SQL Server 2008 Express (Registry Error)

Posted By:      Posted Date: May 22, 2011    Points: 0   Category :

I'm trying to install SQL Server 2008 Express on my Windows XP Pro machine and I've already been through the loops of having .net 3.5 (and ended up needing .net 3.5 SP1 Beta). Now my last, and hopefully final, issue is to fix the following error:

When I begin my install SQL 2008 runs "Setup Support Rules" and I fail on the last step which is labelel 'Consistency validation for SQL Server registry keys'.

"Rule 'Consistency validation for SQL Server registry keys' failed". The SQL Server registry keys from a prior installation cannot be modified. To continue, see SQL Server Setup documentation about how to fix registry keys.

1.) I can't find the documentation

2.) How do I fix this?

Note: I did have SQL 2005 Express installed which I uninstalled prior to my attempt of installing SQL 2008 Express

Thanks,

James

Error when running an SQL script to restore a database on SQL Server 2008 R2 Express

Hi, At work, I use SQL Server 2008 Express running on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3. At home, I also use SQL Server 2008 Express running on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3. Whenever I do work on the database at work, I usually restore the database at home (or vice versa) I have been using the following SQL scripts to back up the database and to restore the same database (at work or at home). BackupRealEstate.sql USE Master BACKUP DATABASE [RealEstate] TO DISK = N'F:\My Documents\My Database\RealEstate.bak' WITH NOFORMAT, INIT, NAME = N'RealEstate-Full Database Backup', SKIP, NOREWIND, NOUNLOAD, STATS = 10 GO RestoreRealEstate.sql USE Master RESTORE DATABASE [RealEstate] FROM DISK = N'F:\My Documents\My Database\RealEstate.bak' WITH  FILE = 1, NOUNLOAD, REPLACE, STATS = 10 GO Everything worked fine until I replaced my 8yo home computer with a newer and faster one. My new home computer is running Windows 7 Home Premium and I use the latest SQL Server 2008 R2 Express. When I tried to run the above restore SQL script, I got the following error message: Msg 3101, Level 16, State 1, Line 2 Exclusive access could not be obtained because the database is in use. Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 2 RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally. There was no other application/process using this database. Can someone please help me? Regards,

Error Installing SQL Server 2008 Express: '' is not a valid login or you do not have permission

I have tried installing SQL Server 2008 multiple times on my machine, and I always receive this error about 3/4 of the way through: '' is not a valid login or you do not have permission.

I have tried installing both SQL Server 2008 Express with Tools and SQL Server 2008 with Advanced Services, and they both fail the same way. I am trying to do a new stand-alone installation.

I'm running Windows XP Home Edition SP3.

Looking into the error, some forums say I have to install it from THE Administrator account, and not an account with administrator permissions; it also cannot be in Safe Mode, because then the Windows Installer won't work. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to login to the Administrator account. I can go to the home login screen, do ctrl+alt+del twice, and attempt to login to the Administrator account, but I receive this error: Unable to Log You on because of an Account Restriction.

Other forums say that in the Server Configuration section, all you have to do is provide the username and a strong password from an administrative account on the computer, and it doesn't have to be THE Administrator. Well, I did that, but for some reason it doesn't recognize my username and passw

SQL Server Express 2008 Reporting Services - rsAccessDenied error

I've read through a lot of posts regarding the problem, but none of the proposed solutions have worked for me. I continue to get an error stating, "The permissions granted to user '<servername>\Rich' are insufficient for performing this operation. (rsAccessDenied)." If I am logged in as the local administrator account, entering the Reporting Services URL in IE doesn't give me that error, but it takes me to a blank page. I haven't been able to get to a SSRS home page at all.

Order of operations:

  1. I installed and patched Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
  2. I installed SQL Server Express 2008 with Advanced Services using the MS web installer.
  3. I downloaded and installed SP1 for SQL Server Express 2008.
  4. Opened up an instance of IE and tried to go to http://<servername>/Reports, receiving the above error. Well, technically I first tried /ReportServer_SQLExpress as reflected in the SSRS configuration manager, but that didn't work, either. I then changed the Web Service URL to use the virtual directory, "Reports" instead of the longer ReportServer_SQLExpress. It didn't work either way.

I've tried running IE as administrator, adding local machine to trusted sites, and just about every other suggestion I've found. I even ran the entire installation logged in as the loc

SQL Server 2008 R2 Express - Protected Memory error

Am trying to install SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Database with Advanced Services 64-bit on Win7 Enterprise N 64-bit standalone.

Had previously installed SQL 2005 Express with tools, but that has been completely uninstalled and computer restarted.

Have Msoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile plus Msoft SQL Server native Client currently installed.

Chose download from here (http://www.microsoft.com/express/Database/InstallOptions.aspx) and everything seemed to be running smoothly until during New Installation phase of SQL Server Installation Center, setup encountered "Attempted to read or write protected memory...Error code 0x84B10001."

Have been searching for solutions, but most are dated back in 2007-2009, and I'm hoping (!) there are some later solutions available. What are my options?

Thanks in advance!           ~chornung

Server 2008 R2 -> Failed to decrypt using provider 'RsaProtectedConfigurationProvider'. Error mess

So I am using the aspnet_regiis.exe tool to encrypt sections of the web.config in my asp.net applications and services.  I have done this for years successfully on Windows Server 2003 (IIS 6).  However I just moved some apps over to Windows Server 2008 R2 (with IIS 7.5) and I am now receiving the following error at runtime:

"Server was unable to process request. ---> Failed to decrypt using provider 'RsaProtectedConfigurationProvider'. Error message from the provider: Bad Data."

Now I am quite familiar with this process and am stumped at what I have missed this time around.  I have done ALL of the following which typically suffices for the process on the server. PLEASE READ ALL AND DO NOT PROVIDE RESPONSES OR LINKS FOR THINGS I HAVE ALREADY DONE Thanks!!  Wink

  1. Imported the keys to the server using aspnet_regiis -pi  Result: Success
  2. Given FULL permission (using -full switch) using aspnet_regiis -pa to ALL of the following accounts  Result: Success
