SQL Tracking Service XAML only (Type, Workflow and Activity db tables)

Posted By:      Posted Date: May 22, 2011    Points: 0   Category :JavaScript/VBScript

Ok, we've implemented workflow completely into our system now and I've starting to see the tracking database grow fairly quickly, which was expected

I am now working on a purge routine and or partitioning.

What I have noticed is that the Workflow and Type db tables will constantly grow no matter what.  They are not considered "partitioned" tables.

My main question is the architectural decision around this XAML only approach of tracking versus the code behind\beside approach.  I have a hypothesis I will present below.

In code behind\beside.

Is there a plan to support a custom activity type as a root document in xaml on VS workflow designer

Referring to the post below. It seems that the current VS workflow designer only support "Activity" type as a root document. Is there a plan to support a custom activity type as a root document in xaml on next release of WF?

Display XAML workflow image in browser and hightlight the current Activity

I have a requirement in project to display the XAML workflow in browser as image like the Visual studio designer displaying and it should Hightlight the current activity in workflow.  Please guide me on this.rajeevkalyan

Workflow Service 4.0 with One Way Receive activity will not get fired when called by a console based

Workflow Service 4.0 with One Way Receive activity will not get fired when called by a console based client application. This service does get called when there's the default ReceiveRequest coupled with a SendReply activity in the service. However deleting the ReceiveRequest and SendReply Activities and replacing it with a one way Receive Activity causes the Workflow 4.0 Service to not get called. System.ArgumentException : The input workflow type must be an Activity.

Hi everyone! I’m getting this error when starting up the workflow:

System.ArgumentException : The input workflow type must be an Activity.
Parameter name: workflowType

The code I’m using is shown below:

using (var wf = new WorkflowRuntime())
  wf.WorkflowCompleted += (_, __) => signal.Set();
  wf.WorkflowTerminated += (_, __) => signal.Set();
  var args = new Dictionary<stringobject>();
  args.Add("Input", plainText);
  var inst = wf.CreateWorkflow(typeof (HtmlTypography), args

Cannot create unknown type when loading WF Service from loose Xaml with ActivityXamlServices

I am trying to host a WF4 (RC) Service dynamically. I have a test solution with two projects. The first is a declarative workflow service library with one root Flowchart activity in it, and a simple custom code activity. The workflow service library does not depend on any other custom assemblies or references. The second is my host app, which in my test solution is just a console application.

In my host app, I am attempting to the use ActivityXamlServices to load the Xaml for the workflow service into an activity, and then use the WorkflowServiceHost to fire up a workflow instance using that activity.

As soon as I try to new up the WorkflowServiceHost object, I get this exception...

Cannot create unknown type '{clr-namespace:DeclarativeServiceLibrary1}CodeActivity1'.

If I remove CodeActivity1 from my Flowchart designer, everything runs fine. If I add a direct reference to the workflow service project from my host project and then create a WorkflowServiceHost using an instance of my Flowchart activity instead of the activity created from the Xaml, it also works fine.

It seems to not like using my CodeActivity for some reason when loaded dynamically.

Reuse XAML Declarative Workflow in Workflow Service (xamlx) Results in Server Error of System.Argume

We attempted to reuse a XAML (declarative activity workflow) in a few places within the same XAMLX and it doesn't appear to allow this.   On the WCF client side, it reported an obscure error of something to the effect of unknown message received and a communication error stating the service instance couldn't be used at this time and to ensure the call order is correct or order delivery guarantee is enabled.   However, this appears to mask the true issue which is on the server side.   Apparently, when the server side WCF end point is trying to start the workflow instance, it throws this error building a dictionary of workflow children...

Passing parameters of type List<> from a web application to the Receive activity of a workflow servi

I have a Recieve activity with the following parameters in the Content property.  Using generic parameter names here:

- parameter1 of type Object1 assigned to Parameter1 variable

- parameter2 of type List<Object2> assigned to Parameter2 variable.  Note - default value of Parameter2 variable = New List(Of Object2)()

- parameter3 of type Object3 assigned to Parameter3 variable

In my web application, I create a service reference and create a client as such:

SomeWFServiceClient client = null

 client = new
 List<Object2> listOfObject2 = new
 List<Object2> { new
 Object2 {Id=1, Name="SomeName"
, Type="Customer"
 }, };

client.ProcessSomething(Object1, listOfObject2, Object3);

I have a breakpoint at the Receive activity.  When I look at the values that get assigned to the Receive activity parameters, I see that parameter1 and parameter3 ge

How to Add a Send Activity in a Workflow Service try/catch catch block?

For a Workflow Service that has ReceiveRequest/SendResponse Activities, you can right click on the ReceiveRequest Activity a do a Create SendReply to add multiple SendResponse Activities.

The problem is that I want to have a Try/Catch block in the Workflow Service.  This way when a fault occurs, I want to log the exception in my database and then use a Send or a SendResponse Activity to send the fault information back to the caller of the workflow service.

Bottom line is that VS2010 does not allow me to add an additional SendReply Activity inside the catch block.

Do you know how to do this?

Web Service Workflows: Deploy Distributed Business Processes With Windows Workflow And Web Services

Due to the distributed nature of a business process it makes sense for a workflow to be deployed as a distributed application. See how Windows Workflow and Web Services hold the key.

How to Cancel a Workflow Activity - LogToHistoryListActivity

How can I cancel a LogToHistoryListActivity? I don't understand how to get access to the ActivityExecutionContext. I guess one way is to add an IfElse before entry to avoid the activity completely. Casting the sender object does not work. Help anyone?

  private void logToHistoryListActivity_WorkflowActivated_MethodInvoking(object sender, EventArgs e)
   LogToHistoryListActivity log = (LogToHistoryListActivity)sender;
   string msg = string.Format("Work Request has been SAVED by {0}. Awaiting submittal.", workflowProperties.Originator);
   WFHelper.LogMessageToHistoryList(log, msg, null);

VS 2010 XAML Design View Load always fail with a Type Load Exception

Create a new WPF project in VS and change nothing. The Design View will fail to load with the error below. Microsoft.Expression.DesignModel is an assembly from Expression Blend. I ever installed Blend 4 RC and uninstall and install Blend 4. I Reflector the assembly I have under Blend 4 bin folder. And cannot find a interface named ISharedInstanceBuilder. But the WPF project is a Template project without any changes. How it get related with Blend 4? And how to fix it? Thanks.

Cannot register a service type without attaching the source assembly to the host process

I'm wondering if there is any way I can register a service type without attaching the source assembly to the host process. When I register the service type, the source assembly (which has the type) cannot be written.   I appreciate your attention..

Sequential Workflow project unable to compile referencing x64 Workflow Activity Library

Folks -   I have an sequential workflow project targeting x64 that will not compile if the workflow activity library that it references is compiled for x64 (it will compile if the activity library targets x86).  The compile error I receive is: Compilation failed. Unable to load one or more of the requested types. Retrieve the LoaderExceptions property for more information. [project name]   Any thoughts on how to figure this out?   Thanks.
