Compatibility issues between Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 and Windows Server 2008 R2

Posted By:      Posted Date: April 14, 2011    Points: 0   Category :

Dear sirs,

When I was installing SQL Server 2005 64 bit on Windows Server 2008 R2, I received a notice informing the software Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 has known compatibility issues with this version of Windows.

So how can I get around these problems?

I need to use Visual Studio 2005 to create the Integration Services packages.

Also, I need to migrate directories of Integration Services packages from a server with SQL Server 2005 32 bit on Windows Server 2003 32 bit for a server with SQL Server 2005 64 bit on Windows Server 2008 R2. How can I proceed to do this?

Thanks in advance.

I am just starting to work with Visual Studio 2008 (VB) to creat WPF apps and am trying to work with sql server. I want to create databases on my computer to be used with single client applications. Windows XP, Visual Studio Express 2010 and SQL Server 2008 Express - How can I save modified columns

I am using c# in VS 2010 Express. I have a MDF database that I connect to through "Database Explorer". Database Explorer will not let me SAVE columns that I have modified. As I know in SQL Server 2008 full edition you can change the setting "Prevent saving changes that require table recreation" in Management Console to prevent this. I haven't got Management Console and can't see it in install.

How do I change this setting if I haven't got management console? Is it in Registry or Config File.

Help deploying Windows Service to 64bit Server usinf Visual Studio 2008 Setup Project?

I have a Windows Service I created a while back for our Win2003/2008 32bit Servers, written in Visual Studio 2008, deployed via a VS2k8 Setup Project.  Everything works great, installs fine, and runs as it should.  There is no platform dependent code, it's all straight-up .Net Framework stuff, so we thought it should deploy to a Win2008 64bit Server just fine.  But this seems not to be the case.

When I try to install the Service as is on the 64bit machine, the service and associated DLL's are installed to the "C:\Windows\SysWOW64" folder, but when you right click the Service itself and look at the properties, it is trying to find the .exe file in the "C:\Windows\System32" folder. This difference prevents the service from running, obviously.

If I change the Setup Project settings, set the Target Platform to "x64" and change in the File System screen to use the "System (64-bit) Folder" placing the files in there and re-run the setup.exe on the server.... now the files are correctly installed to the "C:\Windows\System32" folder, but the Service itself is not 'installed', that is it *does not* show up in the Services Manager.

Just for the giggles of it I tried to manually install the service using 'installutil.exe' in the .Net Fra

Visual Studio 2008 and SQL Server 2005 SSIS packages

My home machine has sql 2005  and Visual Studio 2005 installed. I uninstalled VS 2005 (RTM) and installed VS 2008 (RTM) in its place. I then found that the SSIS templates were missing. Lesson: don't uninstall VS 2005 if you want to use SSIS 2005!

1. Is there any "workaround" to this issue?

2. (If the answer to 1 is "No") I will install VS 2008 side-by-side with VS 2005 on the same box.  When the SSIS issue is finally resolved, can I uninstall VS 2005 without doing damage to the VS 2008 install?

SQL Server Management Studio (2005) and Visual Studio 2008

Help -

I had been using SQL Management Studio, from sql server 2005, reciently I installed Visual Studio 2008 on my machine.  I use it for VB coding.  I still use the same Management studio.  It all works fine except when I try and Export or Import a table in Management Studio using the wizard.  I get the following error:

This wizard will close because it encountered the following error:

Cannot connect Visual Studio 2008 to Sql Server 2005

I have Windows 7 and installed Visual Studio 2008 Pro and also installed SQL server developer addiotion that comes with VS. After creating a test database in SQL maangement studio and adding the standard asp.net membership provider tables with the aspnet_regsql tool, I created a web project and added a connection string to the web.config file to connect to the database.

No matter what, I cannot connect to the database.

I can create a connection through the server explorer in visual studio and when I drag a sqldatasource onto my page and configure it I can connect to the database etc. But no web.config connection.

This worked on my XP pro machine but not Windows 7.

Has anybody had this problem and what am I doing wrong.

installing SQL Server 2005 on Windows 7 with Visual Studio 2010 already installed

Last year I had Vista on machine with Visual Studio 2008 and SQL Server 2005 running fine. Last week I decided to wipe the hard disk, install Windows 7 and make the move to Visual Studio 2010. I still need SQL Server 2005 to be able to test code for clients using this.

Anyway, Visual Studio 2010 Professional went on OK. This installed SQL Server 2008 Epxress.

I then try to install SQL Server 2005. I know that there is a compatibility problem, so following advice from other sources, I want to install it without running the server, then install SQL Server 2005 SP3. Then I should be up and running.

The problem is that even though I make sure the 'Start SQL Server' check box is UNchecked, part way through the installation it throws up an error saying it can't start the server and this part of the installation is unrolled.

I've tried running 'setup.exe SKUUPGRAGE=1' which gets rid of the only warning I was getting up to this point, but the setup seems to insist on running the server even though I tell it not to. So I don't get a chance to run SP3 on it.

I wonder if the problem is that SQL Server 2008 Epxress is already installed but can't see an easy way of uninstalling it. It doesn't appear as an uninstall option using the Visual Studio 2010 disk and if I look at uninstall programs I get the f
