SQL 2008 R2 Full Clustering

Posted By:      Posted Date: August 28, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server
I was recently informed during a Microsoft Roadmap meeting that SQL2008R2 can now be fully clustered. That is full load balancing across SQL servers not just Failover. However, having come away from the meeting and done some investigation I cannot find any references as to how to setup SQL2008R2 in anything other than a failover cluster. My question is ... Is SQL 2008 R2 fully clusterable ... and if Yes where can I find some documentation helping with its setup ?   Thanks in advance Derek

SQL 2008 Full-Text-Catalog Population Schedule "Repopulate catalog" grayed-out (inactive)

We've recently upgraded our server from SQL 2000 to SQL 2008 and we're having a problem scheduling the recurring repopulation of our full-text search catalogs.

Under the "General" page of the "Full-Text Catalog Properties" window, the "Repopulate catalog" radio button is disabled (grayed out).

Under the "Population Schedule" page  of the "Full-Text Catalog Properties" window, the "Population Type" dropdown contains ONLY "Catalog - optimze".  How do we schedule the full-text catalog repopulation? What setting are we missing?

Enable Full Text Index in VWD 2008 / SQL Server Express 2008

Hi, I am using VWD 2008 Express and SQL Server 2008 Express. I want to enable full text index in some of my table. How do I do that? I only have  SQL Server Management Studio Express 2008. As far as I know, I cannot use SQL Server Management Studio Express 2008 to update the full text catalog according to : http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms365247.aspx

My tables are also not enable Full Text Search by default.

Any help would be very much appreciated!

Edit 1: Someone had a similar problem to mine on this link: http://forums.asp.net/t/1169961.aspx
I installed the Sql Server 2008 Express with Advance Services and made sure that Full Text functionality is installed. However I don't get a full text menu in SQL Server Management Studio.

Edit 2: I uninstall and reinstall SQL Server 2008 Express with Advance Services but still couldn't be able to enable full text index.

Edit 3: After see this, I guess I have to do it manually then:  http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?siteid=1&PostID=3912985

SQL Server 2008 Management Studio Express and full version

We have SQL server 2008 installed in a virtual server and I just want to download tools for querying etc...om my pc. I downloaded the SQL Server 2008 Managemnt Express and installed the tools. My DBA is saying remove the express install and install the tools from the full version. Is he correct or could I have used the SSME install to query the full version?

SSRS 2008 and Clustering.

I am trying to install SSRS 2008 on a clustered environment. I have found so many contradicting views on web regarding SSRS and clustering. My understanstanding on SSRS and SQL 2008 server cluster(2-node) is that :

1. SSRS2008 is not cluster aware.

2. We can cluster the Reporting Databases. We already have a SQL server 2008 clustering. I guess, we need to install Reporting Databases on both of them.

3. We can install report server on each node in the cluster but that will not be cluster aware(the fail over does not take place).

4. Is there any way we can install report server on a cluster? Right now, we are planning to have one Report server that runs on the sql cluster which has Report databases in it(this  way Report databases are clustered). It would be nice if we could have report server also clustered.

Please advice.

full-text search in SQl 2005 and 2008

Considering that full text search engine is now integrated into SQL in 2008 version comparing to 2005, has anybody notice any difference in full text search speed after migrating from 2005 to 2008 using the same type of hardware?

SQL Server 2008 GEO/Multisite Clustering

I would like to know when and if SQL Sever 2008 will support multisite clustering and how to achive this. I have already installed/tested the basic multisite clustering for static data but would like a more detailed document on the procedures. everything so far have been general high level with papers indicating it can be done but give no real direction on the configuration.

Full text search missing from one instance on one node of 3 node MSSQL 2008 cluster

Hello to all,

I just started at a new client and on becoming familiar with the environment, I noticed that one of our instances on one node is missing the full text search option. The instance is not active on this node but I fear that if we ever need to failover it wont work.

The full text option is installed on the active node instance and the other passive node.

How do I add the full text search option to the instance on the node thats missing it ?

thank you.

SSRS 2008 and Windows Clustering

I am trying to do SSRS scale out deployment on our Cluster. I am confused in which way I should proceed, based on what I have read and done, i am having two ideas.

FYI:node1 and node 2 are clustered and node3 has SAN.The configuration is active-active configuration. The SQL server clustering works fine. Now, I have to add SSRS  functionality to the cluster. SSRS is not cluster aware, so I have to do a scale out deployment.

Here is my Plan A:

1.Install SSRS on both the nodes (node1, node2) and have them pointing to the same database or  same report database instance. Have NLB on top of it.  I guess NLB is built in feautre in microsoft Windows Server 2008 and it supports this.

Here is plan B:

 2. have two more machines (node 4, node 5) and install report server on them pointing to the same Database on cluster.Have NLB on top off it.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Restore an SQL 2008 full backup to SQL Serveer 2005

Dear All,

I have been working on a database on my laptop that has SQL Server 2008 Ktma installed.

The database was restored from a full backup that I had taken from the production SQL 2005 server.

Now that I have finished my job I want to restore it back to the production Server (SQL 2005). I took the backup with "No compression" on a disk file through the SQL 2008 Management studio.

However when trying to restore the SQL 2008 backup onto the SQL server 2005 I get an error:

The media family on device xxxx is incorreclty formed ....

Can someone help me on this. Is it possible that sql 2008 backups are not compatible to the sql 2005 structure?

Is there anyway to have my database restored back on the sql server 2005?

Thank you in advance,

S. Menegos

PS: It is not an issue of malformed file since I did the process several times (taking the backup, coping to the sql server 2005 machine).

How do I view Full-text search catalogs in SQL Server 2008 Express?

I've installed SQL Server 2008 express with advanced services on my Vista Home Premium, and have enabled Full-text search.

"SELECT fulltextserviceproperty('IsFulltextInstalled');" returns 1, and using CREATE FULLTEXT CATALOG mycatalog I was able to create my Full-text search catalog. I was then able to create full-text indexes on my DB columns, and even search through them.

However, there is no &

I'm running SQL Server 2008 (SP1) Standard Edition on Windows 2003 Server. I tried to install the full text service from the disk but am getting the errors below related to dependencies. Has anyone encountered this before? There was no previous installation of SQL on this box. I cannot find anything on this specific issue anywhere. Thanks!
