SQL Server Express 2008 Setup fails. Support Rule "Restart Computer" Failed

Posted By:      Posted Date: August 28, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server
Hi, I have been trying to install SQL Server Express for most of the day now without any luck.  Whatever I do setup fails at the stage of Setup Support Rules, Rule "Restart Computer" - Failed.  Needles to say I have restarted (several times!) and I have tried downloading  and installing the "Advanced", "Tools" and "Basic" versions, all give the same error.  Trying a repair does the same.  I have been searching the net for an answer without success, any help would be MUCH appreciated. Further info: I am trying to install a stand-alone installation on to a single PC running under XP SP 3 with .NET 3.5 SP1 installed.  The PC did have some earler versions of SQL server installed but I (?hopefully?) removed all of these through Control Panel.  Before trying the first SQL install I installed Windows installer 4.5 and PowerShell 1.0 as per the Microsoft Instructions. Running SQL Server Configuration Manager results in an error (MMC could not create the snap-in. The snap in might not have been installed correctly).  A directory structure for SQL server exists in "Program Files".  Services MSC shows SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) as Automatic Statup (not running).  Trying to start this manually gives error 14001: "application configuration incorrect - re-install to fix" .......... Which is precisely what I'm trying to do.........:(

Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server 2008 Express with Advance Services in Visual Studio

I used SQL Server 2008 Express with Advanced Services (not SQL Server 2008 Express) in Visual Studio 2010 because it is the fast and easy way to developed and managed data-driven applications with powerful built-in reporting and full-text search functionality. I received Sql Server 2008 Service Pack 1 with Windows Update. It's ok if I connect to instance of SQL Server 2008 Express with Advance Services (with SP1) through SQL Server Management, but if I try to attach a database in Server Explorer (Visual Studio 2010), I get the following error: "Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed." I'm stuck at this point. Is there a fix or a workaround? I've already tried deleting the 'C:\Users\Administrtor\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server Data\SQLEXPRESS' directory as mentioned in other posts, with no luck. The error.log at 'C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server Data\SQLEXPRESS\error.log' has the following relevant entries: 2010-09-01 14:44:10.47 Server      Error: 17156, Severity: 16, State: 1. 2010-09-01 14:44:10.47 Server      initeventlog: Could not initiate the EventLog Service for the key '3677F6D3-17C7-4F', last error code is 2. 2010-09-01 14:44:10.47 Server &

SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Bootstrapper Package for Setup Projects

Does SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Reporting Service support Shared Datasets?

I have spent a few hours trying to get this to work. I am using Report Builder 3.0 (locally), with SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Edition on a remote web server. I am running Report Builder as an Admin under Win7 64bit. All is OK until I attempt a Save of a newly created shared dataset. The error message is: Failed to save dataset "mydataset.rsd" The feature "Shared dataset" is not supported in this edition of Reporting Services. Details: The feature: "Shared dataset" is not supported in this edition of Reporting Services. ---> Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.Utilities.OperationNotSupportedException: The feature: "Shared dataset" is not supported in this edition of Reporting Services. I have researched the web, and the list of features for Express Edition does not list this feature as not being supported, although it does list "Shared component library" as being missing. Could anyone please confirm the situation please. If it is  a bug, is there any fix or workaround?  John Walton

Windows 7, SQL Server 2008 Express & VWD 2008 Express Setup Problems

Hi I have Windows 7 Home Premium, and Visual Web Developer Express 2008 (which came with SP1) installed. SQL Server 2008 Express never worked - Windows 7 won't allow the Management Studio to be installed and VWD was asking for SQL Server 2005.  Looking on the web, I found advice to try the 32 bit version of SQL Server instead.  This would work with VWD, apparently.  I referred to these instructions (http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/6/3/163A851B-D956-42E9-B426-F5C0EBE6B654/ReleaseNotes.htm) and used the latest links and instructions, but I could not install SQL Server at all - apparently something to do with WOW64... This has been going on for a WHILE and I'm going nuts.  I am reluctant to uninstall VWD and start again, because I had to manually fix a few things, and now it's working...  PLEASE can someone tell me of a working configuration, I have read SO MUCH advice on this, and none works, including those release notes (unless I missed something) :(

SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup fails to install properly

Hello, I am not able to install 2008 R2 on my laptop. I have 2005 and 2008 installed previously. It says in one of the attached screenshots that the OLAP service cannot be started. I have attached the errors in screenshots and also my summary log, please advise thank you.

Edit: I am able to manually startup the SQL 2008 R2 service, and can login as "sa" without a password... but strangely I did select mix mode authentication and did supply a password during the installation wizard too..

SQL Server 2008 Installation on SBS 2003 - Rule "Operating system supported for edition" failed

I'm trying to install SQL Server 2008 for Small Business, on a Windows Server 2003 SBS, which is a Domain Controller on a less than 50 users ' domain. I'm logged in with the Administrator account, wich belongs to the 'Doman admins' group also. Setup failed with this error:

SQL Server Express 2008 instance fails to start

I've installed SQL Server Express with a named instance 'SQLSERVER2'. I was able to connect to it and reference it in the management studio. There was a problem though with Visual Studio 9 when running an ASP.NET web application that required connecting to the same instance. So, I went into the configuration manager to change the security level of the instance from network to local service. The change went through but could not restart the instance. That is what has created my next round of problems. I can't go in and change it back to network because the instance is permanently stopped. I cannot start it with the services manager. How can I fix this?

Here is the connection log:

SQL Server 2008 r2 - Setup support files - Install error / reading from file

I'm installing SQL server 2008 r2 on a Win2003 R2 x86 system.

After i start the setup, the "setup support files" box begins installing, after a while i get this error:

"Error reading from file f:\1033_ENU_LP\x86\setup\sqlsupport_msi\PFiles\SqlServr\100\Setup\ewbfphdh\x86\Patch\rs2000.msp verify that the file exists and that you can access it."

I've tried another DVD, i've tried a mounted share on another machine...no go....i've tried an ISO file mounted on this server... same error.

Is there any way i can install this "setup support files" from another location? (download)

Is there a switch soo it won't install reporting services? (...i think this file rs2000.msp is from reporting services)

SQL Server 2008 R2 Italian setup fails

I'm trying to install the italian version of sql server 2008 r2 on Windows 7 professional (language IT). I've tried different option:

1. from Microsoft Web platform site (failed)

2. using it_sql_server_2008_r2_express_x86.exe downloaded from the MSDN site (failed) from a command prompt with Administrative privileges

3. using it_sql_server_2008_r2_express_with_advanced_services_x86.exe downloaded from MSDN site (failed) from a command prompt with Administrative privileges

4. using the unpackaged content of the it_sql_server_2008_r2_express_with_advanced_services_x86.exe and running setup /ENU="False" (failed) from a command prompt with Administrative privileges

The setup program does not start and a message box is displayed saying:

"SQL Server setup media does not support the language of the OS or does not have ENU localized files. Use the matching language-specific SQL Server media or change the OS locale through Control Panel." The package is for the italian language, the OS language is Italian, the Language settings in Control panel are all for Italian.

It seems there is something wrong with the installation package. I've installe

SQL Server 2008 Express w/ Tools Setup

On a Win 7 x64 Ultimate box, I am unable to install 2008 SSMS.  (Sql Server Express 2008 installed without SSMS from Visual Studio 2010 installation.)

I removed all SQL components and downloaded x64 and then tried x86 SSExpWT.  Both failed with the same error.   I realize this is not an Express forum but hoping I get some direction quickly.  Thanks in Advance.

Preventing SQL Server 2008 Express install fails

I'm working on an installer, that installs SQL Server 2008 Express SP1 (soon I will upgrade to SP2) silently, so that my customers can install it without making choises. It all works fine, except of course when the SQL Server installer fails for some reason.

I start the installer with the following parameters:

/QUIETSIMPLE /ACTION=Install /Configurationfile={tmp}\sql2008setup.ini

The ini file simply looks like this:

I do not wish to keep coding my installer reactively, meaning I want to take care of install issues before they happen on the customer side. Therefore I would like to ask here, and find all possible error scenarios, and code my way around them.

I have read the Installing SQL Server 2008 article, but I still have some questions.

This is what I have come up with for my installer so far:

   1. Only install on OS equal or higher

SQL Server 2008 Express Management Studio fails to install because it thinks visual studio is instal

I tried to install SQL Server 2008 R1 Express with Tools on Windows Server 2008 R2. It installed, but the management studio failed to install because it said I already had Visual Studio installed and it needed Visual Studio service pack 1 before Management Studio could install.

Visual Studio is nowhere to be found in Programs and Features, and when I try to install Visual Studio SP1, it won't install, saying:

A compatible version of Visual Studio 2008 was not detected on the system. This update is designed for only the Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 (ENU) product family, and is not compatible with any Express editions.

Though I can't find any Express version of SP1 to try, and there is no SP1 in windows update.

Installing SQL Server Express 2008 as pre-requisite fails

A customer of mine runs Windows XP SP3 and is trying to install my software which has SQL Express 2008 as a pre-requisite but the install fails every time. The error message is:

"An error occured attempting to install SQl Server 2008 Express Edition"

The setup log file contains:

Property: [ProcessorArchitecture] = Intel {string}

Property: [VersionNT] = 5.1.3 {version}

Is SQL Server 2008 Express edition provide XMLA support?

Hi There,

Installing SQL Server Express 2008: Powershell failed

During the install of SQL Server Express 2008 I get an error "Powershell failed". I tried to find a Powershell download but only found a "Powershell snap in" and that won't install on XP Home SP3. I get a message it should be installed using "Programs and Services" or "Servers". I can't find these on XP Home (perhaps using a dutch windows version doesn't help). I just want to install SQL Express and I dont need Powershell.

I tried the Windows Weblauncher but this doesnt work on XP Home.

I have succesfully installed and used SQL server on XP Home, but after a crash and a new installation of Windows with all updates, including SP3, I can't get it working anymore,

How can I (1) install SQL Server Express 2008 without this Powershell error by skipping the powershell check or (2) how can I install PowerShell first on my XP Home computer to run a succesful installation afterwards.
