ODBC driver needed for Compact Edition

Posted By:      Posted Date: May 22, 2011    Points: 0   Category :

I have the newest 'Everywhere' Compact Edition installed, and have created a new desktop database using VS 2005 after installing the VS 2005 SP1 Beta, all successfully. I have no need to use the Mobile components and no need to syncronize to a mobile device. I can connect to the database programatically in VB.NET no problem.

Instead, I want to connect to the desktop database using MS Access. So far, I can't connect using the standard (old) SQLServer ODBC driver, and haven't found any new driver, either. Am I just premature and need to be patient? Does anyone know if there's one in the works? Or am I the only one to have thought of it?

Any help would be appreciated.

ODBC Driver for SQL Server Compact Edition

I know that there is no ODBC driver available for SQL Server Compact Edition version 3.5.  Do you plan to add an ODBC driver in future release? If yes, is it high in your priority list?   The scenario why I am looking for an ODBC driver is to connect an MS Access application to a SDF file instead of MDB file.  This will enable me to easily sync the SDF file with SQL server repository using the new Data Sync Services.   Mario Cardinal MVP Solutions Architect

SQL Server to SQL Server Compact Edition Database Copy

I recently switched from XP to Win 7 and am getting an error when using the SQL Server to SQL Server Compact Edition Database Copy wizard from johnnycantcode.com (link). I suspect that the problem is with the configuration of the path for the DQL CE dll. 1) Does anyone know where the configuration is set? It isn't in the GLT.SqlCopy.exe.config file in the local directory. 2) Has anyone got the program to run under Win 7? Thanks marc

Will SQL Server Compact feature an updated and more capable OLEDB driver

Hi, Earlier, we found problems with using SQL CE 3.5 via OLEDB. While some limited functionality was available and data can be accessed via commands and recordset via OLEDB/ADO from, say, Excel or Access, we were unable to access SQL CE directly from other data-driven packages that nominally support OLEDB, most importantly SAS and SPSS. So our question is whether SQL Server Compact will feature an updated and more capable OLEDB driver? Thx and regards, Ralph

OMPM script cannot find ODBC Driver

I'm setting up a local OMPM (Office Migration Planning Manager) application, which requires an SQL Server database. I installed SQL Server Express successfully. When I run the OMPM script to create the database (CreateDB.bat) I get the following error: SQL-DMO Install Required: This operation requires the SQL Server ODBC Driver, version 3.80 or later, which comes with SQL Server 2000, SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server Express. I installed SQL Server Express with this file "SQLEXPR32_x86_ENU.exe" Could it be that the ODBC Driver was not registered correctly during the install of SQL Server Express? Alternatively, where can I find the missing driver? Thanks in advance, Maurice

[OLE/DB provider returned message: [MERANT][ODBC Sybase driver]Distributed transaction enlistment fa

Ok, i have seen tons of articles on the error, but still can't figure it out. This is being executed through nested procedure calls, until it is roughly 3 levels deep, then makes a call to Sybase using dynamic SQL and OPENROWSET. The message that is returned is listed below. Yes, i looked up all I could find on it. The thing I find interesting is I can simply take the dynamic SQL and the openrowset call out and run it in query analyzer just fine. but when I run it through the procedure it generates the errors. Any thoughts?   [OLE/DB provider returned message: [MERANT][ODBC Sybase driver]Distributed transaction enlistment failed.] Server: Msg 7391, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 The operation could not be performed because the OLE DB provider 'MSDASQL' was unable to begin a distributed transaction. Bug in ODBC SQL Server driver (SQLFetch hangs)

I have come across a bug in the ODBC driver for SQL Server when working against SQL Server 2008 64-bit with TDE where tables contain text-datatypes. We concluded that it is a bug after testing a simple SQL query using Microsoft ODBC test tool (odbcte.exe) and the workaround for us was to start using the "SQL Native Client 10" instead. However I would like to share this information if someone else come across this problem. Below I will describe the problem in more detail. The table has three columns with text datatypes and we use a simple select query against this table to return about 10 rows of data but SQLFetch hangs before all data is returned. It is unfortunately very difficult to reproduce the errror since even a very small change will change the behaviour. If we for example add or remove a column to the select statement then the problem will dissappear, if we call SQLBindCol before instead of after SQLExecute (or the other way around) the problem will dissapear, if we change the WHERE-clause to fetch a different set of rows the problems will dissapear. We have seen the problem though with a number of different SQL queries so it is reproducable.

Server: MSg 17, Level 16, State 1 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]SQL Server does not e

Hi All, When we try to connect to a sql server 2000 using SQL server authentication, we are facing the below mentioned error msg. "Server: MSg 17, Level 16, State 1 [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][DBNETLIB]SQL Server does not exist or access denied" But, once we connect to server using Windows NT login from the client machine, i.e., execute the below command in the run prompt and provide the credentials for windows login, we are able to connect to the server using sql server authentication(user name: sa) \\server_ipaddress\c$ When we went though some of the msdn links, found that windows firewall was the major cause. But, in the server 1. Windows Firewall is turned off 2. TCP/IP and NamedPipes are enabled 3. Default Port Number is 1433 Any user, who wants to connect to the SQL Server using SSMS, first have to perform a Windows NT login and then connect using SQL authentication.  Due to the above error, the DTS packages which are executing in a different server are getting failed. NOTE: Even after connecting to the server using Remote Desktop connection in a local machine, SQL authentication fails. Its manadatory to run the command \\server_ipaddress\c$ in each of the local machine. Any suggestion to resolve the above error is very much appreciated.   Thanks in advance, Raksha Hegde

Cannot select 'SQL Server Compact Edition' from Server Type drop down

I have seen this issue addressed for SQL Server 2005 but not 2008. I have installed these components:SQL Server 2008 (Browser, Management Objects, Native Client, Policies and Setup Support Files)SQL Server Compact 3.5 (for Devies, Server Tools and SP1)In the SQL Server Management Studio, on the Connect to Server dialog, the "Server Type" drop down list is disabled and "Database engine" is the default. Does anyone know what I need to do to make "SQL Server Compact Edition" a choice in the "Server Type" drop down list?

Can a row on a "SQL Server Compact Edition 3.5" have more than 8000B in size ?

Hello, I am trying to use SQL Server Compact Edition 3.5 for a desktop PC application. I need to have a table with 5 columns. One of this columns will contain a data that can grow up to 1MB in size. I have read in wikipedia specifications that the maximum row size, this engine is capable to handle, is of 8000B. However, when designing the table, I can choose "image" type. So, can a row on that table have more than 8000B in size? Is there a maximmum limit ? Cheers Valentin

SQL server 2008 compact editioin + Entity Framework: Can we backup the SQL server compact edition da

our application uses the SQL server 2008 compact edition and entity framework. The application will control the instrument. It may run for several days before it stops. In order to protect the database crash (database failure), we plan to backup SQL compact database during running. Can we backup or duplicate the ~.sdf when application is running? Is there any SQL server command we can call inside the application to achive the backup? Or we only can backup the database when application is not running. thx!

Windows 7 RC ODBC Access driver

Many apologies for posting here, but it's the nearset I can find. I am running the Windows 7 RC (x64) and need the MS Access 32-bit ODBC driver in order to connect to an in-house application. The driver doesn't appear to be shipped with Windows 7 and I cannot find anywhere to download it.On further inspection, the 32-bit SQL Server ODBC driver appears not to ship either and I need that as well.
