VS 2010 forcing Shared Memory

Posted By:      Posted Date: May 22, 2011    Points: 0   Category :

I have just installed VS 2010 Pro and I already have SQL Server 2008 all on Windows 7 Pro.  My db instance is set up for remote connections and I have enabled both Named Pipes and TCP/IP.  I've opened my firewall to 1433 and UDP 1434 for SQL Browser.  From VS 2010, in Server Explorer I'm able to connect to my instance and a database just fine however when I try to add a new SQL item to my project in Solution Explorer it throws the error:

A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server.  The server was not found or was not accessible.  Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configure to allow remote connections.  (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error:40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)

Why is it forcing the connection through Shared Memory?  But also, why am I able to make a connection just fine elsewhere?

Thanks for any assistance,

how to choose between Shared Memory, Named Pipes, TCP/IP, VIA?

What protocol to choose? Or, Why are they so many? I am mostly interested in contexts: 1)  development on local machine 2) development from remote machine (having SQL Server on another machine)  3) Production 4) what else should I bother/know about? I am developer, mostly using Developer Ed. mostly locally on Windows XP Pro SP3, and really had never bothered which protocol was used as far as connection was being successful. And I had never had any troubles to bother looking and choosing between protocols Why and when should I bother to choose between protocols for development?

Hello,Please bear with me as I am no Sql Server guru, but am getting this error that is preventing me from continuing with my development work.  I am the only developer on my team running Sql Server 2005 and it has been working just fine for the last week.  I opened the Management Studio this morning, just like every other morning and got this error:TITLE: Connect to Server------------------------------ Cannot connect to (local). ------------------------------ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: A connection was successfully established with the server, but then an error occurred during the login process. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 233) Of course the help page says no help is available.  I have googled myself sick and still have not found a way so resolve this...has anyone else had this error and/or a fix?  I am using XP Pro SP2...any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!Steph

VS 2010 memory leak?

It happens frequently when I try to copy & paste code inside VS 2010 with following message:

insufficient available memory to meet the expected demands of an operation at this time, possibly due to virtual address space fragmentation. Please try later.

and I check the memory usage with taskmanager on my computer. It is fine.

In order fix it, I need to close VS 2010 and restart again.

So is it a memory leak or can be fixed in some way?

SharePoint 2010 Documents inside Document set is no inheriting shared fields (lookup fields)

I have a situation that is making me crazy !! I have a content type that inherits from Document set. I have set some fields (metadata) in the document set and configured the document set to share it with documents inside it.

All the fields are being shared (inherited) to the documents inside the document set except for the lookup fields

I have 2 lookup fields that looks for information from a SharePoint list.

I'm using SharePoint 2010.

Thanks ..

[Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 10.0]Shared Memory Provider: Timeout error [258]

Hello All,

I am using MS SQL SERVER 2008. Im making an application which queries trillion of records. Im using PHP as scripting language. For those functions , which query database and 200 (approximately) rows of DB are returned, everything works fine. But if I query database and a large recordset should be returned, the following error is thrown:

Array ( [0] => Array ( [0] => 08S01 [SQLSTATE] => 08S01 [1] => 258

=> 258 [2] => [Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 10.0]Shared Memory Provider: Timeout error [258]. [message] => [Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 10.0]Shared Memory Provider: Timeout error [258]. ) [1] => Array ( [0] => 08S01 [SQLSTATE] => 08S01 [1] => 258

If I see the error log it shows:

running SharePoint 2010 and on the server w3wp.exe is consuming huge amounts of CPU and Memory bring

I'm running Server 2008 (64bit) with 8Gig of RAM and 4 processors.  We haven't had more than four people in Sharepoint at the same time and performance has been extremely poor (had moments where things run ok but it usually doesn't last for more than a few minutes).  We're not even doing anything advanced.  Just a very small document repository with basic searching.

When I log into the server I can see several w3wp.exe processes running and will spike up to 100% of the CPU.  Memory will be around 100-800 Mb for each process.

Any ideas on how to speed up SharePoint 2010 performance?  Our SharePoint 2003 box runs MUCH faster and has 100+ users and over 3000 documents???

Visual Studio 2010 Hangs in Designer, Memory Usage Grows

After switching to the web designer, VS2010 sometimes hangs. If I look at the Resource Monitor, I see that devenv.exe is consuming 50% of the CPU (on a dual-core machine), and its memory usage keeps slowly growing. Since VS is unresponsive, I end up killing the devenv process and restarting VS.

The problem occurs about 1-3 times a day. I have not found a way to specifically reproduce the problem, but it appears to happen most on complex web pages that include UserControls. All pages in this project also use Master pages, if that helps.

Since upgrading from VS2008 to VS2010, I've noticed a number of odd problems. This one actually forces me to kill the devenv process and restart VS2010, and so is particularly disruptive. I did not have any similar problems under VS2008.

Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, under Parallels Desktop 5, running under Mac OS X 10.6.5

Visual Studio 2010 Pro, version 10.0.30319.1 RTMRel

3 GB RAM allocated to the Windows virtual machine.

I'm not running any add-ins or other unusual software. Any suggestions?

(I have an annotated screen shot if it will help)

VS 2010 - Attempted to read or write protected memory

Hi, My website used to run perfectly with out any error.

All of a sudden now when I am running under VS2010 it gives the below error

Collaboration on Word 2010 files that are saved in a Sharepoint 2010 Shared Document Library.

We have installed Sharepoint 2010 and Office Web Apps on a 64-bit Windows 2008 server. Excel 2010 files can be collaborated among different users (i.e. user status bar is showing the number of users accessing the Excel file) when the file is edited using Edit in Browser option. However, we cannot get Word/PowerPoint 2010 files to collaborate in the same manner (i.e. no user status bar).

Does the collaboration feature work for Word/Powerpoint 2010 using Office Web Apps or it is available for Excel/OneNote 2010 only?

If collaboration is also available for Word/PowerPoint 2010 using Office Web Apps, any ideas why Excel 2010 works for us and not Word/PowerPoint?

Thank you in advance for your help and clarification.

Distributed shared memory and sql server?

Not sure this is the right forum but, I'll give it a shot anyway;

Recently I've been into discusions about distributed shared memory to hold a synchronised copy of database in memory in order to remove load from dB.

There're a lot of opensource / solution about this mainly for the linux world as I can see it. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distributed_shared_memory)

Just curious to know what the microsoft approch to this architecture is.

ASP.NET, HTML, JavaScript Snippet Support (VS 2010 and .NET 4.0 Series)

This post covers another useful improvement in VS 2010 - HTML/ASP.NET/JavaScript snippet support. Snippets allow you to be more productive within source view by allowing you to create chunks of code and markup that you can quickly apply and use in your application with a minimum of character typing.

Visual Studio has supported the concept of "snippets" for VB and C# in previous releases - but not for HTML, ASP.NET markup and JavaScript. With VS 2010 we now support snippets for these content types as well.

Clean Web.Config Files (VS 2010 and .NET 4.0 Series)

.NET 4 includes a new version of the CLR, and a new .NET 4 specific machine.config file (which is installed side-by-side with the one used by .NET 2, .NET 3 and .NET 3.5).

The new .NET 4 machine.config file now automatically registers all of the ASP.NET tag sections, handlers and modules that we've added over the years, including the functionality for:

.ASP.NET Dynamic Data
.ASP.NET Routing (which can now be used for both ASP.NET WebForms and ASP.NET MVC)
.ASP.NET Chart Control (which now ships built-into ASP.NET V4)
What this means is that when you create a new "Empty ASP.NET application" project in VS 2010, you'll find that the new default application-level web.config file is now clean and simple:

Architecture Tools in VSTS 2010

Designing new functionality on existing applications can be daunting. There are always differences between the original design and the current implementation.

The new Architecture tools within Visual Studio Team System 2010 help you understand the application you have, design new functionality you need, and validate that your design and your implementation do not deviate.

VB and C# enhancements in VS 2010

In Visual Studio 2010, we've made several enhancements to our two most popular languages, Visual Basic and C#, to give programmers all the tools they need to build great software no matter which language they prefer.

The Visual Basic team focused on adding productivity features to the language so developers can get more done in fewer lines of code. The most common customer request for Visual Basic is to remove the underscore ("_") character when breaking a code statement across multiple lines in most cases. Visual Basic 10 introduces implicit line continuation, which removes the need for the underscore character in most cases.

Code Optimized Web Development Profile (VS 2010 and .NET 4.0 Series)

When you first run VS 2010 it prompts you to select an IDE profile to use. The profile you select will configure how tool windows are displayed/docked in the IDE by default and set the default keyboard shortcuts. You can then customize any of these settings by using the Tools->Options menu within the IDE and then override/change them. You can also later reset your profile and pick a different one by choosing the Tools->Import and Export Settings menu command.

VS 2010 and .NET 4 Series

VS 2010 and .NET 4 are the next major releases of our developer tools and framework. Together they contain a ton of new functionality and improvements that I think you'll really like, and which make building applications of all types easier, faster and better. The improvements range from nice small tweaks to major, major enhancements - and can be found across the .NET Framework, the languages, and the IDE.
