them are "SQL Server Management Studio 2008."  I also found a link on a Microsoft website that says it's SQL Server Management studio 2008 R2 but it was just the same bunch of programs I already downloaded. How do I install Sql Server Managment Studio 2008 on my computer?! Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

SQL Server 2005 64bit Install - Missing Management Studio

Good Afternoon,

I just installed SQL Server 2005 64bit on a fresh system with no other applications loaded on running on the new server.

The only other component that was installed with the SS2K5 database services is SSIS. The base installation and the SP2 patch went on perfect.

I went looking for the Management Studio thru the Start menu options and it is NOT under the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 group. The only options under the SS2K5 group are "Configuration Tools" and "Docs and Tutorials".

Here are file names that I downloaded from the MS website and installed.

   SW CD SQL Svr Enterprise Edtn 2005 64Bit X64 English #1 x64 MLF.x11-57796 (which is a zipped)

   SQLServer2005SP2-KB921896-x64-ENU

There was also another zipped file that I tried to install but it seems to be a duplicate of the zipped file above:

SW CD SQL Svr Enterprise Edtn 2005 64Bit X64 English #2 x64 MLF.x11-57797

Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks ALL!

Management Studio for SQL Server 2005 Standard

I'm new to SQL Server and am just getting started with it. I received a copy of SQL Server 2005 Standard edition from the Launch Party here in Ottawa and successfully installed it on my server yesterday. I've look around the Internet, as well as the DVD for SQL Server Management Studio, but I have been unable to find it. The only thing that I have been able to find the the Management Studio Express which targets SQL Server 2005 Express. Can someone direct me to the Management Studio that targets the Standard edition?

Thank you.

SQL Server Management Studio 2005 forgets password?

I have a strange problem, every month the Connect to Server dialog in SQL Server 2005 Mgmt Studio will forget my passwords to all the servers I connect (yes I do have the Remember Password checked) to.

Anyone have this problem?

There is no "reset" or password clearing function I'm aware of?

This is a pain in to keep re-entering them as they are 40+ cryptic characters long.  Doing  a Google and I see this problem appears to be pretty common:

Unable to Connect to SQL Serrver using SQL Server Management Studio

I just installed the 64bit version of SQL Server using the Developer edition CD for SQL Server.  The problem I'm having is that I cannot connect to SQL Server using SQL Server Management Studio.  I’m getting the message “a network-related or instance specific error occurred while establishing a connection to sql server. the server was not found or not accessible. verify that the instance name is correct and that sql server is configured to allow remote connections.”.  I’ve done a lot of Google searches but yet to find a solution.  I've checked to be sure it is started and enabled all protocols except VIA.  I have remote connections allowed.  I used the default name MSSQLSERVER which is what I'm using to connect to in Management Studio.

Can someone help, I have no idea what to check now.  BTW, I've also installed SP3.

[SQL-DMO] You must use SQL Server 2005 management tools to connect to this server

The application I'm using is throwing an error when trying to connect so SQL Server 2005.

If I go to Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Services and Applications, Microsoft SQL Servers, 2005 Server, I get this message:

A connection could not be established to [server name].

Reason: [SQL-DMO] You must use SQL Server 2005 management tools to connect to this server.

Please verify SQL Server is running and check your SQL Server registration properties and try again.

I have SQL 2000 and SQL 2005 installed on my pc.  I'm not having any problems with 2000.

Cannot connect Visual Studio 2008 to Sql Server 2005

I have Windows 7 and installed Visual Studio 2008 Pro and also installed SQL server developer addiotion that comes with VS. After creating a test database in SQL maangement studio and adding the standard asp.net membership provider tables with the aspnet_regsql tool, I created a web project and added a connection string to the web.config file to connect to the database.

No matter what, I cannot connect to the database.

I can create a connection through the server explorer in visual studio and when I drag a sqldatasource onto my page and configure it I can connect to the database etc. But no web.config connection.

This worked on my XP pro machine but not Windows 7.

Has anybody had this problem and what am I doing wrong.

thanks
