A couple of new open source releases from yours truly

Posted By: Chris Hammond     Posted Date: May 22, 2011    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net

Over the past few weeks I've been feeling awful open source like. We come from an open source background, and we, DotNetNuke Corporation, are still very very committed to stick with those roots. So I put together a couple of releases for projects I work on, and created a new project as well. Read the full blog post to find out about Wiki Module v4.5 almost ready for Release The World's Best Free DotNetNuke Skin An Update to the DNNSimpleArticle Module DotNetNuke World ...(read more)

Best Practices for extending an Open Source project

I am beginning an implementation and customization of an open source e-commerce application (nopCommerce).  I'm looking for any for any suggestions and / or recommendations to annotate or document any source code changes I would make in order to allow for the easiest integration of new versions of the application that are released. I do have TFS 2010 implemented but I do not have much experience with the product.  I tried to merge the source of a new release but ran into some difficulty, especially when files were deleted from the project. For much of the project I can copy existing user controls and create custom versions for my use, but there will be some modification of the actual source code required. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Is RDL an Open Source

Is RDL (the XML representation of Report Structure) an Open Source. Could it be used in a custom reporting software?  Actually we are developing a custom reporting tool right from the scratch using .net. But I would like to borrow the RDL technique used by SSRS as it is flexible. Could it be done without getting into any copyright issues?

Data Source Library won't open / grayed out

Hello!

I saw a similar question but the answers didn't solve my problem so here it goes.  I have a site, and many subsites underneath.  For all of them it says I'm owner/full control.  They even gave me control of the site above mine so I could have permission to do a lot of things on my sites.  Ok well every site works the same.  I open them in SharePoint Designer and can insert data view and see the data sources under the "current site".

However, this one site i have says "current site" in the data source library tab, but it is grayed out and I can't expand it.  My IT contact has no idea what's wrong since I have full permission to all these sites.  I can add webparts through sharepoint designer to this site, I just can't add data views (and I really need data views for what I'm doing).

This is a site that's been around for a bit but this is the first time I started using it to insert data views.  Unfortunately it's a live site so I can't just delete/recreate as other things on the site are currently in use and going through workflows.

Any suggestions are appreciated!  Where can I look?  What should I check?

Thanks so much!

ASP.NET newbie - any good open source control packs?

As an ASP.NET newbie I'm trying to get an initial project going without laying out huge sums for advanced visual components. Can anybody recommend any good open source control libraries for ASP.NET?   Something that includes a table, tree, calendar, and the usual mix of input/display controls.

Running Open Source In A Distributed World

When it comes to running an open source project, the book Producing Open Source Software - How to Run a Successful Free Software Project by Karl Fogel (free pdf available ) is my bible (see my review and summary of the book ). The book is based on Karl Fogel's experiences as the leader of the Subversion project and has heavily influenced how I run the projects I'm involved in. Lately though, I've noticed one problem with some of his advice. It's so Subversion-y. Take a look at this snippet on Committers. As the only formally distinct class of people found in all open source projects, committers deserve special attention here. Committers are an unavoidable concession to discrimination in a system which is otherwise as non-discriminatory as possible...(read more)

Microsoft StyleCop: Source Code Analyzer for C#

StyleCop is similar in many ways to Microsoft Code Analysis (specifically FxCop), but there are some important distinctions. FxCop performs its analysis on compiled binaries, while StyleCop analyzes the source code directly. For this reason, FxCop focuses more on the design of the code, while StyleCop focuses on layout, readability and documentation. Most of that information is stripped away during the compilation process, and thus cannot be analyzed by FxCop.

C# and XML Source Code Documentation

Through many years of enterprise level software development and consulting, I became critically aware of the importance of good source code documentation, and several years ago when I began working with the first release of Visual Studio .NET beta 1 and found C# provided built-in support for inline XML code documentation, I was thrilled.

abstract away the source of the connection string using a class with a static property.

ASP.NET provides a configuration system we can use to keep our applications flexible at runtime. In this article we will examine some tips and best practices for using the configuration system for the best results.

The element of a web.config file is a place to store connection strings, server names, file paths, and other miscellaneous settings needed by an application to perform work. The items inside appSettings are items that need to be configurable depending upon the environment, for instance, any database connection strings will change as you move your application from a testing and staging server into production.

Encapsulation
Let's abstract away the source of the connection string using a class with a static property.

Formview LinqData source not allowing updates

OK, I'm confused.  I've set up a formview with a Linqdata source to allow users to edit records.  When I run it, edit data and submit, it blows up and tells me "Linq datasource6  does not support the Select property when the Delete, Insert or Update operations are enabled."  I googled that warning and saw a couple of posts on this forum saying the problem is the slect statement has to be removed from the Linq data source for it to allow updates.

But if I remove the select statement then how do I show the user specific info on pageload?   plus I thought the two way databind was an advantge of the datasource control.
