Can no longer edit a maintenance plan in SSMS

Posted By:      Posted Date: May 22, 2011    Points: 0   Category :
I have a SQL Server 2005 instance (the entire stack) installed and am using maintenance plans for backups, etc.  I performed a side-by-side installation of SQL Server 2008 (the entire stack).  All appeared well.

However, no longer see the maintenance plans under the maintenance plan folder in SSMS (neither SSMS 2k5 or SSMS 2k8).  I can see the plans if I connect to Integration services.  The maintenance plans execute sucessfully.

I am not 100% sure this behavior was not present before the 2k8 install, but I really have no reason to think otherwise, either.  I just did not pay close attention to it.

Is this an intended behavior?  Now, to edit the plans I have to export them from Integration Services, edit them in BIDS/VS and re-import them (unless I am missing something).  Not a show stopper but it is a hassle.  It is also something that will cause my customers to shake their heads and wonder what is going on.

Any ideas?

Export Maintenance Plan in SSMS

Where are the subplan schedules when I exported /imported a Maintenance Plan in SSMS ? How can I ensure that they are exported with ?

Edited maintenance plan package - now .log files no longer created

**Resubmited to new forum as "Tools General" may be more appropriate**

Hi all - any help would be appreciated

We created a standard maintainance plan via MS management with logging to text files. - working fine

I added a custom connection to a folder for manual backup of all ssis packages - Manage Connections no longer works via MS.

Imported the Maintplan into VS Solution - Edited connections and turned on SQL server logging

imported back into Integration services (MSDB/MaintPlans) - Log files are no longer being created.

Checked the "Reporting Task for subplan-{CEF4A469-AD4E-4762-B8F7-C3598E732AEE}" - it will not run in VS. and failed in the overnight job

Any ideas?

Maintenance plan to rebuild Full-text index ? (SQL 2005)

Is it possible, through the GUI Wizard, to create a Maintenance plan that rebuilds (rather than reorganise/optimise) a Full text index in 2005 ? The full text index is based on one table only - so would using the "Rebuild index task" in the Wizard do the trick ? I wouldn't mind if the other indexes on the table were rebuilt too, but main concern in the Full text Index. If not - then I guess it would be a scheduled job which does a ALTER FULLTEXT CATALOG catalog_name REBUILD, but I thought it would be nice to keep it within the - Management - Maintenance plans - section of SQL Management Studio. Also - should this be preceeded with a transaction log backup ? Had some issues rebuilding them last night - seemed a Log backup was needed.

Maintenance Plan Works, But Not Through SQL Job

If I am in the wrong sub-forum, please let me know where I belong. I submitted this issue to this sub, b/c I believe I have an accessibility issue. I have a maintenance place that executes a stored proc. The stored proc is as followings: CREATE PROCEDURE spFirst     @Err AS INT = -1 AS     EXEC @Err = xp_cmdshell 'dir C:\temp\*.exe'     EXEC msdb.dbo.sp_send_dbmail @profile_name = 'Mail_Proj',                                        @recipients = 'me@xyz.com',                                              @body = 'Complete',                                           @subject = 'Dir Listing' The proc runs successfully and when done, I always get an email message in my Inbox, as expected. When the proc is executed directly from the maintenance plan, it still runs successfully, and the email message is successfully received in my Inbox. A SQL Job was setup to run the maintenance plan. The history of the job indicates that it is completing successfully, but this cannot be true, as my inbox never receives the expected email

Cannot create maintenance plan in SQL 2008 SP1

I receive the following error trying to create a maintenance plan in SQL 2008 SP1 on a Windows 2008/R2 server: The action you attempted to perform on a remote instance of SQL Server has failed because the action requires a SQL Server component that is not installed on the remote computer. To proceed, install Microsoft SQL Server Management Tools on the remote computer, and then try again. The components that installed are Database Engine Services, Reporting Services, Client Tools Connectivity, Management Tools Basic/Complete, and SQL Client Connectivity SDK.  I have another independent SQL 2008 SP1 server running on the same platform with the same features installed and I have no problem creating maintenance plans there.  However, it does have IIS as it was upgraded from a SQL 2005 server which required IIS for reporting services while SQL 2008 does not. I'm familiar with http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqltools/thread/06c80a78-a877-4a48-a032-b0aef78a598c but that doesn't seem to apply as this was a new SQL 2008 installation on a freshly installed OS.  I've seen several other postings of this on the web but they all appear specific to SQL 2005. What else could be missing? Thanks.

Maintenance Update Statistics plan

Hi, I've created a maintenance plan for many databases with these tasks (SQL 2005) 1- shrink Database 2- Update Statistics 3- Cleanup History 4- Backup Database (Full) 5- Maintenance Cleanup task The maintenance plan failed at task Update Statics.  Here the error message : Error number : -1073548784 Error message : Executing the query "UPDATE STATISTICS [dbo].[LOG_DETAILS] WITH FULLSCAN " failed with the following error: "Could not continue scan with NOLOCK due to data movement.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly. My question :How do I know which database is causing the problem and how can I fix the problem ? I don't know a dbo database? thanks,   Jasmin

SQL 2008 Maintenance Plan configuration help

A client has purchased a software package that runs on SQL 2008, They did the initial install but that is a they want to do on there end. They have sent us a list on maintenance jobs to be configured but are no help in getting them in place. I have very little SQL expereince so I am looking for direction. Here is a list of jobs they wanted setup. 1.       Check database integrity – set plan to fire off daily. 2.       Reorganize index – set weekly – except on the week that you Rebuild indexes.  Start index page size at 50%. 3.       Rebuild index – set monthly 4.       Update statistics – set weekly after reorganize indexes and rebuild indexes. 5.       Clean up history – set monthly 6.       Back Up Database (FULL) – set daily 7.       Maintenance Cleanup Task – this is to control the number of locally available backups.          Can anyone help me get these in place? Thanks in advanced for any help. I am doing manual backups only a this time.

SQL 2008 SP1 - ALTER FAILED in Maintenance Plan

Hi, One of my SQL 2008 SP1 servers is experiencing periodic failures of a database maintenance plan that includes integrity checks.  Failed:(0) Alter failed for Server 'ssomsitrack1v'.  I've seen other postings from people who have had this issue with SQL 2005 and fixed it by either applying a service pack, enabling the "automatically set processor affinity mask" and/or I/O affinity mask settings, or by executing a sp_configure 'allow updates',0. This server already has both affinity mask checkboxes set, and allow updates is already set to 0.  The maintenance plan fails with this message about 1 in 4 times.  The server is on a VMWare VM w/2GB RAM and two vCPU's.  There's only one user database and it's tiny (~200MB). Any ideas?

Maintenance Plan Backup Failing Time to time

See ERRORO Below: I am using SQL Server 2008 64 bit enterprise edition and backing up on network drive. Does a Maintenance Plan "Rebuild Index" task on Tables + Views rebuild the full text indexes ?

As subject really.

I'm talking about a complete rebuild - not an incremental, or a re-organise.

SQL 2005

The full text indexes are only on individual tables, not Views.

I've asked a similar question before, but sufficiently different, and other is marked as Answered so thought I'd open a new Q : http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/sqltools/thread/5f17f4f1-fba9-436f-aedf-cfbfd89c8db2)

maintenance plan error send email

Some body have this error : Could not generate mail report. An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. No global profile is configured. Specify a profile name in the @profile_name parameter. When i execute my maintenance plan.

T-SQL in Maintenance Plan

When I run this code in the query tool, it works.  But I put the exact code in a T-SQL Task of a Maintenance Plan and I get the following error:

Status: Warning: One or more tasks failed..
Execute T-SQL Statement Task (ALX-ENGCSRV32)
Execute TSQL on Local server connection
Execution time out: 30000
Task start: 2010-09-24T12:24:41.
Task end: 2010-09-24T12:24:41.
Failed:(-1073548784) Executing the query "DBCC SHRINKFILE (N'MES_HDL_Batch_log' , 0, TRUNCATEONLY) WITH NO_INFOMSGS;
" failed with the following error: "Could not locate file 'MES_HDL_Batch_log' for database 'master' in sys.database_files. The file either does not exist, or was dropped. ". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly.

Command:USE MES_HDL_Batch;

I understand the problem but don't know how to fix it - not looking at right database in order to find the log file.

FYI: I'm in a manufacturing environment and working with a older boxed product where transaction log just grows and grows.  We don't ever roll transactions back or anything so that's

slow Edit Top 200 Rows in SSMS

I have a fast dedicated  server (2008 64bit) with mssql 2008 hosted by my provider on the internet. I create a database with SSMS on the server itself with 1 empty table, with 1 row. When I right click this table and use: “Edit Top 200 Rows” it shows this empty table directly.

When I login from my local computer and connect using SSMS and do also “Edit Top 200 Rows”, it first wait for 6 seconds and then shows the table data.

Just for testing did the same witch a table with 5000 rows. Also the same thing happens. When I do a “Select Top 1000 rows”, it shows within 1 second, so the server and its connection looks fine.

Question: What can do to speed up this “Edit Top 200 Rows”?

Question about Maintenance Plan

I made mistake and ran "Maintenance Plan" instead another job
from SQL server agent, it did not executed but run time was 20 secund, i stoped it manualy. I am interested in this will cause any problem? did it change something in database if it did now full execute ?

Can No Longer Edit PDF from SharePoint

We are running SharePoint 2007 MOSS, and we had followed this KB to make SP a little more friendly to PDFs:

We were also able to easily click on a PDF and select "Edit in Adobe Acrobat" and have it open right up, just like you can for office Docs. Now all the sudden when we click Edit on PDFs we get this message:
"the document could not be opened for editing. a windows sharepoint services compatible application could not be found to edit the document"

Kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place on this one. Thanks in advance.

SQL Server Maintenance Plan - Update Statistics fails if schema contains special chars

We have a database schema with a period in it's name.  This is valid as per http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa224033(SQL.80).aspx. When we create a maintenance plan to update statistics it will succeed if the object property is set to 'Tables and Views'. If this is set to 'Table' it will fail.

Steps to Reproduce

  • Create a new schema in a user database with a period in it's name, ie
    CREATE SCHEMA [Windows.EventLog] AUTHORIZATION [dbo]
  • Create a table with owner using schema created in #1, ie
    CREATE TABLE [Windows.EventLog].[Computer](
    	[ComputerId] [smallint] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
    	[ComputerName] [varchar](255) NOT NULL,
    ) ON [PRIMARY]
  • Create a new maintenance plan, drag 'Update Statistics Task' to designer surface, edit properites, choose the user database, View T-SQL and test execution: it will work
  • Edit maintenance plan and modify 'Update Statistics Task', change Object to Table, change selection to all, execute task and it will fail. Also, if you now try to click 'View T-SQL' or change it back to 'Tables and Views', a error dialog with title 'Microsoft.SqlServer.MaintenancePlanTasksUI' shows will message 'Object

Maintenance Plan - Full Backup

Hey all

I am running a maintenance plan (Sql Server 2008 Enterprise) every night at mid-night. All the plan entails is doing a full backup of one database (about a 3GB database). We are getting timeouts on our site at exactly that point when the database is being backed up and they last up to 20min. I was under the impression that doing backups this way does not take the db down? Or am I wrong about this?

Has anyone else experienced this and if so what steps did you take to rectify it? Sorry if I have not provided other information, just let me know and I will give it to you.
