I am hosting a dev environment on the cloud (this includes a domain controller). The cloud provider, Opsource, provides local storage and also the option to provide additional storage (not local). Anyway, this DC is also the only DNS server on the environment.
I want to have some resilience in my environment so if the DC goes down, another is availble as a backup. This sounds like a secondary-domain controller where changes are replicated to. However, is this my only option? What else can I do to implement resilience?
Also, the environment is on VMWare ESX (all the servers are virtual), so I am assuming that backing up and restoring the DC will screw up USNs? The company (Opsource) plans to have the option to backup the VM (VMDK + vmx files) to its file service. Can a
VMDK of a DC be restored without screwing up USNs or is it just when the image of the OS is restored that this happens?
