Move moss databases to new server

Posted By:      Posted Date: April 14, 2011    Points: 0   Category :C#

I have a two server farm. I want to move the databases to a new sql server. I have read http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc512725(office.12).aspx and I have been doing alot of research and came across this method http://blog.falchionconsulting.com/index.php/2008/06/moving-databases-the-easy-way/

I am wanting to know if anyone has tried either of these methods or is there any other suggestions that would help me. This is my first move and just want to get it done correctly.

Move all databases (SharePoint Server 2010)

I've just run through the steps on http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc512725.aspx to move all my SharePoint 2010 databases to a new SQL Server.

Initially the database was on the same server as my app (a full install, not single server farm) and I am trying to move them to a separate server. Both servers are running SQL 2008R2 and Windows Server 2008R2.

After reattaching all the databases to the new server, creating the alias on the web/app box and restarting all the services, I recieve the "Cannot connect to the configuration database." message when I try and browse to the Central Admin site.

What have I done wrong?

Cant move system databases of SQL Server 2008 (Clustered) running in Windows 2008 with Service SID e

I was trying to move system databases of SQL Server 2008 on clustered emvironment running on Windows 2008.

I remember while doing the cluster installation somewhere it gave me a recomended option of using Service SID. I think that is the culprit here. Because if you see the "Security" of the DATA folder containing all the MDF and LDF (by default location) you will find a Group named "MSSQLSERVER" is having full access to that directory.

While moving the system databases you need that account (MSSQLSERVER) given access to the parent directory containing the MDF and the LDFs, But unfortunately you cannot add that account manually. Even I tried XCOPY to make sure that while copying the ACLs gets transferred properly to the destination, even that failed.

I think it does provide a solid Security but at the expense of Maintenance, which I cant agree.

Also I forgot to tell you that this Sevice SID option is available if you are using Windows Vista / Windows 2008 or above,

Does anyone has any experience of moving the system databases with Service SID enabled in a cluster environment.

As a testing just try to copy/xcopy/robocopy any folder having MSSQLSERVER group in the ACL and see what happens .. If you are lucky like me then you will get ACCESS DENIED error.

Have anyone faced the same error? I h

Linq with two databases (oracle and sql server)

i have a problem to bring the data from the oracle (external database) and the sql server together (with similar data). The linq entities are linked to each other. The structure is like different countries with different cities and so on. To display these "non original linq objects" i need to put them into entities (linked to each other). Now i add some of them to my sql database. But for every entity i must check the connection to the other objects i don't want to add and delete them (otherwise linq will add all the connected objects, even those I don't want to add). If this goes wrong the whole input-method crashes. Is there any other possibility, except from checking every single entity and removing unwanted connections, to handle this procedure?
Thanks a lot, preg

Search Server Gatherer - Custom hierarchical protocol handler ISearchProtocol for MOSS 2010

Search server gatherer calls CloseAccessor() and shutdown() on ISearchProtocol after GetChunk() even if the FILTER_E_END_OF_CHUNKS is not returned. After calling shutdown() it stops calling the createaccessor() with new URL. I want to create a hierarchical indexing but I am not gatherer is not suporting this. The same piece of code is working fine in MOSS 2007, I am facing this issue in MOSS 2010 only. Is there anything changed in MOSS 2010 which is creating this issue?

VS Studio WorkFlow Failed on Start in MOSS 2007 ON Windows Server 2008 64 Bit

I have created a sequential sharepoint workflow in WSP Builder in my Sharepoint Server and Deployed it.

But the workflows says Failed on start and retrying ans stops there forever says couldn't start the workflow.

I repaired .NET Framework 3.5sp1 installed

 tried this

 1. I tried again, in C Prompt:  Lodctr "c:\Windows\Microsoft.Net\Framework\v3.0\Windows Workflow Foundation\perfcounters.ini"  it says initiation file cannot be found

2   i again tried this C prompt Lodctr /R "c:\Windows\Microsoft.Net\Framework\v3.0\Windows Workflow Foundation\perfcounters.ini"

it says reloaded  from the system restored

i am still getting the same error.

When i manually go to my  C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.0\Windows Workflow Foundation i can see a folder for SQL that's it nothing more than that..

I dont know what is happening i am trying it from 2 days and still no solution.

Does MOSS 2007 Support SQL Server 2008 R2 RTM version?

Hi, We have MOSS 2007 SP1 databases in SQL Server 2005 EE x64 with SP3. Now, we want to upgrade the SQL Server 2005 to SQL server 2008 R2 EE x64 RTM version. Does MOSS 2007 Support SQL Server 2008 R2 RTM version? If yes, please take me to the MS link where I can find this information. Thanks

(SQL Server 2008) Exporting entire databases to SQL CREATE/INSERT statements

Hi All, I'm looking for a way to export SQL Server 2008 (Express or otherwise) databases to CREATE/INSERT statements.  I've seen a million threads (give or take) with instructions for creating large (often illegible) TSQL scripts for the task.  However, I'm hoping that this isn't the only way by which to do it.  I have need to regularly back up the data from existing MS SQL Server DBs (which are used by some of our standard apps) to various other MySQL and PostgreSQL databases (which are used by PHP and Rails web front ends).  I need to export them from MS SQL Server 2008 to a general format (i.e. INSERT statements) and perform regex edits on the file as necessary. FYI, I've written a few applications that connect to the various DBs over ODBC, etc. and transfer the data row by row.  You can image how painful this process is... I realize that there are many tools that do this.  However, most of them approach the issue from the standpoint of migration, and not that of regularly scheduled backups.  Also, this tool will need to eventually be distributed so having to purchase a license for the migration app for each person/group simply isn't feasible. Anyway, if you guys have a quality, straightforward solution to this issue, it would certainly be appreciated. Best.

Hi all, We have a MOSS implementation setup that is now, as is always the case, growing beyond it's original design hardware. So what I now need to do is move this to a NLBS front end.  Currently the backend is on a SQL cluster and there is one front end web server. I have tried to find information about doing this on the Internet but cannot seem to find anything that describes how to do this. Can anyone point in the direction of some documentation that shows how to do this? I am sure we cannot be the only ones that need to expand our original MOSS design! Thanks.

SharePoint 2010 Server: Cannot manage all user profiles from upgraded MOSS SSP database

I have upgraded an SSP database to SharePoint 2010 and successfully performed User Profile Synchronization with Active Directory, however I cannot manage ALL of the user profiles in the database. I go to "Manage User Profiles" in Central Administration and perform a filtered search (i.e. I want all DOMAIN accounts beginning with "j" so I search for "DOMAIN\j" in Manage User Profiles), but I don't receive ALL the user profiles back. I receive about 8 in return when I know there are about 20 starting with "j". If I create a new AD account beginning with "j" it is successfully synched with SharePoint 2010 and I see it in the Manage User Profiles. I ran an stsadm -o sync to clear any old synchronization information, and the Forefront Synchronization Service appeared to pull in many changes to existing accounts (including ones I can't currently manage), but I still cannot manage them using "Manage User Profiles". I really need to be able to manage all the profiles so I can manually edit some fields. Can anyone please help? Thanks in advance.

Procedure to move all SP 2010 databases from SQL 2005 to SQL 2008 R2

I have a single SharePoint 2010 WFE with a single SQL 2005 64-bit backend.  I need to decomission the SQL 2005 server.  What is the best procedure to move all the SharePoint associated databases to SQL 2008 R2? I have already read this MS doc on moving all databases: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc512725.aspx So the actual move procedure is standard SQL fodder. What I'm not clear about is what to do about the "other" SharePoint databases and how to reassociate them once the DBs are on the new SQL server.  For example, the Usage and Health DB is going to "Wss_Logging" and it specifies my old SQL server.  It is greyed so I cannot chagne it in Central Admin.  How do I let SharePoint know that these databases have been moved too?

Sql server Report services integration with moss 2007 giving hard time.

Hey guys, I have 2 servers  in seperate domain one for database and other for moss 2007. SERVER 1 :     AD,DNS,SMTP,SQL SERVER 2005 sp3 .... SERVER 2:    MOSS 2007 APPLICATION SERVER with sp2 and october cumilative updates applied. i have even installed NDP20-KB913384-X86.exe hot fix for .net framework 2.0 access voilation error. In CA my server 2 version is When i installed sql server 2005 on server 1 during installtion for report server i choosed install but do not configure. Now I decided to integrate the sql server report services into sharepoint and did some research and found some articles on msdn which says in order to integrate the report services into sharepoint i need to have a minimal install of moss 2007 on server hosting report services (correct me if i am wrong). since i have only 2 servers i decided to install the minimal installation of moss 2007 on my server 1 ( Web front end only ). Here are the steps i followed for it Installed .NET framework 3.0 Installed moss 2007 sp2 Installed october cumuilative update for wss then same for moss 2007. Installed .net framework 2.0 NDP20-KB913384-X86.exe hot fix. and then ran the psconfig from command line as psconfig -cmd configdb -connect -server <SQLServerName> -database SharePoint_Config_ <dbname> -user <domainusername> -password <passw

need help moving System Center SQL Databases to new SQL Server about30 databases to be moved...

We are running various System Center products, SCSM, SCVMM, SCCM, DPM, OPALIS. and a few other servers all using the same SQL server, which currently is a VM. We have configured and built a new Physical box that will replace this. In the past we have moved SQL databases by doing a full backup and then restoring the backup on the new server, then renaming the servers, both network name and internal sql name.  This has worked fine in the past. However I've never had to move 30 databases before, nor have I had to move reporting services. Is there a better method. a recomended method?
