Web Migration: Moving Your Web App from WebMatrix to ASP.NET MVC 3

Posted By:      Posted Date: May 22, 2011    Points: 0   Category :ASP.Net

The Web Pages page-centric programming model supported by WebMatrix is a great way to get Web apps up and running. If you later decide that embracing ASP.NET MVC would give you more flexibility, you're covered. We'll explain why you might choose to migrate and show you how to do it.

Moving MOSS 2007 from 2x Dedicated servers to 1x VM - Migration Tutorials?

Greetings all,

We're recently phased out our MOSS 2007 environment (after migrating to MOSS 2010), and need to reclaim the servers from our 2007 install. However, we need to provide access to the old 2007 environment for 9-12 months more.

So, my plan is to migrate the Content DB and FE from their split-environment (two server) solution into a single VM that we can power up when needed.

Knowing that there are a great number of quality tutorials in existence for MOSS 2007, I wonder if someone might recommend tutorials/posts they've found useful for migrating the Content DB and/or FE (this is similar to a disaster-recovery situation in which the FE and DB are rebuilt, no?), beyond the TechNet articles on the matter.

Thanks for your help!

Problems moving Drupal from WebMatrix to hosting

I got the first beta of WebMatrix, downloaded Drupal, and got a site more or less going.  I then tried to move it to two different hosts - first the IIS server running on my own domain controller, then to my hosting service.  I dumped the DB with mysqldump, and imported it to the databases running on each server. Then I ftp'd the code and configuration files to both servers, and made appropriate configuration changes (primarily the mysql connect string).

On both servers I have the same problem: The site comes up in its home page and looks great, but as soon as I log in as the site admin, I get a 404 (not found) error.  Since it looks like virtually everything in Drupal is driven from the database, I really haven't the faintest idea where to start debugging this.

Can anyone give me any hints?

SharePoint document migration challenges when migrating files and folders

There are several challenges when migrating documents to Microsoft SharePoint. While these challenges can be overcome, they are a real pain if the migration source, content and file systems are not SharePoint friendly.

Webmatrix error

When i try to do anything in webmatrix it shuts down.   i get this error in the log

pplication: WebMatrix.exe

Description: The application requested process termination through System.Environment.FailFast(string message).

DatabaseHelper for WebMatrix

After some initial trouble with database editor in the beta version of Microsoft WebMatrix, I decided it would be better to create SQL scripts and run them at startup of my web-app. Perhaps the Microsoft.Data.Database helper can be extend to support similar scenarios?

Here is the code: http://www.forkcan.com/viewcode/231/DatabaseHelper-for-WebMatrix

Keyboard shortcuts stops working in WebMatrix

I'm often experiencing that keyboard shortcuts stops working in WebMatrix. This is very annoying as CTRL-S, CTRL-C, CTRL-V, etc. stops working, all of which are heavily used when programming. It's obviously hard to explain how to reproduce this, but I was wondering if someone knows a quick-fix?

WebMatrix shorthand coding?

Will there be support for shorthand statements?

@if(1==1) @: works
@else @: doesn't work

as apposed to;

    <text>doesn't work</text>

Or perhaps ternary opperators? PHP like stuff ...

WebMatrix conversion failed when converting from a character string to uniqueidentifier?

I am trying to retrieve xml from a small function in my .cshtml page. Its throwing me an error. This however, runs fine in a console/form environment.

It takes 3 parameters and 1 exception.

myDll.GetXML(year, username, uniqueidentifier, out ex);

When I run this page I get the error, "Conversion failed when converting from a character string to uniqueidentifier."

Or a stack of.

Any plans on releasing the source code for WebMatrix itself?

I tried reflecting into WebMatrix.exe but was unable.  I'm interested on how you integrated the WPF Ribbon & the Office-style sidebar.

Connecting to MS SQL Server database using webmatrix.

I am novice  user to raizor syntax using webmatrix and i am trying to connect MS Sql server database (instead of using .sdf file i am using .mdf file) using the tool webmatrix for startersite.

The connection string that i setup as follows.

<?xml version="1.0"?>

        <compilation debug="false" targetFramework="4.0" />
    <add name="OESConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=.\SQLServer2005;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|\OES_Data.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

And i am using websecurity helper as well and the setup is as follows.

WebSecurity.InitializeDatabaseConnection("Data Source=INLTE5556\\SQLServer2005;Initial Catalog=OES;Integrated Security=True", "System.Data.SqlClient", "UserProfile", "UserId", "Email", true);

When i am trying to insert the user details into database i am getting the below error.

Migration from ASP.NET 3.5 to 4.0

So, I just recently started to migrate my website from 3.5 to 4.0.   I am running in a bunch of issues but mainly 2 so far that have me stumped.

1. I have a custom URL rewrite module that I use, and it seems like it's being ignored to some extent.  It works fine if I run it through Visual Studio 2010 debugger, so I have no idea why it's not being fired.

2. In some of my pages, I reference a BasePage class instead of System.Web.UI.Page.  The ones that reference this BasePage class works fine, but when I use System.Web.UI.Page, I get : Object reference not set to an instance of an object when I try to create an object.

Any ideas?

Migration to .Net 2 and includes

I'm currently having a problem with one of our old .Net 1.1 applications. For generating the user interface, a lot of incude statements were used.

<!--#include file="includes/header.aspx"-->

In these includes, the variables from the parent files are used.

Now I have to use at least .Net 2 and Visual Studio 2010. The problem is that VS tries to compile these include files, which of course failes.

Is there any way to restore the old behavior again?

Cutting Edge: Moving DataGrid Rows Up and Down

Imagine opening your Inbox one morning and finding a message that reads "Dear Mr. DataGrid, I urgently need an ASP.NET DataGrid that lets my users move rows on the client. You're my last hope. Will you please help me?"

Controls: Plan Your Migration to the Visual Studio 2005 Navigation Controls

Navigation is central to a well functioning Web application and it can be implemented numerous ways using today's technologies. This article highlights some of the key details of the new navigation controls that are part of the upcoming ASP.NET 2.0, and talks about how to design and implement one of these navigation controls today. This article contains a simple Web site that demonstrates the use of these navigation controls, pointing out some of the key items such as a breadcrumb control and things to watch for along the way. The article then describes how to implement a breadcrumb control today.
