Creating My Site collection on new web app causes web part errors

Posted By:      Posted Date: May 22, 2011    Points: 0   Category :C#

I'm configuring a brand new SharePoint 2010 Enterprise instance for the first time.  We have 2 WFE, 1 app server and 1 DB server.  Having read it is best practice, I created a new web application for My Sites.  I chose to use the same IIS site and IP address as the main SharePoint site collection but a different host header (my.sharepoint).  The problem I've come against is that opening http://my.sharepoint from any location except the application server throws a bunch of web part errors.  (Web Part Error: This page has encountered a critical error. Contact your system administrator if this problem persists.)  However, when I open the site from the application server box, I don't get the errors.  I think the problem has to do with the WFEs.  I'm seeing a bunch of DCOM errors on the WFEs complaining about security but I don't know if that is related or how to change the security of the DCOM components, the buttons are greyed out.

Can anybody help me start trouble shooting this?

Creating a new root Site Collection using a custom site definition file (ONET.XML)

Using Powershell, I am trying to deploy the our custom solution to SP 2010.  The script is doing the following: Deleting the web application using Remove-SPWebApplication Creating a new web application using New-SPWebApplication Adding and deploying a series of WSP files (one of which has the site definition file in it) using Add-SPSolution and Install-SPSolution Create a root site collection based on the site definition file provided in the WSPs using New-SPSite I get the error "WARNING: Template is not found and is not applied." When I run Get-SPWebTemplate, my site definition does not show up. I saw this: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/sharepoint2010general/thread/5ea46e07-a4b0-4bab-b698-9b6eeb695607 but I want a solution that does not involve me reloading a DLL, as, I feel there is something else I am forgetting. I have also tried: IISReset Resetting the timer service Cleaning the Cache (as described here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/939308) Nothing seems to work.  Does anyone have any ideas?

Issue with Picture Library Slideshow Web Part after export/import of site collection (SP2010)

I recently exported/imported an SP2010 site collection from Dev to Prod. The site collection had about 90 sites, which were all driven from a site template. Once the export/import had taken place, I created an additional 15 sites (in Prod), using the original site template that was created in the Dev environment. Everything seemed to be working just fine, but I found an issue with the Picture Library Slideshow Web Parts (PLSWP) on all the sites that were created in Prod. Basically, I have a Picture Library, and any pictures added to this library show up in the PLSWP. The original 80 site's PLSWP works fine, but the new 15 sites will not show the pictures through the PLSWP (the viewer just shows up blank). Here is the difference in the html output of the picture viewer:

Protected Sub btnCreate_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As EventArgs) Handles btnCreate.Click

Creating Site Collection in Existing Content Database

Hi All,

I'm trying to create a site collection in a existing content database. I haven't found a method in Sharepoint object model to perform such a action. There is an option to create a site collection in a new database using the following command:
SPSiteCollection.Add(url, siteDescription, siteDescription, 1033, siteTemplate,
                                                                siteCollPrimaryAdmin.LoginName, siteCollPrimaryAdmin.Name, siteCollPrimaryAdmin.Email,
                                                                siteCollSecondaryAdmin.LoginName, siteCollSecondaryAdmin.Name, siteCollSecondaryAdmin.Email,
                                                                strSQLServerName, siteContentDBName, null, null);

Is there a different object to do this creation on existing database? Any ideas to approach this problem will be greatly appreciated

SharePoint Application and Site Pages - Part 1 of 2

In this first part of the two part series, Steven covers the differences between Site and Application pages in SharePoint 2007, why each may be used in various circumstances, and prepares for the construction of a menu located application page. After a brief introduction he examines the concept of Site Pages and Application Pages separately in detail with supported screenshots.

SharePoint Application and Site Pages - Part 2 of 2

As the second article in a two part series, Steven examines the attributes and details of a SharePoint 2007 application page, including the construction and feature deployment of the same page based project. Since this is a WSS level objective, as opposed to MOSS, you will not need MOSS to work with the code included in this project. Windows Server 2003, WSS, and Visual Studio 2005 are all that is needed, with no additional add-ons. He provides a detailed analysis of each step involved in the creation and deployment of the project.

Creating a Basic SharePoint Web Part

This programming task includes the steps for creating a basic custom Windows SharePoint Services Web Part. It is a simple Web Part that allows you to change the Web Part's Title property, which is a Windows SharePoint Services WebPart base class property that sets the text in the title bar of the Web Part.

Garbage Collection-Part 2: Automatic Memory Management in the Microsoft .NET Framework

The first part of this two-part article explained how the garbage collection algorithm works, how resources can clean up properly when the garbage collector decides to free a resource's memory, and how to force an object to clean up when it is freed. The conclusion of this series explains strong and weak object references that help to manage memory for large objects, as well as object generations and how they improve performance. In addition, the use of methods and properties for controlling garbage collection, resources for monitoring collection performance, and garbage collection for multithreaded applications are covered.
