Wow, many posts on this but I haven't found anything that worked thus far. I am using Windows XP Pro SP3, Sql Server Express 2008 R2 with SSMS, and Visual Studio 2010 Express. I opened VWD 2010 and tried to add a connection using datasource:
Microsoft SQL Server Datbase File. I browsed to the folder "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.SQLEXPRESS\MSSQL\DATA" and selected one of the AdventureWorks DB's and tried to connect to it. I trued to log on to the server
using Windows Authentication but I got the error: Failed to generate a user instance of SQL server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. I went into SSMS and ran
'USER instances enabled'
and run_value = 1.
I read many proposed solutions that said I should delete everything in the folder with the path:
C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server Data\SQLEXPRESS .
