I have a database diagram. SSMS will let me save it. It won't let me save it as... How can I find out where SSMS has saved my diagram file?

Visual Studio Extension: Save UML diagram as image

I am auditing one big legacy application. I use Visual Studio 2010 modeling projects to visualize the design of this legacy application. When I wanted to get my UML diagrams to image files so I can insert them to documents I found no option for it. As it turned out we have to write extension for modeling projects and deploy it as Visual Studio 2010 extension. Here is the installer and source package of my UML.SaveAsImage extension. UML.SaveAsImage.zip VS2010 solution | 48KB UML.SaveAsImage.Install.zip VSIX insaller | 4KB I still cannot believe that we need to write extensions to get our UML diagrams to image files but okay, it's done now and let's say - problem is solved. At least this one. In my work I used code example by Cameron Skinner. He has very good blog posting titled as Save a diagram to Image File. Here are steps how I wrote this extension. 1. Create new Layer Designer Command Extension project As a first thing you should create layer designer command extension project. If you don't have support for modeling projects you should take more powerful edition of Visual Studio 2010. Name it your project as you like and click OK. 2. Add functionality to Command class You can find Command class from your new project. This class is created by default. Here is the modified code from Cameron Ski

How to open multiple .sql files in only one ssms instance

I'm pretty sure this almost equal to some question I already read here but did not solved my problem.

Here we go... I'm currently working on a Windows Server 2008 R2 with SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server Management Studio istalled.

When working in Visual Studio with database solution with lot of .sql files I used to double-click on the .sql files and they were opened in the same SSMS instance (if any already opened). Due to a OS error I formatted and reconfigured everything again but now I'm getting a new SSMS instance when double clicking in each sql file. Its really painful one .sql - one SSMS instance so I started my research about that.

What I've tried till now:

1) Right click on the .sql file > "Open With" option > "Add" option > "Program Name: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Binn\VSShell\Common7\IDE\Ssms.exe" and "Friendly Name: SQL" > "Ok" > "Set as Default". Does NOT work. Still having one sql - one ssms instance.

2) Perfomed Run > regedit > and modify the value data of HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\sqlwb.sql.9.0\Shell\Open\Command  and replace /dde with "%1". DOES NOT WORK

3) Right click on the .sql file > "Open With" option > "Add" option > "Programe Name: explorer.exe" and "Fri

sharepoint-2010 how to open files that prompt for save or cancel

In SharePoint 2010, there is a new setting at the web application level called Browser File Handling (Fig. 1). You get to this setting with these steps:
.Central Admin > Application Management > Manage Web Applications
.Single-click the row of your web application
.Click General Settings in the ribbon
.Scroll down to Browser File Handling and select Permissive

Browser File Handling settings

By default, this is set to Strict when creating a web application. However, this causes issues in many ways related to opening certain files from SharePoint. The most obvious example is with PDFs. When set to Strict, a PDF can only be Saved (downloaded), but in Permissive mode, the PDF can be opened directly. For instance, here are the different results when clicking on a PDF in a SharePoint 2010 Document Library:

Opening a PDF in Strict mode

Opening a PDF in Permissive mode

As you can see, in Strict mode, I am prompted to Save or Cancel In Permissive mode, the PDF immediately opens without being prompted and in my case, my PDFs open in the browser by default (this is a setting you can change).

Another way this issue manifests itself is when opening versions in an InfoPath form library. Someone posted this issue on the forums, and when I didn''t experience the same issue, I immediately thought of Browser File Handling. Mine was alre

Clean Web.Config Files (VS 2010 and .NET 4.0 Series)

.NET 4 includes a new version of the CLR, and a new .NET 4 specific machine.config file (which is installed side-by-side with the one used by .NET 2, .NET 3 and .NET 3.5).

The new .NET 4 machine.config file now automatically registers all of the ASP.NET tag sections, handlers and modules that we've added over the years, including the functionality for:

.ASP.NET Dynamic Data
.ASP.NET Routing (which can now be used for both ASP.NET WebForms and ASP.NET MVC)
.ASP.NET Chart Control (which now ships built-into ASP.NET V4)
What this means is that when you create a new "Empty ASP.NET application" project in VS 2010, you'll find that the new default application-level web.config file is now clean and simple:

An Entity Relationship Diagram Example

An Entity Relationship Diagram conveys a lot of information with a very concise notation. The important part to keep in mind is to limit what you're reading using the following technique:

Choose two entities (e.g. Company and Employee)
Pick one that you're interested in (e.g. how a single Company relates to employees)
Read the notation on the second entity (e.g. the crow's feet with the O above it next to the Employee entity).

UML Diagram Types

UML provides a number of diagram types as a mechanism for entering model elements into the model and showing overlapping sets of models elements and their relationships. UML does not specify what diagrams should be created or what they should contain, only what they can contain and the rules for connecting the elements. The diagram types include:

UML Diagram Types - 2

Further diagram types include:

Activity Diagrams - a generic flow chart used much in business modelling and sometimes in use case modelling to indicate the overall flow of the use case. This diagram type replaces the need for dataflow diagrams but is not a main diagram type for the purposes of analysis and design.

Use Case Diagram

The use case diagram shows the functionality of the system from an outside-in viewpoint.

Actors (stick men) are anything outside the system that interacts with the system.

SharePoint document migration challenges when migrating files and folders

There are several challenges when migrating documents to Microsoft SharePoint. While these challenges can be overcome, they are a real pain if the migration source, content and file systems are not SharePoint friendly.
