MSSQL 2008 R2: Change Server Collation Steps, with user DBs already of desired collation

On the default instance of SQL Server 2008 R2, I want to change the server collation from the usual US default SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS to an application vendor's required collation, Latin1_General_BIN.  I understand that changing the server collation is essentially the same as changing the collation of databases master and model -- is that a fair statement? But my main question is, since there are user databases on the server that I would like to preserve, can I not simply detatch the user DBs prior to performing the server collation change, and then reattach?  The database collation of the user databases is already set to Latin1_General_BIN.  This article, Setting and Changing the Server Collation, at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms179254.aspx says that to preserve the user databases, I should script all DB objects out, and bulk-copy all data out, because the DBs will have to be recreated and repopulated.  Can someone explain why I ought not simply detach and reattach the user DBs, given that they are already of the desired collation (i.e., the same collation that I will be changing the server collation to)? Your help much appreciated. -Tom

how to make working WPF 2010 program make changes to SQL Server 2008 Express files

(1) I have a working WPF 2010 program that manipulates a table in SQL Server 2008 Express (2) the program does delete, update, select and insert correctly however in its own project file folder logbooklmk.mdf   logbooklmk_log.ldf (3) I want the actual SQL Server 2008 express files to be changed yes I know the issue is sharing and the copy option only applies to the local project files. I found this out by trying always copy, never copy and copy if newer. I probably have to change the .xsd folder to refer to the actual SQL Server 2008 Express file. Tried that once and it failed. Something about sharing not allowed.

Easy install package vs MsSQL server 2008

Is there anything i wont be able to do if i use SQL Server Express Database from the downlod install package offered on asp.net? Ive used MSSQL server 2008 and 2005, but to be honest i think it might be overkill cause im not very familiar with those applications. I just need the database for creating websites. Will i be able to remote connect to my webbhotel host and remotely modify the database on the remote server? Now i have a mess, i have installed both MsSQL 2005 and 2008 and im not even sure wich database is created with what. I would love to just have one simple setup, but im not sure if i can manage to migrate the databases to the new computer with this easy install package. The easy install package contains: ASP.NET and ASP.NET MVC Visual Studio 2010 Express Development Tool SQL Server Express DatabaseThanks for your time!

Copy files through batch program on Windows Server 2003

I have a VB6 program running on windows server 2003. When I try to open a file in a SharePoint Document library it will not traverse folders. If I run the application on Windows 7 (maybe Vista too), it can. I assume that there is some operating system helping hand here. In order to get around this problem, we have to output our files to a network share and then copy the files over to the document library manually. My question is, how can I write a batch program that will copy all of the files on a network share to the document library using the individual's credentials? I am unable to map a drive letter to a document library in Windows server 2003 (it works on 7). Any suggestions and tips would be much appreciated. Thanks.

MSSQL Server 2008 Workgroups install to Win 7 - Compatibility issues

I attempted to install MSSQL Server 2008 Workgroups from the DVD to a Win 7 workstation.  Error "This Program has known compatibility issues.  The directions are to download the MSSQL Server Service Pack.  I downloaded SP 1 and SP 2.  Neither SP will install.  The DVD install also has a run option displayed along with the Compatibility message.  I select "Run" and it appeared to install, with Start\Programs\Microsoft SQL Server 2008\Configuration Tools\ SQL Server Installation Center 64bit.  However, running the 64bit installation process results in no change.  My question is how to install the MSSQL Server 2008 Workgroups on the Win 7 machine.  I would appreciate your thoughts.

I have MSSQLSERVER (Running - \\D1XFZ9C1\SQLEXPRESS-MSSQL Server) running. Under my Programs I have MicroSoft SQL Server 2005 but the only items listed are Configuration Tools. Am I missing something? I am trying to run a CREATE DATABASE query in order to create a database for PRO WPF using VB 2008 (Visual Studio 2008) but I don't know where to run it. Can anyone please help as I am new to this.

MSSQL Server 2008 Workgroups install to Win 7 - Compatibility issues

The DVD install for MSSQL Server 2008 Workgroups to Win 7 fails due to known compatibility issues.  I asked for help in the Getting Started with SQL Server Forum and followed a recommendation to slipstream installation with SP1. I followed the procedures at http://blogs.msdn.com/b/joaol/archive/2009/03/20/how-to-install-sql-server-2008-with-sp1-built-in-slipstream-installation.aspx I then ran Setup.exe from the C:\SQLServer2008 folder.  It failed with the following .Net Framework error.  (I previously installed .Net Framework Version 4 which is required by the application needing SQL Server.)  Thanks for help. Microsoft.NET Framework Unhandled exception has occurred in your application.  If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue.  If you click Quit, the application will close immediately. An error occurred creating the configuration section handler for userSettings/Microsoft.SqlServer.Configuration.LandingPage.Properties.Settings: Could not load file or assembly 'System. Sorry if this is in the wrong place, but I just had a question regarding MSSQL server installation f

Hello folks,

I have been recently discussing with a group of blind individuals the best way for us to be able to install the Express versions of SQLServer 2008 with ease, and best of all, success.  I was wondering if deep on this site or another, there was an ISO image I could possibly grab since I find the online installation center very confusing and also very unfriendly to those like me who must rely on screen readers in order to do their everyday computing tasks.  Any input on this is greatly appreciated.  I am blind myself, and due to a failed installation, and ultimately frustrating experience with this, I now have a desktop workstation at home that has been corrupted with left over remnants of SQLServer 2008 Express R2.  What is my best way at fixing this, and ultimately being able to install it so that I can now continue with my experimentation as planned?  Thanks.

Calling Procedure from ADO.NET with a Name That Starts with Sys Causes SQL Server Stack Dump

After the better part of 5 hours, I finally figured out why I was getting this SqlException:  {"A severe error occurred on the current command.  The results, if any, should be discarded.\r\nA severe error occurred on the current command.  The results, if any, should be discarded."}

If you call a stored procedure that *starts* with Sys (e.g. dbo.SystemConfigurationUpdate, dbo.SystolicPatientRecords, or SyscoFoodsPurchase) and at least one specified variable is a Table Value Parameter, SQL Server 2008 stack dumps (below).

If you add anything to the front of the Sys, it works fine (e.g. mSysConfigUpdate or mSys).

CLR Integration With Microsoft SQL Server

Transact-SQL provides as much flexibility as possible but, because it is not a real programming language, it has some shortcomings about many issues (memory management, exception handling, debugging, file processing (or streaming), object-orientation (classes), or thread management). Transact-SQL also lacks features of normal libraries (arrays, collections, serialization, expressions, or string manipulations, etc).

User Defined Functions in Microsoft SQL Server

User Defined Functions are compact pieces of Transact SQL code, which can accept parameters, and return either a value, or a table. They are saved as individual work units, and are created using standard SQL commands. Data transformation and reference value retrieval are common uses for functions. LEFT, the built in function for getting the left part of a string, and GETDATE, used for obtaining the current date and time, are two examples of function use. User Defined Functions enable the developer or DBA to create functions of their own, and save them inside SQL Server.

dynamically adding sql server columns based on number of files in fileuploader

I want to create a new table to sql database at runtime.  The column names would be "Name", "Date", "Event".  I would also like to have one more column name "Image" but the problem is that since the amount of images will vary, I want the application to count the amount of files in the Multiple fileuploader and then add a image column to the table for the respected amount of files.

For example if i am uploading 3 files in the multiple fileuploader, the names should be "Name", "Date", "Event", "Image1", "image2", Image3"

I also would like that table name to be name dynamically from the textbox Name when the user enters the information.

I have the following code to make a new table, but I dont know how to name the fields at runtime like previously asked please help!!!

Dim objConn As New SqlConnection("Server=<servername>;uid=<userid>;pwd=<password>;database=master")
