How to make document libraries read-only. How to block users to not able to upload or create new doc

Posted By:      Posted Date: May 22, 2011    Points: 0   Category :C#

We are planning to perform a backward migration from MOSS 2007 to WSS3.0 on one of our sharepoint farms. For this migration we like to disable the users to modify the existing doc-libraries or invidual documents. We also want to restrict the users from creating new document-libraries or upload new documents onto sharepoint sites.

Can somebody tell if there is a way to accomplish this either by using GUI or SharePoint API ?

Thanks ahead.

Users (even site collection administrator) unable to see minor versions in document libraries

I have document libraries with the following settings: major & minor versioning enabled, checkout required & 'only users who can edit items' can see draft (minor) items. The problem is when a user uploads a document (the first document), the library appears empty. However, looking at the summary in 'view all site content' we see that the number of items in the list has incremented by 1. Typically, if the user selects explorer view they can also see the document they just uploaded.

Similar behaviour occurs using the 'New document' option. Before checking in the document for this first time it is visible in the library. If it is checked in as v 0.1 it 'disappears' if it is checked in as v 1.0 it is visible.

I have noticed that if I toggle the Draft Item Security setting by setting it to 'any user who can read items' then set it back immediately to 'only users who can edit items' that the previously hidden items become visible. And any new minor versions created subsequently are also displayed correctly. I can of course do this for existing libraries, but if new libraries are created based on my template this behaviour reoccurs.

Has anyone seen this before?

Blocking Edit Document for Read only users in SharePoint 2007

I'm trying to create a group in one of my sites that is Read only - truly read only.  Seems no matter what I do, the users can click on Edit Document, check out, check in, and the document is changed.  It doesn't show as changed in the Modified or Modified By columns, but the changes I make to test are there.  How do I create a group that can open a document, but can NOT check it out, can NOT Edit Document, and then check it back in?

How do I create an Upload.aspx link on the front page of my document library without the subsequent

I need to create an Upload.aspx link on the front page of my document library, rather than rely on the + Add Document link at the bottom of the list.

When I copy the URL of the Add Document link to my page or as a quick link it uploads the file, brings up the metadata form, but then asks the user to save the file on save.

Clicking on the + Add Document link does a clean upload without the reuest to save the file?

The link I create has the format "_Layouts/Upload.aspx?List={ABC123}&RootFolder=tFolder="

Is there some parameter to Upload.aspx? that I need to add?

Create an "Upload a Document" button web part in other document libaries

I am trying to create an "Upload a Document" button in a SharePoint document library using the code from the Document Center landing page in order to display the upload form.

I have added a content editor web part in a different document library and edited the path to the document library but I find the button action does not work.

<div class="ms-uploadbtnlink"><button onclick="javascript:OpenNewFormUrl(&#39;Documents /Forms/upload.aspx&#39;);return false;" type="submit"><nobr><img alt="Upload a Document" src="/_layouts/Images/uploaddoc.png"/>&#160;<span>Upload a Document</span></nobr></button> </div>

Is there something I am missing, is this not as simple as it seems?

Working with SharePoint document libraries

Document libraries are collections of files that you can share with team members on a Web based on Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services. For example, you can create a library of common documents for a project, and team members can use their Web browsers to find the files, read them, and make comments. Users with Microsoft Office 2003 can check out and edit the files as if they resided on a local or network drive.

By default, your team Web site comes with a built-in document library named Shared Documents, which is listed on the Quick Launch bar as well as on the Documents and Lists page.

Upload a File to a SharePoint Document Library - Part I

The following helper class demonstrates a few techniques that allow documents to be uploaded to a SharePoint document library programmatically without using the API or a custom web service. You don't need to specify a document library name, and it will create any folders specified in the URL as required. File meta data will be updated if any properties are passed.

Large document libraries with a custom user interface

We recently migrated our document management system to SharePoint (WSS 3.0) and I adapted my VB6 client application to search for and retrieve a list of documents from this new SharePoint library using the Lists web service. Although the total number of documents in this library is 90,000 at one site and over 145,000 at another, my VB6 application never retrieves more than 600-700 documents at a time. From reading white papers such as "Working with Large Lists in Office SharePoint Server 2007" (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=95450&clcid=0x409), it appears that if my custom user interface limits the number of items returned in a search of these large lists, that it may not be necessary to put these documents into folders. However, our current scanning software, KnowledgeLake Capture, by default places newly scanned documents into folders based on the year, month, day and hour, which means that these documents are placed in nested folders 4 levels deep.

There are also some 20 metadata fields on these document libraries that allow us to filter these document libraries so that search results will in most cases be limited to a few hundred items.

We acquired new servers (Windows Server 2008 with SQL Server 2008) to host our SharePoint libraries and we are running WSS 3.0 S

Check-out issue when opening a document from a document library when a read-only copy is open

We have an issue when a user has a read-only copy of a document from SharePoint open and then tries to check-out and edit another copy of the document (i.e. from the document library) the checked out copy is not connected to the web server. For the user it will look the same they will make edits, save and then close, but when they do so the document is not updated in SharePoint - it may be saved locally in their SP drafts, but the user will think that they have lost their version. We then get the checked out to another user error and you have to discard changes to get the document working again. Steps to reproduce this issue: * click on the name of a office doc on a Document Library * Make sure "Read Only" is selected and click "ok" * Minimize open document * click on the same file on the Document Library * Make sure "check out and edit" is selected and the "Use my local drafts folder" checkbox is ticked. Select OK. * Edit document and press save. Changes are never saved back in SharePoint, they are only on the local draft. We are using MOSS with SP2. Clients are on Office 2003 and 2007 Is this normal behaviour? Is there anything that can be done to prevent this from happening?

Make MetaData READ ONLY

I want to make the metadata of a document set to read only. The business idea is that when the document is created the first time, it is modifyable. However, few years down the line when the document comes up for revision, we want the metadata columns to be set to read only.
