Implementing some form of fault tolerance on a domain (controller) in the cloud

Posted By:      Posted Date: May 22, 2011    Points: 0   Category :C#

Hi,

I am hosting a dev environment on the cloud (this includes a domain controller). The cloud provider, Opsource, provides local storage and also the option to provide additional storage (not local). Anyway, this DC is also the only DNS server on the environment.

I want to have some resilience in my environment so if the DC goes down, another is availble as a backup. This sounds like a secondary-domain controller where changes are replicated to. However, is this my only option? What else can I do to implement resilience?

Also, the environment is on VMWare ESX (all the servers are virtual), so I am assuming that backing up and restoring the DC will screw up USNs? The company (Opsource) plans to have the option to backup the VM (VMDK + vmx files) to its file service. Can a VMDK of a DC be restored without screwing up USNs or is it just when the image of the OS is restored that this happens?

Thanks

WCF DeadLetterQueue Service fault tolerance

Hi

I developed WCF DeadletterQueue service to handle fault tolerance. This service picks up messages from deadletterqueue and sends them to a different endpoint. Now problem is, even though this new endpoint is also down, deadletterqueue service puts the message into journel (means marks it processed), at the other end, the message remains in the queue of new end point. This hurts reliability of WCF MSMQ, client thinks that he submitted message but as service is down, message lies in the queue without processed. I tried to specify a CustomDeadletterQueue in the client configuration of this DeadletterQueue service, and pointed that customdeadletterqueue to the same deadletter queue the service is working for. But it doesn't work out.

Appreciate if any idea or solution.

How to make a MVC controller redirect to a web form page?

I am asked to build a MVC page on top of a existing web form site. I need to let the controller return a web form page instead of a view page. Is there any way I could achieve this?

Access SQL Server when a domain controller isn't available

I have one environment where the Client and Server are part of a workgroup.  The Client can access SQL Server 2008 as long as the Client has the same local account (same username and password) on both the Client and and Server.

At home I have a physical SBS 2k3 Server acting as my domain controller.  I have a virtual Win7 Client and virtual Win2k8 R2 Server which are both part of my domain.  While connected to the domain, I can access the SQL Server 2008 R2 instance on the virtual Win2k8 Server from the virtual Win7 Client with no problem.  I log on to both virtual machines using the same domain account.  What I want to know is if there's a way I can set things up so that I can connect to SQL Server on the virtual Win2k8 Server even when my domain controller is unavailable.  (Sometimes due to noise and heat issues I don't have my SBS 2k3 server booted up).  Ideally I'd like to be able to do this with domain accounts.  I can log into the Client and Server machines even if the DC isn't available it's just connecting to SQL Server that becomes a problem.

DeadLetterQueue service fault tolerance not working

I developed WCF DeadletterQueue service to handle fault tolerance. This service picks up messages from deadletterqueue and sends them to a different endpoint. Now problem is, even though this new endpoint is also down, deadletterqueue service puts the message into journel (means marks it processed), at the other end, the message remains in the queue of new end point. This hurts reliability of WCF MSMQ, client thinks that he submitted message but as service is down, message lies in the queue without processed. Thanks in advance.

The trust relationship between SharePoint 2007 Server and Domain Controller failed after virtual ima

Hi,

I failed to login to my SharePoint Server 2007 since the virtual image is cloned. The trust relationship between the MOSS and DC failed since the duplication of SID occurred. I tried to unjoin and re-join the Windows Server 2008 but the server just stays at "Applying Computer Setting..." after server reboot.

Thank you for your advice in advance!

Later:

How to fix the trust relationship between the SharePoint Server(Windows Server 2008) and DC (Windows Server 2003)?

Which Domain Controller is SQL Server using for trusted windows authentication?

We are migrating from Windows Server 2003 domain controllers to Server 2008 Domain controllers.  I want to be able to know which domain controller a SQL server is using for authentication, so I can verify that the 2008 Domain Controllers are working, before we take down the 2003 domain controllers permanently.

I also read something about possibly setting a preferred DC?

Please advise

Implementing Continuous Scrolling UI Pattern in ASP.NET

When you have numerous records to show, we have to resort to Paging. There is a better alternative to display voluminous data (especially read only data) while providing a better user experience & also making efficient use of server bandwidth - the Continuous Scrolling or Infinite Scrolling UI Pattern. Read on to know more about how to implement Continuous Scrolling UI Pattern in ASP.NET with a GridView.

Model View Controller (MVC) for ASP.NET

Model View Controller (MVC) architectures, immediately wonder how the MVC pattern can be applied in an ASP.NET world. This article will demonstrate how the MVC pattern can be applied to an ASP.NET web application and still maintain the basic Microsoft supplied architecture.

JQuery Validate plugin to validate a ASP.NET Form

The first time I used the JQuery Validate plugin, it did not work at all, see JQuery Validate odd behaviour with the ASP.NET Script Manager for reason, but perseverance and stubbornness prevailed and I finally created my first JQuery validated ASP.NET Forms contact form.

How to use getElementById to get the elements in a form

There are many ways of accessing form elements, of which the easiest is by using the cross-browser W3C DOM document.getElementById method. Before we learn more about this method, it would be useful to know something about the Document Object Model (DOM), the concept of HTML nodes or elements, and the concept of containers.

Each time you load an HTML page, the web browser generates an internal representation of the page in the form of an inverted tree structure. Let us look at a simple form. We will use this form later to demonstrate the use of the getElementById method.

form feild hints are not displaying for textboxses inside create user wizard?

Hi,

I'm using following JS code to display input hint box besides the textbox whenever that asp.net textbox receives focus.

I'm doing this for a registration form and all of the textboxes are inside the asp.net create user wizard control.

<script type="text/javascript">
function addLoadEvent(func) {
  var oldonload = window.onload;
  if (typeof window.onload != 'function') {
    window.onload = func;
  } else {
    window.onload = function() {
      oldonload();
      func();
    }
  }
}

function prepareInputsForHints() {
	var inputs = document.getElementsByTagName("TextBox");
	for (var i=0; i<inputs.length; i++){
		// test to see if the hint span exists first
		if (inputs[i].parentNode.getElementsByTagName("span")[0]) {
			// the span exists! on focus, show the hint
			inputs[i].onfocus = function () {
				this.parentNode.getElementsByTagName("span")[0].style.display = "inline";
			}
			// when the cursor moves away from the field, hide the hint
			inputs[i].onblur = function () {
				this.parentNode.getElementsByTagName("span")[0].style.display = "none";
			}
		}
	}
addLoadEvent(prepareInputsForHints);
</script>
span.

AutoGenerateSelectButton="False" ignored when using Domain Service

Crosspost from RIA Services forum: http://forums.silverlight.net/forums/t/196466.aspx

I'm creating a Dynamic Data application in VS2010 and have recently switched to using a Domain Service to give greater control over the data presented to the client. I've noticed that the AutoGenerate<Action>Button attributes on my GridView are being ignored. The presence of the Edit and Delete buttons appear to be contingent on the existence of Update and Delete methods on the partial classes autogenerated in the Domain Service, but i'm not seeing how to control the generation of the Select button. Is there a way to control this from within the Domain Service class?

Dynamic Data, Domain datasource, Poco and lookups

Mr. Edward,

Excuse my question but: it is necessary to involve in our projects something more than just Dynamic Data or should we make use of all other features available in VS2010 (which will make assume taht they had been left out of the Dynamic Data framework) like: wef, poco, azure, wcf, cloud, mvc, silverllight, ajax, odata, agile, workflow, etc.?

Sorry my ignorance, I'm just transcribing names as they come to my mind and of which I don't know anything about
