ListView DataPager with SQL-Statements that already return only paged data.

Posted By:      Posted Date: August 21, 2010    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net

As far as I understand the ListView-Control and the DataPager-Control, they work like this: The ListView gets its datarows from its data source, then the DataPager causes the ListView to display only a subset of those rows.

So what, when I want to use custom databinding for the ListView, that *already* gets the certain subset from SQL-Server (for better performance). Can I and how can I use the DataPager then?

Thanx, S.

Using ASP.NET 3.5's ListView and DataPager Controls: Displaying Data with the ListView

Prior to ASP.NET 3.5, developers who needed to display a set of records could choose between the GridView, DataList, and Repeater controls. The GridView provides rich data features, but has a very boxy layout; the DataList and Repeater allow for a more flexible layout, but lack the "point and click" data features found in the GridView, DetailsView, and FormView controls. The ListView bridges the gap between layout flexibility and built-in data features.

This article, the first in a series of articles on the ListView and DataPager controls, looks at the ListView's many available templates and illustrates how to display data. Read on to learn more!

Error: "Select statements included within a function cannot return data to a client"

hi all, Not sure if there is an easier way to do this but this is my first ever Function I created so far. I am getting the error: "Select statements included within a function cannot return data to a client" All I am trying to do is ...if the date is NOT passed then apply NULL as the default value and run the SELECT statement. If the date IS NOT null then run a different SELECT statement. CREATE FUNCTION [SchemaTest].[fn_Test] ( @instance as uniqueidentifier ,@date as datetime = null ) RETURNS varchar(8000) AS BEGIN If (@date is null) --@date = null ?? Begin Select * From Uds.RealtimeLogging Where instanceID = @instance End Else Begin Select * From Uds.RealtimeLogging Where instanceID = @instance and [timeStamp] > @date End Return @stepIds END Thank you!JCD

Posting data to ASMX and return Object for jQuery

I am using fluent NHibernate with WebForms and I am trying to build a page where I allow a user to post a status update on their profile page and I a using a .asmx WebService to post the data to the database and then returnig a StatusUpdate instance to the page to be used by jQuery. I have a couple problems.

1) First off when I return a string from the WebService(i was testing) the textbox where the user enters their status doesnt empty the contents. And since the page doesnt refresh even if I manally clear out the textbox and put in something else, it still posts the previous status to the database again. How do I fix this?

2) Secondly, when I return the StatusUpdate Object from the Webservice I cant the results to display anything. Like I sad, Im using jQuery to make an AJX call to the WebService.

Here is my code:

User Profile Page:

Status: <asp:Label ID="status" runat="server"></asp:Label><span style="font-size:.7em;"><asp:Label ID="statustime" runat="server"></asp:Label></span><br />
<textarea id="statusBox" rows="3" cols="40"></textarea><br />
<input type="button" value="Update Status" onclick="SetStatus(); return false;

[newbie] How to return a data record from a webservice (wsdl)?

vs2010, .NET 4.0

I have a webmethod which I want to return a data record (for example: name, surename, address, age, zip etc)

I wonder how to accomplish this. I think the solution is about creating an object which contains all the records serialized. And then the webmethod returns this serialized object. I'm not 100% sure how to accomplish this, if some of you good provide me with some tips, tutorial or link to an article explaining it, that would be great

SELECT statement to return NULL by matching data from another table.

Hi,I am fairly new at SQL and I have been struggling for days now trying to find an answer to my problem and i have come to the point where i have run out of ideas and about to give up. I'm hoping someone can put me in the correct path. The problem I have 3 table Table 1 Department" has the following columns: REF, NAME Table 2  "Department_Collection" has the following columns: REF, DEPARTMENT_REF, MANAGER_REF, STORE_REF, ACTIVE Table 3 Store" has the following columns: REF, NAME, STORE_ID  What i am trying to do is to take all the rows in the Department table and get a matching row (DEPARTMENT.NAME, DEPARTMENT_COLLECTION.REF) from the Department_Collection table, if it does not match any then still display DEPARTMENT.NAME but mark DEPARTMENT_COLLECTION.REF as null. I have tried the following select statement but it seem to remove all null values when supplied with a 'storename' SELECT DEPARTMENT.NAME, DEPARTMENT_COLLECTION.REF FROM DEPARTMENT_COLLECTION right outer join DEPARTMENT on DEPARTMENT_COLLECTION.DEPARTMENT_REF = DEPARTMENT.REF left outer join STORE on DEPARTMENT_COLLECTION.STORE_REF = STORE.REF where STORE.NAME = 'storename' order by DEPARTMENT.NAME   Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

IE 8 partially cut of my JSON data return from WCF service

Hi All, I am not so sure here is the right place to post my issue. I am using ExtJS treepanel and ajax call to wcf webservice and return JSON array. My service return array. If array count is less than 2, then IE partially cut of my JSON data return from WCF service. But FireFox is working fine with same JSON format string. Very interesting thing is that I try to debug with Fildder. so I have to put "." dot in my url "http://localhost{.}:1234/ then It is working fine.   I am testing with IE8. Here is the JSON format return from FF and FireBug. {"result":[{"href":"..\/EMP\/EmployeeSearch.aspx","iconCls":"","id":"8c362443-7bb3-427e-910c-87b391c6abf5","leaf":true,"text":"Employees"}]} Here is the corrupted JSON string retrun from IE using developer tool. {"result":[{"href":"..\/EMP\/E" [OperationContract] [WebInvoke(Method = "POST", UriTemplate = "GetSiteMap", BodyStyle = WebMessageBodyStyle.Wrapped, RequestFormat = WebMessageFormat.Json, ResponseFormat = WebMessageFormat.Json)] [return: MessageParameter(Name = "result")] List<TreeView> GetSiteMap(string node);

ListView get data on SelectedIndexChanging

Hi,I have a ListView  with aOnSelectedIndexChanging="ProductsListView_SelectedIndexChanging" and a button action<asp:LinkButton ID="SelectButton" runat="server" Text="SELECT" CommandName="Select" />This works great if i want to get the value on item in the ListView with code behind:   Sub ProductsListView_SelectedIndexChanging(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As ListViewSelectEventArgs)         Dim item As ListViewItem = CType(ProductsListView.Items(e.NewSelectedIndex), ListViewItem)        Dim myLabel As Label = CType(item.FindControl("NameLabel"), Label)        Label1.Text = myLabel.Text End SubHowever, I would like to get a value thats not on a control. So I tried this:  Sub ProductsListView_SelectedIndexChanging(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As ListViewSelectEventArgs)        Dim dataItem As ListViewDataItem = CType(ProductsListView.Items(e.NewSelectedIndex), ListViewDataItem)      &nb

Slow Data Return

Using Sharepoint 2010 and Infopath 2010 - I have a form that has a sharepoint list that it queries for data. I have tried to have it load upon opening the form and also had it query the data after it loads after something is changed. Either way it makes this form extremely slow. Frankly it is not that large a list. (484 entries of company names, address, city, state etc.....) Anyway, after reading some posts I saw a recommendation to use REST to query the list. So I set that up. I now have a secondary REST data source that loads upon form load. The issue is now that when I try to load the form I get the following error - "The amount of data that was returned by a data connection has exceeded the maximum limit that was configured by the server administrator". So I am looking for some advice as well as some instruction. First - is REST better, worse, the same as far a response time? 1. Using the traditional query list as a secondary source using a regular data source connection for this size list should I be getting this kind of poor response? My form is using some cascading dropdowns and some query rules. 2. If REST is the way to go, how do I overcome the error message I am getting? Thanks

Help Getting ListView To Display Data

I have years of Java experience but am new to .NET development.  I am currently working with C# and Microsoft Visual C# 2008.  Everything has been going well accept for one snag.  I can't get a ListView to display anything.  I've now spent hours on it and it seems I just don't get it.  Below is a sample program of my problem.  I am constructing the ListView in the Form constructor.  It's supposed to have 2 groups with 2 items, but when I run the program, the ListView is empty.  I've played around with trying different view types, but to no avail.  I've reduced it to the bare minimum and still don't get it.  What am I missing? using System; using System.Collections.Generic; using System.ComponentModel; using System.Data; using System.Drawing; using System.Linq; using System.Text; using System.Windows.Forms; namespace DemoFormApp { public partial class Form1 : Form { public Form1() { InitializeComponent(); ListViewGroup group1 = new ListViewGroup("Group One"); ListViewGroup group2 = new ListViewGroup("Group Two"); ListViewItem item1 = new ListViewItem("ABC"); ListViewItem item2 = new ListViewItem("CD"); group1.Items.Add(item1); group2.Items.Add(item2); listView1.Groups.Add(group1); listView1.Groups.Add(group

Listview Toggle Visibility of a Textbox based on Data Not Null.

I want to toggle a Textbox to be visible (true, false) contained within an InsertItemTemplate based on the data being Null/Empty.   It Works in the Item Template since it is calling the "select parameters", but once it is in the "insert parameters" on databinds, I am unable to get this to work.  <%# String.IsNullOrEmpty(Convert.ToString(Eval("qu_8")))?Convert.ToBoolean("false"):Convert.ToBoolean("true") %> (works in Item Templates, but not in InsertItemTemplate to toggle a textbox to be visible or not visible). I am using C# in code behind. Thanks in advance -Mark

Exception caused by DataPager.SetPageProperties() on ListView (postback error)

 Hi, I have a issue with drives me crazy! I'm using the DataPager method SetPageProperties() to restore the current page in my listview after I navigated into a page related to a listview item. (I persist the current page in the session state) I display 10 items at a time, and there are 10 pages. Everything works perfectly for the first 100 items, .... but after I go beyond (to display pages 11 to 20), if I call SetPageProperties() to restore the proper "current" page, I cannot submit anymore anything without getting the following exception: An error has occurred because a control with id 'ctl00$ctl00$ContentPlaceHolder$ContentPlaceHolder1$m_ListViewSearchItems$lvProductsPager$ctl00$ctl10' could not be located or a different control is assigned to the same ID after postback. If the ID is not assigned, explicitly set the ID property of controls that raise postback events to avoid this error. The exception refers to the DataPager sub-controls which are not rendered the same way for first pages (1 - 10) than (11 - 21); Is that because it expect then a "previous page" button? I don't quite know what to think about it. Does anyone have a clue?

No Return Type for a Stored Procedure in a Linq to SQL Data Layer

Hello. First, I don't know if this is the right forum section to post this in, but I couldn't fine a more suitable one. Feel free to move this if it's totally worng. I have a weird problem when using LINQ to SQL and Store Procedures with a return value... The problem is that when I drag my SP's onto the "Methods Pane" the property field "Return Type" is set to (None) and greyed out. And here's the most weird thing... I created a test SP yesterday wich returned SCOPE_IDENTITY() and it worked flawlessly. Dragged it onto the "Methods Pane", could play with the return type property (hence it was not greyed out) and everything was working out nice. I used a ISingleResult<T> and could fetch the .ReturnValue... Today I was going to contiune to create the rest of the SP's i needed with a return type but today when I drag my Store Procedures to my Methods Pane, I couldn't access the Return Type property... I even dragged the SAME procedure I used yesterday (wich then worked great) and now I can't get the dbml-layer to notice that there is a return value... I've tried to create new solutions, new Data Layers, used different databases/servers, but still the same problem... Don't really know if it's LINQ or something else that's causing this... This is how part of my SP wich I used yesterday to test looks
