SSMS Project templates

Posted By:      Posted Date: August 28, 2010    Points: 0   Category :Sql Server
I am using SQL2008R2. From SSMS when I try to create a new project three template choices are shown. SQL Server Scripts, Analysis Services Scripts and SQL Server Compact Edition Scripts. Regardless of which one I pick the solution explorer window is empty and there is no apparent way to add anything to it? I suspect the templates are messed up. How can I replace what is there with ones that work? Thanks.Tom

Visual Studio 2005: Create Reusable Project And Item Templates For Your Development Team

Visual Studio 2005 introduces a new model that lets you define your own project templates and starter kits, something developers have been requesting for some time. Here Matt Milner shows you how to consume, create, and customize these templates.

SSMS Project Focus

I have a project that I am building in a DEV environment which will later be used to roll out to production on a different server. whenever I load the project or open one of the items in it it always puts the DEV server as the focus server in the page tab and runs the items on the DEV server instead of the alternate server.  I am only connected to the alternate server and have no connection open to the DEV server. How do I make the project focus on the correct server? Thanks, -Rob Marmion

How to add existing SourceSafe database to SSMS project

I have a several large Visual Sourcesafe (VSS) databases with scripts of all objects of several SQL server databases. They were integrated into VSS using Visual Studio. But the Solution file in VSS can not be opened from SQL Server Management Studio 2008 (SSMS). (Its a .sln file, and I need a .ssmssln file). If I try I get an error saying that the solution file was created with a newer version ...

My question is : How do I create a new SSMS project and connect it to one of the existing VSS databases to make it possible to view/check in/check out all the procedures, functions, tables etc. already stored in VSS from within SSMS.

Writing a VB.NET extensibility project as a SSMS 2008 R2 add-in

I am trying to write an add-in into the SSMS 2008 R2 IDE.  I believe it is possible, though maybe not fully supported by Microsoft.
I have created a new project in Visual Studio 2010 of type Extensibility - Visual Studio Add-in.  This has created my project and all of the relevant code to get the add-in loaded onto the Tools menu.  THe only line of code I have added is inot the OnConnection method to display a messagebox so I know it has at least loaded.

When I build this as is, it will load as an Add-in into VS 2010 onto the Tools menu - which is fine - at least part is working.  But when I try to add this as an Add-in into SSMS 2008 it keeps giving me the error message:
The Add-in 'DataFollower.Connect' failed to load or cause an exception.  Would you like to remove this add-in? ... Error Message: Class not registered  Error number: 80040154
To get this add-in registerd in SSMS I followed the methods found using google searches.  And loaded into the registry :

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Shell\Addins\DataFollower.Connect]

Custom SSIS project template vrs package templates

I have created several custom package templates, but they are a little cumbersome to use because there is no concept of macro substitutions like you have with a standard visual studio project template.  From what I've researched so far, you can create a project template from visual studio's file menu: File->Export Template.  This in theory this launches the project template wizard.  My only problem is that this menu item appears to be disabled for SSIS projects.  Is it possible to create custom project templates for SSIS?  I'm  using BIDS 2008.

Project Templates in VS 2010

I am a beginner in ASP.net world and is a experienced Java developer.

My company is looking to convert the existing legacy applications into .Net. We have many small applications that need to be converted to .Net.

Most of them share the same look and feel with a similar layout, header, footer, admin menu, authentication with Active directory etc.  Rather than every developer going through the same initial steps manually, I would like to standardize and create a base template of the project that everyone can work with. I am also looking into adding the logging framework set up, exception handling (I am thinking of using ELMAH) etc.

I was thinking of using the template option of VS2010 through which I export the template after creating the sample project which then can be used by other developers.

Another option is to create a base project and commit to the Version control which can then be checked out by other developers. They can rename the project and other details.

Any suggestions on which is better ? Or other ideas or options?

Really appreciate your inputs.

WCF RIA Services Project Templates Missing

When I start a new project and select Silverlight as the type of project that I want to create, the WCF RIA Services Templates are not there (Silverlight Business Application, WCF Class Library).  They were there before I installed the Silverlight Developer Toolkit.  I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the RIA Services Tools but to no avail.  I would like to have these templates back.

I'm attempting to install this set of silverlight developer tools for Visual Studio 2010: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=b3deb194-ca86-4fb6-a716-b67c2604a139

In the directories where the VS 2010 templates are stored, the RIA Services templates are not there.

\%Program Files%\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\IDE\ProjectTemplates\CSharp\Silverlight\1033

\%Program Files%\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\IDE\ProjectTemplatesCache\CSharp\Silverlight\1033

Each folder only has:

Visual Studio Project and Item Templates are missing

I am using Windows 7 Professional and I have VS 2008 and 2010 installed in my machine. Project and Item templates are missing in VS 2008 but it is available in VS 2010. only MS .net 4.0 is installed in my machine. I read that, .Net 3.5 would come as an OS component in Windows 7. I tried executing  devenv /installvstemplates in visual studio command prompt. But VS command prompt is not present under VS 2008-> VS Tools. It is present under VS 2010. Also I noticed that only 5 compressed files are in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\ItemTemplates\CSharp\1033 folder. I think, I need rest of the files to see the templates. But I am not sure from where I can get those files. Any help on this would be appreciated.

Thanks In Advance,

Updating Data-Tier Application project after schema change has been made in SSMS

I have successfully created a Data-Tier Application project within visual studio. How do I update these scripts to reflect the changes made by a DBA in SSMS?  Also, on another project we use Entity Framework which drops and recreates the database from within the application. I would also like to import these changes into the Data-Tier Application project.
I can figure out how to import the database into the project the very first time. But after a change has been made using another tool, how do I synchronize the project in visual studio?
When I create a schema comparison that points from database -> project, it correctly analyzes the schema changes. Am I missing how to update the project with these changes?
Thanks, I really would like a solution to this so I can use Data-Tier Applications instead of a third party tool.

Dynamic Data Templates in GridView ASP.NET 3.5

At a high level, Dynamic Data Templates can be seen as a system to very quickly build up a User Interface linked with the relevant data model, immediately enabling you to perform CRUD operations (Create, Read, Update, Delete) on the database using the specified data source. They provide a powerful method for building up these kinds of applications, and I'm going to focus on an overview of what Dynamic Data Templates actually are, and a few ways of customizing them to suit industry needs.

Project Example: ASP.NET MVC + SubSonic Architecture

use of SubSonic to provide the DAL in association with some ASP.NET MVC sites and was waylaid in my original intent to throw up a post summarizing the architecture we're using for the effort. Well I've finally gotten around to it. Recall that in his fake it till you need it post, Dave provided a window on our architecture that I'll build upon here

Missing 'new item templates'

 Hi all,

I am a 'newbie' to VWD and I am slowly working through the Basic Walkthrough Help files, and learning plenty along the way.

However, when I tried to create a new database in the LINQ control walkthrough I found that the option to create a new database is missing, and further investigation has found that many other new item templates are missing.

I am using a brand new machine with Windows 7 Ultimate and have enabled IIS and .NET from Control Panel-Programs-Turn Windows Features On-Off. I used the WPI to install all basic elements eg. IIS Components, SQL Server Express.

The only 'new item templates' I have when I right-click the App_Data Folder and choose 'new item' are:-

ADO.NET Data Service

AJAX Enabled WCF Service

Dynamic Data Field

SQL Server Database

Text File

XML File

Does anyone know where I have gone wrong.

VS2010 Professional .NET 4.0 Remote Debugging ASP Website Project

Trying to remote debug ASP website from VS2010 Pro to Windows Server 2003 machine.  Specifically, trying to debug a Web Service, but breakpoint says, "The breakpoint will not currently be hit. No symbols have been loaded for this document."  This happens for all compiled code though.  I have read this is due to missing PDB files and the work around is to manually copy them, as noted here.  Problem is, I cannot find any PDB files for my project, except referenced libraries, which I can remote debug.

  • web.config has <compilation debug="true">
  • Debugger is attached to wewp.exe process on remote server
  • Installed VS2010 remote debugger from DVD (as I can remote debug referenced libraries)

This is beyond frustrating.  I migrated my code from VS2008 .Net3.5 to VS2010 .Net4.0 to take advantage of the inherent multithreading framework.  Debugging works when using local host and was stable until deployment to test server.

Thanks in advance,

How can I be sure that my entire project is up-to-date and free of errors in VS2010?

Seems like a stupid question, but I will go to Build > Build Solution many many times and the build will succeed many many times, then I will put in a minor syntax error and the build will fail, BUT the build will not fail because of the minor syntax error; it will fail because of an unresolved type that I put in about twenty compiles ago. And then I will fix the minor syntax eror, and the compiler will still complain about the unresolved type. Here is my code:

<%@ Register TagPrefix="FTB" Namespace="FreeTextBoxControls" Assembly="FreeTextBox" %>
  <form runat="server">
  Hello World!!

Pretty simple, really. I go to Buld > Build WebApplication1 and it runs OK. Now, if I put in a minor syntax error, such as substitute "forrrrrrrm" for "form" and then try to Build Solution, it complains not about the misspelled word, but about the FreeTextBox. And then if I correct the misspelled wird, it still complains about the FreeTextBox. Which leads me to believe that Building the Solution does not check absolutely 100% everything that needs to be checked. Is there a more thorough way of compiling a program that I need to use?
