Query/Connection/Connect unavailable after "a transport-level error has occurred"

Posted By:      Posted Date: April 14, 2011    Points: 0   Category :

In SSMS for SQL Server 2008, when I leave a connection open overnight to a remote server, I occasionally get disconnected.  This is OK, and it's not the issue.  I know there are several reasons that can cause this, such as the remote server could have been rebooted.

The problem is that once this happens, under the Query menu item, in the Connection sub-item, the Connect item is greyed out -- so I can't try to reconnect in the same window.  I also have a Connect icon on the toolbar, and it is greyed out also.  This query window is now dead.

If I open a new query window, I can connect with no problem, but I have to copy any temporary SQL code I was working with from the now-useless original query window, into the new one.

Why would the Connect item become permanently unavailable?  SQL 2005 didn't do this.  I have installed the latest CU on SQL Server client tools (SSMS says the client tools are at 10.0.4270.0).  Client is on Windows 7 Pro x64.

Thanks for any info.

Basic ODBC Connection to connect to Crystal ???

I have visual studio 2008 professional with the inbuilt crystal reports version 10 I think.  I create everything from my laptop and IIS runs from my laptop as well.

I have created the most basic report to try and figure out a problem I have, anyways the report contains one database field that is it .... which I connect to by ODBC.  I then create a web form add the crystal report viewer to the report and the crystal report source run the web page and it loads the data from the field as I would expect to the crystal report viewer !!

I have several ODBC connections setup on my machine one using integrated security the other using SQL authentication both are system DSNs.  Now when I publish my application and access it from IIS and not the localhost I can access everything from my application ok except when I go to form that has the crystal reports I get this error (ODBC used here is the 'sa' account)

Logon failed. Details: IM002:[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Data source name not found and no default driver specified Error in File

If I use the other ODBC that uses Windows authentication I get this error message

Logon failed. Details: 42000:[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Cannot open database  requested by the login. T

Connect to an existing connection manager from within a custom transformation?

I'm developing a custom data flow transformation and have hit a roadblock.  I need to create an ADO connection to one of the connection managers that's defined in the package already.  I can either hardcode the name of the connection manager, or define it as a custom property....the problem I'm having is accessing it at all.  What I've found is that ComponentMetaData.RuntimeConnectionCollection[0].ConnectionManager only has the connection managers defined by the component itself, not already existing in the package.  How do I create a connection to a connection manager that's defined at the package level at design time? Thanks

I have a web page that contains a ReportViewer control.  I am trying to display a report, which is an .rdl file located on the SSRS server, in this ReportViewer control.  I have set the ReportPath and ReportServerUrl correctly.  I am getting an error message. Am I suppose to use an .rdlc file rather than a .rdl file?  Does the web server configuration need to use a certain account?  I am getting the following error message: The attempt to connect to the report server failed. Check your connection information and that the report server is a compatible version. The request failed with HTTP status 404: Not Found.

Query to the data connection or webservice

Dear Infopath Gurus, I am facing a problem while fetching data from a (web-based) Infopath form library, as a secondary data source. Background: I have connected text-boxes on the form with a form library (secondary source), these text boxes are suppose to fetch values from the associated columns (dynamic in nature) and display it on the web form. But whenever I reopen the form, these text boxes do not fetch or display the updated values in the columns. The temporary solution that I applied was, applying a rule (Query using a data connection) whenever a form opens/loads. This solution was bringing the updated values alright but as the number of forms in the form library increased, a form was taking more than a minute to load. Which is totally unacceptable at user end. I also tried to apply a similar rule (Query using a data connection) to the text boxes on the form but for some unknown reason its not fetching the updated values from the form library. I am carefully putting an easy condition to trigger the last mentioned rule but its not giving the required result. Problem: Despite associated/connected with the secondary source columns, the form is not fetching the updated values on its own If I associate a (data query) rule whenever the form opens or loads, it takes ages to load If I associate a (data query) rule with the text boxes instead it

BIDS Connection Manager Cannot Connect to Remote Oracle Db

Hi All,
I'm not having much luck getting an 'Oracle Provider for OLE DB' remote connection in connection manager to work when creating an SSIS package in BIDS.

I've covered off all the steps in the following link

The local machine is running SQL 2005 Sp2 Enterprise Edition on W2003 Sp2 Standard Edition X64

Using the Oracle 'Net Configuration Assistant' I can connect successfully to the remote service

I'm using ODAC 10g Release 2.

The steps to reproduce the error are as follows

1. in BIDS after creating an SSIS Solution
2. Right click in the  Connection Manager and select new OLE DB Connection
3. Click 'New'
4. Select 'Oracle provider for OLE DB'
5. Under server I enter the service name that I created in the Oracle 'Net Configuration Assistant'
6. Enter the user name and password as I entered in the Oracle 'Net Configuration Assistant'
7. When I click 'Test Connection' I get the following error

Test connection failed because of an error in initializing provider. ORA-12154: TNS could not resolve the connect identifier specified

I've spent a lot of time trying to get this to work and tried othe

Connection string to connect with Sql Server 2008.

May  be it's a wrong place to ask the following question. Sorry for that. Our hosting provider has recently upgraded their database server from Sql Server 2005 to 2008 and I'm getting errors to connect with remote server from my development machine. Error Message "Invalid connection". Tried to find solution on net but couldn't find it.

I'm using .Net 1.1. Though we've updated versions 2.0,3.5 & 4.0 but due to some certain circumstances I've no way to update it. It's a web based project. The following connection string works fine for Sql Server 2000 & 2005 but not for 2008.

<add key="ConnectionString" value="Data Source=Remote Server's domain name;Initial Catalog=database name;User ID=user name;Password=surround;Persist Security Info=True;Pooling=false;Connect Timeout=45;" />

Remote Server's domain name indicates to remote db server like: test.mysite4now.com

database name for example: test_surround

user name like test_surround

password: surround.

Can anyone inform me what's wrong with the above connection string to connect to Sql Server 2008.

Cannot connect to SQL Server 2008 RS Express, only connection to SQL Server 2008 Express succeeds?

Hi all,

my experience with SQL Server tends to zero. I've recently installed the new SQL Server 2008 RS Express with Advanced Services on my VISTA-machine because this version is prerequisite for installing some sample databases. There already existed a simple version of SQL Server 2008 express installed together with an older Visual Studio Express version. I thought that one would be upgraded but in fact the setup program installed the new 2008 RS version side-by-side to the older version.

The SQL Server ConfigManager shows actually both servers as running. SQL Server 2008 express named as "SQLEXPRESS" (Vers. 10.0.2531.0; path: '...\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.SQLEXPRESS\MSSQL\Binn\') and the newer SQL Server 2008 RS express as "MSSQLSERVER" (Ver. 10.50.1600.1; path: '...\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Binn\'). But MS SQL Server Management Studio only lets me connect to the older SQLEXPRESS-Server, the new "MSSQLSERVER" doesn't even show in the "Connect-to-Server"-dialog.

What went wrong? I'd appreciate any help,

Invoking a web method fails with 'The underlying connection was closed: Unable to connect to the re

Hi all,

i am currently challenging a problem that suddenly started to happen in my production environment when invoking a WS method from a windows-service .NET app.

The windows service is waiting for requests incoming through MQ, unwraps these requests from an "MQ XML packet" and redirects these requests to the web service. This web service has only one web method, which is kind of "main entry point" for the underlying backend application.

This monday approx. 30% of attempts to invoke that web method are failing with message: The underlying connection was closed: Unable to connect to the remote server.

Imagemap connection to database query

I have an imagemap that works:

Protected Sub ImageMap1_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Web.UI.WebControls.ImageMapEventArgs) Handles ImageMap1.Click
Select Case (e.PostBackValue)
Case ("Dublin")
Label1.Text =

"You selected " & e.PostBackValue
Case ("Cork")
Label1.Text =

"You selected " & e.PostBackValue
Case ("Southern")
Label1.Text =

"You selected " & e.PostBackValue
Case Else
Label1.Text =

"You did not click a valid hot spot region."
End Select

All the postback values are correct. Instead of sending the postback value to a label I want to use this in a select statement with a database. How do I achieve this? The output should be sent to a gridview.

Many thanks.

The underlying connection was closed: Unable to connect to the remote server.

I get this error message when i kick off my web service to run. It gathers survey feedback from a database via http soap. Recently i put in a proxy that is required for access to internet. The web service started to fail that day as well. Can anyone tell me how i could hard code the proxy that should be used by the web service? I found this link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307220

and tried editing the machine.config file but that didn't fix my issue. Any Ideas?

I have two applications, a win form and a web app. I am using  sql server on a local network. I can open a connection to the sql server from the web app, but the win form app always fails when i try to open a connection. I get a TCP provider error of all sorts. I am using the same connection string for both apps.

Any Idea,

OLAP Query failures using an ADOMD Connection

Hello world,

I have a live working website (ASP.NET 3.5) that pulls data from an OLAP cube on a remote server without any problems. However I now need to move the website to a different web server, and for reasons unknown I cannot get the OLAP queries to work in the new location.

I have installed the same versions of .NET Framework (3.5) and ADOMD.NET (8.0) on both servers, and the website pages were copied across servers with no changes made, so this can't be a coding issue. However I get errors like the following when the new site tries to query the OLAP cube:

OLAP server error: Formula error (syntax error: invalid token: line 1, position 53, token: "&").

Any suggestion? I want to connect my OLAP without using HTTP connection...
