Licencing question: SQL Svr 2000 Std Edn 32bit > SQL Svr 2008 R2 Std Edn

Posted By:      Posted Date: April 14, 2011    Points: 0   Category :

I have a client who is currently running MS SQL Server 2000 Std Edn with 5 CALs running on Windows XP Pro.
Im surprised to see this installed and running, as my understanding was that this was not possible to install on XP pro.

We are in the process of upgrading his hardware as part of a 3 yr refresh when we stumbled on the above setup.
I tried to replicate this setup in house however the installer borked during the first couple of clicks reporting Windows XP was not supported / could not install.

After a dig around several forums, it seems that this is correct, so Im left wondering how the original install was completed :-s

Moving forward we need to complete the new install within 7 days or loose his business, so after another look around I found that SQL Svr 2008 r2 Std edn x86 IS supported and will install on XP Pro SP2/3.

My question is this, If we cant replicate what he has currently (SQL 2000 Std on Windows XP Pro - Please let me know if this is possible!)
Where / How do I upgrade the existing 5x 2000 CALs to 2008 CALs and supply an additional 4 2008 CALs?

Can anyone provide an example product code and price estimate as I am getting quite confused when searching for these now, compounded by the lack of a support contact number for MS to help me.

Im based in the UK btw.

Thanks for any responses / input.

SQL Server 2000 to 2008 R2 db restore question

Hi guys

I've just restored a db (MS SQL 2000) unto MS SQL 2008. All went well and the users for that db were also created. But they were created on the db level.

On the server level, these logins were not there. I tried to create them manually at the server level. When I try to assign the login to the db it understandably says that the user with the same name already exists in the db.

I tried dropping the login created in the db level but I can't do so as there is a schema in the database with the username.

How should I go about getting the same login unto 2008 without dropping any schemas as I am trying to keep everything the same as it was in 2000 for testing purposes in 2008.

Thanks in advance.

Oracle Linked serve Query performance in 2000 vs 2008 R2 64 Bit

Hi everyone We have started to migrate one of our reporting systems from Sql 2000 to Sql 2008 R2.  One of the steps has been to test the perforance of certain Oracle linked server queries between each server.  We are finding on average 3 fold better perforance stats (in terms of query completion time) on the old server.  This should obviously not be the case.  The new server has signifantly more CPU/Memory/IO resources to play with, and it is 64 bit (not to mention its new!).  Here's what I got so far: Old server: SQL 2000 on W2000 both fully patched.  Old Dell Dual core with 3 GB of Ram running on two soft IDE Mirrored drives (yes I know... it sucks).  It connecting via the MS OLE DB provider for Oracle (9i client) New server: ESX VMware Server with 2 CPU's assigned, 8 GB of ram connected to large HP SAN.  CPU, ram and IO's have all been ruled out as the problem.  We've tried varying network cards with different results so we havent ruled that out yet.  Its connecting via the Oracle provider for OLE DB (11G 64 bit client) The linked server is an Oracle 9i fully patched server.  All three are on the same network backbone. Running a simple select * query on both servers returns the same number of rows (~76 000) .  It takes ~1:20 on the new server and ~0:20 on the old server. In looking at the wait stati

I also see al instances on the machine: PS SQLSERVER:\sql\MySS2KMachine\default> cd .. PS SQLSERVER:\sql\MySS2KMachine> dir Instance Name ------------- DEFAULT MSSQL2005 As you can see from the above, there is also a SQL Server 2005 instance installed on the MySS2KMachine. Now, if I try the same thing for a Sql Server 2000 instance on another server (Windows 2003 R2 with SP1) with no SQL Server 2005 or higher installed on the machine, I get the error below: PS SQLSERVER:\> cd sql PS SQLSERVER:\sql> cd MyPureSS2KMachine WARNING: Could not obtain SQL Server Service information. SQL Server 2008 R2 Installation and Service Pack 1 Question

I am migrating a SQL 2000 server to a SQL 2008 R2 server (on different physical servers) . When I ordered SQL Server 2008 the volume licensing allowed me to download sql server web 2008, sql server web 2008 R2 and sql server 2008 service pack 1. I don't know why I have three options to download. Don't I just need to just install the sql server 2008 Web R2? Are there any sql 2008 R2 service packs available?

Problem consuming 32bit WCF service which references a native Dll in a 64 bit OS(Windows Server 2008

I have some 32bit Dlls which i want to use it in 64bit OS as i do not have a source code of this to recompile it for 64 bit OS. I have created a x86(32 Bit) WCF service which calls these Dlls and hosted it as a Windows Service on a x64(64 Bit) machine using Windows Server 2008. I have created one more x64 client which calls a function in the WCF which in turn calls a function from the 32 bit native Dll. Whenever i try calling this WCF from the client I get an error as given below. Can anybody please guide as to where I am going wrong and what is needed to solve this issue. Thanks in advance for any help.******The Error Message********************System.BadImageFormatException: Could not load file or assembly 'TestWCFWrapper, Version=, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies.
