Having problems installing/setting up SQL Server 2008 Express/R2 for ASP.NET user management on deve

I'm a bit new to installing and configuring, well, just about anything regarding databases, so please bear with me. I'm currently building a couple of ASP.NET MVC 2 sites.  I'm following along with the MVCMusicStore tutorial, and am trying to set up user management using ASP.NET's configuration tool.  The problem is that ASP.NET can't 'see' the database. I have SQL Server 2008 installed on my laptop.  It's the version which is available on the Web Platform Installer (I believe it's Express).  When I try running the aspnet_sqlreg.exe program to set up my user management database, it can't tell that I'm running any version of SQL Server at all.  I get an exception about 'named pipes', and some other things I don't understand at the moment. Obviously, this is all a bit over my head.  Is there an idiot proof guide or tutorial available that describes, step-by-step, how to: 1. Install SQL Server 2008 on a development PC 2. How to configure it to be used by Visual Studio 2010 Professional 3. How to properly upload/modify the db on the production server with what's on the development PC Essentially, all the things that the ASP.NET tutorials gloss over.  Any suggestions, links to documentation, or other nudges in the right direction would be immensely appreciated.

My problem:I do something like this:$dbsvr = new-object microsoft.sqlserver.management.smo.server "servername"$dbsvr.databases | ft name, size -autosizeWhen i run this from two different PC's i get database sizes that are all the same (5.25 mb), the size of the first database listed - which is master.I started to try out a few things, and found out that when i run the same command from one of our servers it returns the correct sizes...Anyone have any idea if this a SMO issue, or maybe some package software version issue...- or what?

Error Installing Sql Management Studio 2008 on 64 Bit Windows 7

I am getting the following message when I try to install SQL Management Studio on a 64 bit Windows 7 Premium Dell Laptop.

The message is: Sqlserver 2008 Setup requires Microsoft .net Framework 3.5 SP1 to be installed.

I have downloaded the Service pack and attempted to install as Adminstrator  (Dotnetfx35setup.exe).   It comes up and asks if I want to run it, but nothing ever loads.     I don't know if a registry setting is conflicting with the installation or what.

This computer came with Vista Home Premium 64bit and we installed the upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit (in case this has something to do with it.)   I have 2008 SQL Express running without problem along with Visual Studio 2008.

Any advice or suggestions to try would be appreciated.

Keep going around in circles when installing SQLServer 2008

I tried to download from http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter, but I kept going in circles when I clicked "Cancel" on the page where they ask for personal information. It is not mandatory to provide this information as is written at the top of the page. But when I click "Cancel", I just return back to http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter.

Installing both VS Pro 2008 and VWD2008

I work at an educational institution and in our computing labs we have Visual Studio Professional 2008 installed already. One of our academics has requested me to install Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition as they think it's easier for their beginner students to learn, but I've noticed it wants to install it in the same folder as our Visual Studio Professional install.

Can both be installed without the limited VWD interfering with the Professional version?

Need help with setting up SQL Server 2008 for role/user management

I've posted my problem in a few other categories.  Sorry for that.  I didn't see the security category until now.

I'm trying to use ASP.NET's built-in role/user management for a couple ASP.NET MVC 2 sites.  I'm using the MVCMusicStore as my guide.  I click on the Configuration Tool as the tutorial suggests, which launches the site administration page.  Unfortunately when I click on the security tab, I get an error that it cannot connect to the data store.  Attempting to test the AspNetSqlProvider gives me a similar error.

I've run the aspnet_regsql program as the error message suggested, and I have a role/user management database ready to go on the server.  The proper tables are constructed, and all that.  The configuration tool still doesn't see the data store.

As a test, I ran the MVCMusicStore demo in the debugger.  Its role/user management functionality worked.  I was able to add myself as a customer, and add/remove items from my cart with no errors or exceptions.  However, when I attempted to access its security tab in the configuration tool, I received the same error as I get for my own project.  How is it possible that role/user management works, but the configuration tool cannot change its settings?

Any suggestions on how I can get the configuration t

How to connect to local instance of SQL Server 2008 Management Studio Express ?

I just installed SQL Server 2008 Management studio Express on my Vista machine.

i tried connecting to local machine using :

.\sqlexpress, (local)\sqlexpress, or .\SQLExpress, MyPCNAME\SQLExpress

nothing is working, getting this error:

Cannot connect to PC-NAME\SQLEXPRESS. A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. SQLServer 2008 Tools and SQL 2005 Cluster

I recently built a SQL Server 2005 cluster on the o/s Windows Server 2008 R2.  I have been attempting to connect to the cluster from my Windows 7 dekstop with my SQL Server 2008 Tool set.  I have been unable to attach to this cluster since its creation. The firewall is temp off, remote connections in the surface area configuration is set to pipes and tcp/ip and the Browser surface is up and running. I ran Wireshark against the cluster and I could see that there was UDP conversations for ms-sql-m (SQL Port) but that was as far as it would get.  I am using a named instance so not using 1433, but I do see the cluster offering up high RPC ports but the client never responds after the initial UDP response. When I noticed that there was a two way conversation taking place, I went to a seperate machine and fired up SQL Server 2005 Tools and I was easily able to attach to the cluster.  So my question is - Are there any known incompatibilities between SQL Server 2005 cluster services and SQL Server 2008 Tool set?  I can use my 2008 tools to attach to a non-clustered SQL Server 2005 w/o issue.   Error when attempting to connect: A network-related or instance-specific error occured while establishing a connection to sql server.  The server was not found or was not accessible.  Verify that the instance name is correct and the SQL Server is con

Powershell script that uses Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.Server need to use Sql Server Autheni

I have written a powershell script that uses Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.Server.  I have a couple of instances that are on different domains that I must use Sql Server authenication.  I am going to create a report user "sssmorpt".  What is the least a can grant this user to allow me to use Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.Server to get "$dbsize = $db.size - ($db.logfiles|measure-object -property size -sum).sum / 1024" for all databases in an instances?

Was installing SQL 2008 Enterprise last night via RDP. When I came in this morning, I was disconnect

When I opened a connection, the old connection was gone, perhaps a reboot? I am able to connect to the instance from the server and create a table  and query a DB.  I am however unable to connect to the Instance from my 2005 client. How can I tell the install was successful? Looking in the event logs and not seeing anything around the time it would have completed. Additionally: I checked and Remote connections is enabled. TCP and Pipes are enabled. SQL Browser is stopped, when attempt to access to start that I get an error: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices asssociated with it [0X80070422] I can't telnet into 1433 on the server.. might be firewall. Do I really need to open that manually? My client is SQL 2005, I believe I've connect to sql 2008 DBs. Should I upgrade the client on my client? I attempted to stop and start the instance. when I started it I got this mess: Server stack trace:    at Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.UI.VSIntegration.ObjectExplorer.ObjectExplorer.FindObjectExplorerFrame()    at Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.UI.VSIntegration.ObjectExplorer.ObjectExplorer.GetObjectExplorer(Boolean activateWindow)    at Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.UI.VSIntegration.ObjectExplorer.ObjectExplorer.ShowError(Exception e)    at Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.UI.
