I've been going through a lot of documentation trying to figure out the options for taking SQL Server Backups provided to application vendors, specifically where VDI and VSS (Volume Shadow Services) are concerned. Unfortunately the various resources I've
been looking at seem to use some terms interchangeably or contradict themselves.
Here's what I think I know, please correct me if I'm wrong.
- VDI, provided as a separate resource, and not part of windows SDK
- SNAPSHOTS, used with VDI (but possibly use VSS in the backend?)
- VSS (used with SQL Writer, included in Windows SDK as of windows vista/Server 2003, otherwise downloaded as VSS SDK version 7.2
My biggest concern is using VDI with VSS. Although the online help that comes with the V_Backup package mentions that VSS snapshots are the "preferred way" of doing backups (indicating that VSS is not at all part of the VDI equation), however in this
