SQL Server 2008 R2 Group Logins as Sysadmin

Posted By:      Posted Date: May 22, 2011    Points: 0   Category :

I have a new SQL 2008 R2 Standard installed on Win 2008 R2 in mixed authentication mode.  I can add my domain account as a Login with sysadmin permissions and connect via SSMS both locally when ran with admin and remotely from an XP workstation.

However, if I attempt to add a domain or local group, of which I am a member, to the login, grant that login/group sysadmin privledges, I am unable to login after removing my dedicated account.  I have read a number of posts that refer to elevating SSMS, etc but that is not the case with my issue as I am doing that and also attempting login from XP.

My exact error messages are:

Login failed for user 'xxxx\yyyyy'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors. [CLIENT:]

Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 11.
Seems silly to add each administrator directly and not be able to use an AD Group.

Error 15401 when adding AD logins in upper case to a sql 2008 server

We are repeatedly getting Error 15401 when adding couple AD logins in upper case(DOMAIN_NM\USR_NM) to a sql 2008 server with the latin1_general, binary sort collation.  Lower case (DOMAIN_NM\usr_nm) works fine.  All the other servers, even the ones with the same collation, it is the opposite, upper case works and not the lower case.  Looked for duplicate SIDs in the domain, on the sql server, did not find any.  Any idea what's going on?.

SQL Server 2008: When creating database with filestream group pc hangs

I am facing this STRANGE problem with sql server 2008. When I try to create a new database with filestream group my system hangs. When I restart pc by direct power off and then on, I cannot see the new database but at the given location I could see that database files and filestream group has been created.

Solutions Tried.
Uninstall, download new version then reinstall but to no use.
Set maximum permissions to current user (according to my knowledge).
Using Mix mode authentication.

PC configuraion:
XP Home Edition SP2,
Intel Dual Core 2.0 GHZ Processor
4GB Ram,
SQL Server express SP1 installed on NTFS Partition
Plenty of Disk Space
Comodo Firewall pro, Avast Antivirus ( Already tried to stop firewall and antivirus still no use)

Any help would be appreciated.

Are nested Windows groups supported as SQL Server 2008 logins?

I am attempting to configure a new SQL Server 2008 instance to use Windows authentication, and am encountering a problem when adding Windows domain groups as logins. Specifically, Windows users who are direct members of a Windows group that has been added as a login behave normally. Users who are members of groups that are, in turn, members of other groups which have been added as logins are unable to connect.

In a simplified example, consider the following:

Group: MYDOMAIN\DataViewers
  Member: MYDOMAIN\Hazel
  Member: MYDOMAIN\Seamus

Group: MYDOMAIN\DataEditors
  Member: MYDOMAIN\Vaughan
  Member: MYDOMAIN\Liesel

Group: MYDOMAIN\AllUsers
  Member: MYDOMAIN\DataViewers <-- This is a group
  Member: MYDOMAIN\DataEditors <-- This is a group

If I add the MYDOMAIN\AllUsers group as a SQL Server login (and map it to some databases), none of the end users (i.e. Hazel, Seamus, Vaughan, Liesel) can connect. If I add the MYDOMAIN\DataViewers or MYDOMAIN\DataEditors groups as logins, though, their members can connect. Similarly, if I add an end user directly to the AllUsers group, they can connect normally.

It appears as if the nested group model I had envisioned is not supported in SQL Server 2008, but I have been unable to find any documents that state this conclusively. Therefore, my q

Synchronize group calendar from Sharepoint 2007 (SBS Server 2008) using ActiveSync for mobile device

I've created a Public Folder Calendar on my Exchange Server that our Office Manager uses to inform all our partners and staff (small medical practice) of vacations, group meetings, etc.

I'd like to make this calendar available to mobile devices (1 Windows Mobile, 1 Blackberry, 3 iPhones). I know that individual user Exchange Calendars can sync, but I'm told Microsoft isn't making any effort to make this happen for Public Folder calendars because they're being deemphasized and will disappear in either the next or subsequent version of Exchange. There's a third party product that claims to do this (Outlook AddIn). Since the Public Folder Calendars are being de-emphasized in favor of the Sharepoint calendar, one would think that Activesync would be able to work with the SharePoint group calendar, but apparently that's not the case. Is my best bet still the Add to Outlook product from diditbetter.com?

Granting Permissions to AD Group on SQL Server 2008 Instance

Tech Folks,

    Good Morning!!!! Here is my question ....I am using "Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (SP1) - 10.0.2531.0 (X64)   Mar 29 2009 10:11:52   Copyright (c) 1988-2008 Microsoft Corporation  Standard Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 6.0 <X64> (Build 6001: Service Pack 1) ".

I was asked to provide Sysadmin permssions on this instance to all Domain Admins. To provide requested access I have created a login for AD Group Domain Admins in SQL Server 2008. But members of this group can't access SQL Sever. If I add these members individually in SQL Server logins then only they are getting permissions. I tried to create login using both GUI and T-SQL, in both ways it is not working.

Operating System: Windows Standard Edition SP1 64-bit

Please reply if any one of you resolved it.

Have a great day

Seven reasons to care about SQL Server 2008 R2

Microsoft begins to fully realize its vision of SQL Server as an information platform and not "just" a database. Hence the main theme for this release -- at least according to Microsoft -- is self-service BI. The PowerPivot plug-ins for Excel 2010 and SharePoint 2010 are easily going to make the biggest splash of all the new features, not least because they're the most complete. But then, SQL Server 2008 R2 isn't strictly necessary for PowerPivot for Excel, which works with plenty of other data sources.

sql server 2008 adventureworks database

dear Friends

For my MCTS 70 -433 examination, I recently installed sql server 2008 and installed the sample databases too. but my issue is, in that book they have mentioned a database called "AdventureWorks2008" and the nice thing is I don't have a such a database with me in my sql server 2008.

And the query is

-- MERGE Statement
USE AdventureWorks2008
MERGE INTO	Sales.SalesOrderDetailHistory AS SODH
USING Sales.SalesOrderDetail AS SOD
ON SODH.SalesOrderID = SOD.SalesOrderID
AND SODH.SalesOrderDetailID = SOD.SalesOrderDetailID
INSERT (LineTotal, SalesOrderID, SalesOrderDetailID, CarrierTrackingNumber, OrderQty
, ProductID, SpecialOfferID, UnitPrice, UnitPriceDiscount
, rowguid, ModifiedDate, Cancelled)
VALUES(LineTotal, SalesOrderID, SalesOrderDetailID, CarrierTrackingNumber, OrderQty
, ProductID, SpecialOfferID, UnitPrice, UnitPriceDiscount
, rowguid, ModifiedDate, DEFAULT)
UPDATE SET SOHD.Cancelled = 'True'
OUTPUT $action , inserted.* ;

Please help me to overcome this issue and let me know where can I download that database too.

Word Automation Issue in Windows Server 2008 Hosting

The problem I am posting here is that I was facing nearly 2 weeks around. Any body comes with this stuff please help.

Word Automation in sample ASP.NET(C#) application.

I am using Microsoft.Office.Inetrop.Word Assembly for automation. Here I am reading a XXX.dot template file and fill the contents with dynamic data.

When i am executing my code in localhost:someportnumber the automation is working fine and I could get expected result and when I am hosting in my inetmgr(Windows XP is my OS) it is also working fine.

But the problem is that when I am hosting in my production server(Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition) I am not able to perform automation and results in the following error.

Data: System.Collections.ListDictionaryInternal
Message: Word has encountered a problem.
Source: Microsoft Word

The code gets failed in the following line:

ApplicationClass wordApp = new Microsoft.Office.Interop.Word.ApplicationClass();

Document wordDoc = wordApp.Documents.Add(ref oTemplate, ref oFalse, ref oMissing, ref oMissing); // Error in this line

I cannot able to proceed further. Can anybody please help me in solving this issue?

Thank you.

No ASPNET User in Windows Server 2008?

I have been looking everywhere online regarding this, but have not found a clear answer.

I have an ASP.Net app running on Windows Server 2008, it's basically a reporting app using Crystal Reports. I have encountered a roadblock in regards to rendering some pages. When I run the app in Visual Studio(on the same 2008 machine) everything works perfectly. Yet when I publish it and run it live the reports will not display correctly, I get a message saying Failed to render page.

I looked this error up in the Crystal Reports website and the fixes they have there refer to giving the windows "aspnet" user full access rights to certain folders on the machine. I would be happy to do this, however there is no aspnet user in Windows Server 2008.

I installed the server and set its role to be Web Server. I also checked all the options regarding ASP.Net and IIS 6 compatibility. Yet there is no ASPNET username anywhere.

Did I set the server up wrong? or do I have to do something within ASP.Net to  create this user and then give it rights?

Not working on Windows Server 2008

I had the CSS friendly adapters working great on our old server (windows server 2003 - 32bit) and now we have moved to a 64 bit environment and now I can not get the CSS friendly adapters to work.

We are using SharePoint 2007.

Is there another work thru for 64bit environment.

I notice windows server 2008 has a directory  C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64 would I be using the browser file in this directory???

Please help!

Under the Table: Programming with FileStreams in SQL Server 2008

There's always been disagreement about whether large blobs, such as document and multimedia items, should be stored in the database or file system. In SQL Server 2008 you don't have to choose; filestream storage provides the best of both approaches.
