Adding named instance of SQL Server 2005 failed - "Error Locating Server/Instance Specified"

We are trying to add a named instance to our Windows 2003 R2 x64 SP1/SQL Server 2005 SP3 server.  It has been running for about 3 years now with a single (default) instance.  When trying to add a named instance, it fails when it gets to the point where it is Updating System Databases - "SQL Server Setup could not connect to the database service for server configuration.  The error was:[Microsoft][SQL Native Client]SQL Network Interfaces: Error Locating Server/Instance Specified [xFFFFFFFF]. Refer to server error logs..."  We are using the local service account for both the default and new named instance.  Allow Remote Connections to This Server is enabled on the default instance.

In Services, the new SQL Server service has started, but I cannot start the SQL Server Agent - it says it started and then stopped.  I cannot access the instance with SMS.  I rebooted the server and tried the process again with identical results.  I have successfully added a new instance to my test SQL Server using the same install files. Can anyone shed some light in this issue?  Thanks.

SQL error code 0x1C2074D8@1216@1 on 2nd instance installation

Hello.

I've installed a SQL 2008 R2 failover cluster on Windows 2008.  Default instance installed and failover nodes are running just fine.  However, when I try to install a second SQL instance (named MSSQLSERVER1) using different cluster drives than the first instance I get this error.

The new sql cluster computer account is in AD already.  I'm using the same sql service account for both instances (however, I got the same error using a differnt account as well).  I left the default Use service SIDs (recommended) checked.

On the Properties page for the Server in the SQL Server cluster resource in Failover Cluster Management on the General tab I see Kerberos Status: Access is denied.

I would appreciate any help on this.

Thank you.

Installing SQL Server 2008 R2 on a Windows Server 2008 R2 generates the same error every time ( "SQL Server 2008R2\Resouces\1033\Setup.rll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error tryinstalling the program again using the original installation media." Then when I click on OK (From the error box) I get the following message: SQL Server MEdia does not support the language of the OS or doewn't have an ENU lcalized files. Use the matching language specific SQL. I am using a full version of both Windows Server and SQL Server.

named instance sql server 2008 install on cluster

I have a production two-node cluster with sql server 2008 sp1 cu7 running over windows server 2008 sp2. If I were to install a new named instance on this live environment, would it impair the default sql server instance functionality? I'm not referring to processor/io while the install is in progress. My question specifically is would the install process by its nature bring down the default instance. I'm pretty sure it won't, but don't see any documentation that would confirm this. thanks.

Today I installed a named instance on a SQL 2005 Standard X64 SP3 server running on Windows 2008 R2. From a remote server with SQL Server Management Studio I can connect to the default instance, but when I try to connect to the named instance it returns Cannot connect to <server>\<instance> A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while established a connection to SQL Server.
