What port need to be open for outbound mail sendings?

Posted By:      Posted Date: May 22, 2011    Points: 0   Category :C#

Hello.

I have two branches. In one of the branches in DMZ i have MailRelay(SMTP Server) what manages mail traffic. In anothet branch i have, only Domain Controller, SharePoint Server and SQL Server dedicated for SharePoint. Now i need to set SharePoint Server for be able to send mail to Internet(Outside the branch). For this purpose i want to configure in Outgoing E-Mail Settings in Central Administration Mail Relay, that is in my other branch. My problem is, that these two branches have not direct Lan connection and each time i need to open, let's say HTTP or HTTPS between them, i have to open in FireWall port 80 and 443.

So my question now is: what port i need to open in FireWall in first branch for SharePoint be able to Connect to MailRelay(SMTP Server). In another words, by what port SharePoint talks with SMTP Server?

Thanks.

Why is the "System" Process opening and keeping the port open for my .NET remoting framework applica

I'm using Remoting in a .NET 3.5 framework application of mine (running on windows 2008 r2). I'm opening port 8086 with the following code

BinaryServerFormatterSinkProvider serverProv = new BinaryServerFormatterSinkProvider();
      serverProv.TypeFilterLevel = System.Runtime.Serialization.Formatters.TypeFilterLevel.Full;

      BinaryClientFormatterSinkProvider clientProv = new BinaryClientFormatterSinkProvider();
      IDictionary props = new Hashtable();

      try
      {
        props["port"] = 8086
        TcpChannel channel = new TcpChannel(props, clientProv, serverProv);
        ChannelServices.RegisterChannel(channel, false);
        RemotingConfiguration.RegisterWellKnownServiceType(
          typeof(Remote), "Remote", WellKnownObjectMode.Singleton);
      }
      catch (Exception ex)
      {
        logger.Error("Failed to intialize service remoting: ", ex);
        throw;
      }

For some reason, when i restart my windows service that has the above code running, it throws an exception saying that "Only one usage of each socket address (protocol/network address/port) is normally permitted". Digging into this a little deaper it turns out that "System" process is holding on to my port and it won't let it go. Even if i kill my process, the "System" process still owns the port.

.NET bug or my fault?: Serial port fail to open from C# because spoolsv.exe and my application try t

Dear all,
after browsing around I could not find any answer to my issue.

I'm writing a program in C# to access a serial device. The serial device comes with a legacy DLL probably written in C++ that provides an OpenDevice (which I call via DLLImport). The device is connected to a USB port via a Prolific USB to serial converter.
My problem is that 1 out of 5 times, the OpenDevice fails when I run my application. I have workaround to call it until it succeeds and it never goes beyond 3 or 4 tries.
By monitoring the serial port with Portmon I noticed that:
1) when running the application in debug mode from Visual studio the Com port is open from my process (MyApplication.EXE)
2) when running from windows the Com port communication belongs to windows print spooler service (spoolsv.exe) but Portmon also tracks an open command from MyApplication.EXE and here the collision happens: I'm suprised to see that the main communication from MyApplication is managed by spoolsv.exe so it is not just spoolsv.exe running in the background: I'm calling it!
3) the demo software from the supplier uses the same DLL but it is written in C++ and when I run it, spoolsv.exe does not show up (and open port never fails!)

I do not understand what is the trigger that makes the calls going through spoolsv.exe or directly to the port and

Hello good people,

I have this beast as an error. Did my research and found some posts here as well but did not do any good for me.

Here is what I did. I had an error regarding issue rights with COM objects so I gave access rights under component services for Microsoft Excel application now I am getting this error.

Here is some information regarding this

1. Gave rights to ASPNET and network service to my web app directory to try to fix this error.

2. The exact same process works on my Windows 2003 server and my Windows 7 development machine. I am trying to get this going on a different windows 2003 machine that is outside of our domain.

3. Developing on windows 7 64 bit with office 2010 installed. Also excel 2010 is installed on my Web server

4. Here is the code that is causing the error: The last line is causing the error.:

GC.Collect();
            MyXl = new Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.Application();
            MyXl.Visible = false;

            MyWb = (Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel._Workbook)(MyXl.Workbooks.Add(Missing.Value));
            int test = 0;
            MySheet = (Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel._Worksheet)MyXl.ActiveSheet;
            if (reader.HasRows)
            {
                int InRow = 2;

Email Help (System.Net.Mail)

Hi I have a annoying problem.
I have created a page which takes users details for a quote.

I have then created the form to be emailed to both the user and myself. (Which works fine ATM)

However I would also like to be able to attach a file containing terms and conditions to the email.

I have tried doing this using

EmailMsg.Attachments.Add(new Attachment("C:\\attachme.txt"));

But everytime that line of code is hit it fails and is caught by my try catch.

Take that line out and the email sends fine, put it in and it breaks the whole page.

Am I missing something really obvious?
