SQL, SAN and Hyper V

Posted By:      Posted Date: May 22, 2011    Points: 0   Category :

Sorry if this is not the best part of the sql server forums to ask this question, seemed to fit the best.

In the process of looking into reducing the number of physical servers we have along with introducing a SAN to store the VM files. One thing I can't seem to find is a great deal of agreement over is best practice when running SQL as Hyper V guest.

If I was setting up a single physical server for SQL I would have a RAID 1 for the O/S,  RAID 1 for logs and RAID10 for the Database, is it recommended to have the same on a SAN. In other words create the 3 RAID arrays on the SAN and pass these through as 3 seperate disks to the hyper V host, and then create my 3 seperate VHD files on these drives.

Make It Snappy: Juice Up Your App with the Power of Hyper-Threading

In this article, the author explores the hyper-threading technology found on newer Intel Pentium 4 processors and demonstrates how adding parallelism to your code can improve performance on hyper-threaded machines. He covers advanced optimizations for hyper-threading and shows a number of useful patterns. Code samples are in C#, but you can apply the same principles in other languages as they apply to both managed and unmanaged applications.

Hyper-links from Outlook

I looked the other topic and it doesn't answer my problem.

When I receive an email with hyper-links in them they seldom connect and only if the full link is available can I copy & paste it into my browser. Soemtimes there is just a comment with the link behind it and it's impossible to pick up the full link details. A box appears saying that Outlook is blocking this action and I should refer to my administrator.

I am the administrator and have too little knolwedge to know what I would need to do do to create the bock so please help to sort out this annoying and time consuming issue.

Many thanks...

Is there any article or webcast for how to set up a SQL Server Clustering in Hyper-V environment?

I have already set up a Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise x64 with Hyper-V installed for trying out different features in SQL Server.  I'm interesting in trying out SQL Server Clustering.  I have only set up Windows 7 Enterprise x64, Windows 7 Pro x64,  and Windows XP PRO SP2 x86 VMs.  Can I use this VMs for SQL Server 2005 or 2008 Clustering?  Is there any article or webcast for how to set up a SQL Server Clustering in Hyper-V environment?

Specs for a small Sharepoint 2010 farm on a Hyper V virtual server

I want to build a small Sharepoint Farm on a hyper v Windows Server 2008 R2 OS.

I want to have the following instances. An App server (with indexing and query) and an SQL server.

I need to scope out a server which will accommodate this development environment and ultimately scale out to include additional virtual instances.

What would the minimum memory and CPU requirements be?

Moving Sharepoint 2007 from Virtual Server 2005 to Hyper-V

I'm a little unsure of the exact sequence to move my Sharepoint 2007 Virtual server from VS2005 to Hyper-V.  In my enviroment, my sharepoint machine and SQL machine are on 2 different boxes.  SQL 2005 is on Hyper-V and Sharepoint is on Virtual Server 2005.  Do I shutdown the SQL VM before I move Sharepoint???   Will the new VM and SQL sync back up without any help??

Also, what happens to the SQL database if the new Sharepoint VM (on Hyper-V) has issues or problems??  Does that make my SQL server

out of sync with my old Sharepoint VM???  I have done multiple moves between VS2005 and Hyper-V so I really familiar with the process.

I usually keep the old VM around for a while after moving just in case there is a problem.   I can always blow away the new VM and crank up the old.   Viola!  I'm back to square one.

Any ideas??

Thanks,

Brian

Hyper-V R2 VHD Growth with Sharepoint 2010

I'm having some trouble with my Sharepoint 2010 Hyper-V VHD. It continues to grow and grow until the host server runs out of disk space. Once the server is rebooted, the space recycles and doesn't grow for some time, but it always starts to grow again and fills up the host. Some info on my environment:

The Sharepoint 2010 VHD is set to dynamically grow, and the max size is 1TB. (I have set all my VHDs to this size, and haven't had this problem with any other virtual server.) I set it to this size so that even if the physical hardware runs out of space, the virtual server won't.

It's currently running on a server that has 250GB hard drives. While I know this is significantly smaller than the 1TB VHD, some of our hardware has larger hard drives, and virts tend to get migrated around as need be.

All databases have been set to simple, and none of them are expanding at a rate that would cause this issue.

Like I said above, we run mostly everything in virts, and all of the virts are setup the same way, dynamically expanding with 1TB VHDs. NONE of them act this way. My question is, what is filling up my VHD? Is it Sharepoint doing something or is it something else?

Thanks. -Jim

SQLIO stats on Hyper-V host

I've been using sqlio.exe to benchmark a new ssd drive and I get much higher results running it in a Hyper-V VM compared to the physical host, much higher.

For example, on the raw host I get 2000 IOPS, on the VM I get 5000 etc.

When I compare the physical disk stats in perfmon when the test is running it appears that the VM is writing at a rate of about 250MB/sec, while the host is only writing about 60MB/sec.

I'm using a 20GB datafile in the test to ensure nothing gets cached in memory etc and I know its writing to disk based on the host's perfmon counters.

Any ideas why I'm getting artificially high results in the VM?

*red hyper links*

I have been attempting to create a a workflow in Sharepoint Designer 2007 (WSS 3.0) and everytime I try to add a to do action to any condition I receive a *example* in red. I have tried a number of to do titles, but they all seem to give me the error.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,
