Posted By:      Posted Date: May 22, 2011    Points: 0   Category :Windows Application

Hi All,

If I want to develop a commercial desktop app and I want to have the database store locally with the app (say in a folder called  data/).  Should I use SQLCE or SQL Express? I am considering portable app down the road and I would like to support single to mutiple users without making a major changes to the codes.  Any ideas or suggestions is much appreciated.

Can't connect to local database file .mdf using SQL Server Authentication?

Using  - Visual Studio 2005 Professional, SQL Server 2005 Express, WinForms App

Problem - I am unable to connect to SQL Server local Database file (.mdf) through  SQL Server Authentication.

Description -

I am addding a SQL Database file (local) in the c# winapp solution by right-click -> add new item -> SQL database file.

It adds the file, starts a wizard to create datasets and tableAdapters. Dataset files (.xsd) are created in solution. In the Data Connection pane along ToolBox we can see Database1.mdf.

When i right click on databse1.mdf -> Modify Connection.

It shows a form with Test Connection option. The connection gets tested for Windows Auth. But for SQL Server Auth it shows following error message -

When User Instance = True

Error 1 "Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server. Only an integrated sonnection can generate a user instance. The connection will be closed"

When i set User Instance = False it shows this message -

Error 2 "An Attemp to attach an auto-named database for file C:\Doc&Sett\Admin\MyDocs\VS2005\Projects\SamApp\SamApp\Database1.mdf failed. A database with the same name

The trick to force Webmatrix to create the MySQL database install scripts on my local box?

 Here is why I ask:

I've found a Webmatrix help article that says MS Webmatrix "publishes the (SQL Server or MySQL) database by creating scripts that run in a database that has been created for you by your hosting provider." That is wonderful, except I can't get it to work when I'm trying to publish a MySQL database (backing wordpress) through FTP (my hosting provider does not support 'web deploy'). Again, no problem, since it is already documented that " FTP protocols cannot be used to publish MySQL database. "

But this does not excuse Webmatrix from generating MySQL database install scripts for me. During the publishing step, no database install script is generated - at least that I can tell - and there is no manual option to create a database export / backup / install script.

In short, as Webmatrix goes, I'm dead in the water trying to get my database uploaded to my hosting provider. Does anyone know the trick to force Webmatrix to create the MySQL database install scripts on my local box? Once created, I can take-over the upload and install process.

Local database cache automatic synch

I have an application which utilizes a local database cache to synchronize bidirectional changes between the client and the server. Most of the changes occur at the client level, so most of the changes are being synchronized from the client to the server. In my usage case, the clients are connected 99% of the time, and the local cache is just a safety net to avoid accidental disconnection from the server because the clients are often connected wirelesly. I am currently synchronizing the databases every time the client adds new data (it really is not as bad as it may sound given the exact use of the program), but this is very inefficient and causes a momentary lag in the program as the data is synchronized. Is there a way automatically propogate the data to both the client and the server so that I don't have to run the sync when the client is actively connected? or does it actually do this already and I am just duplicating something that already exists?

Multiple database support with Entity Framework

One of the features introduced in Entity Framework is being database independent. Which mean each database provider can support Entity Framework by implementing its provider.

This feature allows you build applications independent from the underplaying database provider. In this post I'm going to show how to build an application that support multiple databases using same conceptual model made by Entity Framework.

Export Visio Database Table Names to Excel

If you use the Enterprise Architect edition of Microsoft Visio for data modeling regularly, then there is a good chance that at some point you've wanted to export just the table names into Excel. You might want to do this to map logical ERD entities to physical data model tables, track project status by entity, or track overlap between database versions.

MS SQL Server: Disconnect Users From Database - Kill User Session

If you ever wanted to restore your database from a SQL backup file (.bak), but there are still users connected to your database, the backup operation will fail causing the error: Exclusive access could not be obtained because the database is in use.

Local variable scoping in C#

In my previous post, Compiler-generated scopes for local variable declarations, I briefly touched on the issue of multiple meanings applied to the same name. In this post, I'll aim to flush out the compiler's rules with regards to binding names in their local scopes.
