Master Pages: Master Your Site Design with Visual Inheritance and Page Templates

Master pages in ASP.NET 2.0 solve a problem many Web developers have been solving on their own with a variety of techniques for years - providing a single master template for an entire site. This article covers the details of master pages, discussing their usage and implementation and how they are a natural evolution of custom techniques developers are using today.

Problems with inheritance in WCF

Hi, I've got some code written using remoting that I'm considering updating to use WCF as WCF has some pretty nice features, however I've been having real problems getting inheritance to work going across WCF using binary serialization, I created some simple test code to get my head round whats going on using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.Linq; using System.Text; using System.Runtime; using System.Runtime.Remoting; using System.Runtime.Remoting.Channels; using System.Runtime.Remoting.Channels.Tcp; using System.ServiceModel; using System.ServiceModel.Channels; namespace Test { [ServiceContract] public interface IServer { [OperationContract] BaseType Get(); } public class Server : MarshalByRefObject, IServer { public BaseType Get() { return new InhertitedType(); } } [Serializable] public abstract class BaseType { public abstract string Name{ get;} } [Serializable] public class InhertitedType : BaseType { public override string Name{ get { return "Working"; } } } class Program { static int port=8888; static string ip = ""; static void Main(string[] args) { var binding = new NetTcpBinding(); var endpoint = new EndpointAddress(string.Format("net.tcp:/

Can someone explain this inheritance?

I am having trouble understanding the inheritance listed in http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc406686(office.12).aspx <%@ Page Debug="true" Language="C#" MasterPageFile="~/_admin/admin.master" Inherits="MSDN.SharePoint.Samples.WarmupJobManager, MSDN.SharePoint.Samples.SharePointWarmupJob, Version=, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=7fd1d26c5854f031" %> It almost looks to me like two classes are being inherited - WarmUpJobManager AND SharepointWarmupJob. Is this correct?...or even possible?? Neither class is a partial class. Sorry I am new to this and was trying to deploy this example but the inheritance displayed here has me confused. Thanks in advance, Jake.

How can I reset inheritance to regain controll of a subsite/subweb?

ViewModel and inheritance.

Let's say I get DataContract class from a Service reference. Now I want to use this class in a viewmodel because I need extended functionality. Can you guys recommend if the ViewModel class should inherit the class from the service or should the viewmodel have the class as a property instead? I've used both these approaches but I'm more and more thinking that using the class as property instead of inherit it is an easier way. Thanks for help!

IScriptControl and inheritance

For some time now, I have been creating script controls (in VB).  I have been inheriting Label and implementing IScriptControl, as that works well for me. Looking at where I am now, it's clear that there is a degree of commonality between many of the controls, so it would make sense to introduce an additional layer of inheritance - my own base control inheriting Label and implementing IScriptControl; and then the actual controls which will inherit from my base control.

Inheritance is usually simple enough, but I'm a bit stuck about:

  • how to handle the GetScriptDescriptors and GetScriptReferences across the two layers (overrides, shadows, etc).
  • whether I can split the Javasscript into multiple files (effectively common code and specific code) and then they just work together on the client (through $create, etc) as if they were just one file.

Pointers to examples and words of wisdom equally welcome.

Entity Framework Inheritance Question

I have two tables in my EDMX, I'll call them table A and table B.  I would like for table B to be inherited from table A, so A is the base type and B is derived from A.  I have set this up in my EDMX file as such by removing the association between the two tables, adding the inheritance and deleting the duplicate columns in B.  All fields are mapped properly and I have mapped the insert/update commands to stored procedures.  When I run run a test to save changes to B, I get no errors.  However, none of the fields in my base table, table A, are updated.  And when I try an insert, I get an error saying there is a foreign key violation.  When I checked with SQL profiler, I found that only the stored procedure to insert into table B is called.  I would need for the insert to table A to happen first, then table B.  But this is not happening and my update is not even touching table A.  Is there anything special I need to do to make sure that both tables are updated properly and the inserts are done for both (and in the correct order)?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Master Page Inheritance 2010

I have modified the v4.master masterpage in SharePoint 2010 on my site. When I create a new site under this site (subsite) it does not inherit the changes. I see the changes on the top site but not the subsite. Does 2010 behave different that 2007? In 2007 you had not problem telling subsites to inherit.

Break inheritance and carry over anonymous access

I have a library.  It is set to anonymous access.

But when I broke the inheritance on a single page in that library, the anonymous access was gone.

Is there a way that I can break the permission inheritance of each page and still keep anonymous access?

Form inheritance and key press event

I've created a basic form BasicForm which all other forms in my application will inherit. In this basic form I'd like to handle some generic stuff which are common for all of the forms.  An example => key press event, for when user would press ESC key in any of my forms it would automatically close that form. This is how I tried to do it:

public ref class BasicForm : public System::Windows::Forms::Form

 	protected: virtual void OnKeyPress(KeyPressEventArgs^ e) override
 		if (e->KeyChar == 0x1b ) // ESC

using inheritance in datacontract

Can i use inhericance in datacontract, so that i can define common properties under multiple datacontrace classes under a base class

I have multiple service methods in which some of the properties in datacontract are same. I want to create a base class with all the common properties for datacontract then specialized classes deriving from the this base class and adding extra properties as per their requirement.

But when i generate a proxy the base class properties are not coming directly on the child class, in proxy I have to do specilizedClass.Base.property. Is there a way, to generate a proxy class, such that child class direcly contains all the properties of base class.
