ResponseFormat.Json returns xml

Posted By:      Posted Date: April 14, 2011    Points: 0   Category :Windows Application

hello everyone!

i know im not the first with this problem, but i cant seem to find a working solution

when using a webservice set to return json, .net still wraps it in an XML wrapper.

i searched and tried many things

   1. i tried adding various httphandler settings to my web.config, as suggested in certain posts, but these had no effect. also i don't think its necessary as im working on a brand new win7/iis7.5/.net4 box. i read that since .net 3.5 there shouldn't be any problem. but there is!
   2. i tried with and without the responseformat.json decoration. my webservice returns valid json (i can parse it with parsejson, after extracting the string)
   3. i tried explicitly setting the contenttype and datatype. this causes an error complaining that the response was invalid json. which is right!

what is happening is very confusing, in IE , at least on my devbox, the response returns as an xml document where i can just use msg.text and easily get the json string, but in production i tested in FF and it returns as a document, with no "text" property.

heres my jquery

error: function (xhr, ajaxOptions, thrownError) {

Error (no data returned) when ResponseFormat:=WebMessageFormat.Json and attempting to serialize an I

I have am having an issue when attempting to return JSON data from a WCF Service.  I have tracked the issue down to the ResponseFormat:=WebMessageFormat.JSON, but I am unable to make any further progress.

I am wanting the return types of my service to be an interface so that I have a little more control over the responses that are coming to my application.

I know that returning an interface requires the ServiceKnownType and requires KnowsType on the objects so that they can serialize properly.  I have an example working, however, when add a property with a class that inherits from iList things go bad.  The service returns nothing.  I have confirmed via Fiddler that the content-length of the response is 0.  However if I switch the ResponseFormat to WebMessageFormat.XML it works fine and all objects are returned.  I have included as much code (and probably more) as I think is necessary.  If something else is needed, let me know.

Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Code Notes:

If you comment out the DataMember Attribute on the Values property in TestResult class you will see that the code works perfectly when returning JSON.

If you change the return Type of the Values Property to be TestCollection instead of ITestCollection it works as well.

SqlCommand.ExecuteNonQuery() returns -1 when doing Insert / Update / Delete

Sometimes you end up with a return value of -1 when using the SqlClient.SqlCommand.ExecuteNonQuery method.

Why is that?

Well, the ExecuteNonQuery method is there for statements for changing data, ie. DELETE / UPDATE /INSERT, and the returned value are the number of rows affected by that statement.

When checking the documentation we can see that there are some conditions that return -1.

For UPDATE, INSERT, and DELETE statements, the return value is the number of rows affected by the command.

When a trigger exists on a table being inserted or updated, the return value includes the number of rows affected by both the insert or update operation and the number of

rows affected by the trigger or triggers. For all other types of statements, the return value is -1. If a rollback occurs, the return value is also -1.

WCF Data Service to JSON example? v4

I would like to take WCF Data Service and produce JSON output to consume on various mobile apps.

Can anyone give me a how-to on the JSON part?  I.e., what is different than normal XML outut?

Json Deserialization is giving error in IronPython

Writing Data to database with jQuery Forms, ASMX Webservice, & JSON - help!

Can someone point me in the right direction on how to submit data from a jQuery form to a ASMX webservice? I have gotten everything on the form ready to be submitted to the database and now I am stuck on how to send it over using $.ajax(). Everything I have read tells me how to get data from a webservice and display it with jQuery, but not the other direction nor how to access the json data within the within the webservice service(similar to a Request.Form approach with ASP.NET forms).

In other words:

1. What do I need to do to my webservice to make sure it can receive data from the jQuery form.

2. What do I need to do in jQuery to receive an acknowledgement the save on the server side was successful.

I can explain more if need be, but if there is a comprehensive tutorial on not only reading, but also WRITING data with jQuery, JSON, etc. I would love to get pointed in that direction.

sqldatasource's filter returns too few records

I have a puzzling issue.  This is in asp.net 2.0, using vb.  I have a gridview that is bound to a sqldatasource.  Here is the datasource code:

<asp:SqlDataSource ID="fellowsSqlDataSource" runat="server"
        ConnectionString="<%$ ConnectionStrings:PFPFellowsConnectionString %>"
        ProviderName="<%$ ConnectionStrings:PFPFellowsConnectionString.ProviderName %>"
        FilterExpression="{0}"  >
            <asp:SessionParameter Name="psuaccessid" SessionField="username" />

JSON Deserialize into Entity Framework Object and setting the DataMemberAttribute "Name="

I'm in the process of deserializing a JSON object into an Entity Framework object.  The property names in the JSON do not match up totally with the property names in the Entity Framework Objects. What I'd like to do is set "Name=" on the  "DataContractAttribute" for the table and the "DataMemberAttribute" for the properties in the Designer.cs file.  I tried setting these in the Designer.cs file manually just to see if it would work - which it did (using JSON.Net) but of course when I went into the .edmx designer I lost all my changes.  Is there a way to do this?

Thanks in advance

Linq to SQL returns null for DateTime fields.

I have a linq to sql entity class in which I declared some DateTime fileds like this:

[Column(DbType = "smalldatetime")]
public DateTime? StartDate { get; set; }

And this is how I fetch data form repository:

return repository.Logs.OrderByDescending(l => l.LogID).FirstOrDefault();

All non DateTime fields are filled properly but all datetimes are null.

[Column(DbType = "smalldatetime")]

        public DateTime? StartDate { get; set; }

Adding carriage returns between 2 dynamically created controls in an HtmlTableCell

The title pretty much explains it. Here is what i'm trying to do...

 Private Sub LoadGrid_CommentsField(ByVal Row As HtmlTableRow, ByVal BookingNumber As String, ByVal CommentsText As String)
  Dim Txt As TextBox
  Dim Cmd As ClickOnceButton.ClickOnceButton

  Txt = New TextBox
  Txt.ID = "txtComment_" & BookingNumber
  Txt.CssClass = "TFAppControls"
  Txt.TextMode = TextBoxMode.MultiLine
  Txt.MaxLength = 500
  Txt.Width = New Unit(95, UnitType.Percentage)
  Txt.Text = CommentsText

  Row.Cells(cComments).InnerHtml &= "<br/>"

  Cmd = New ClickOnceButton.ClickOnceButton
  Cmd.DisableAfterClick = True
  Cmd.Text = "Save Comments"
  Cmd.ID = "cmdSaveComments_" & BookingNumber
  Cmd.CssClass = "TFAppButtons"
  Cmd.EnableViewState = False
 End Sub

On the line where i try and update the InnerHtml, i get the following error; "Cannot get inner content of  because the contents are not literal."

Picker returns nothing for BDC column in custom list

Playing with the BDC for the first time, running into some issues adding a Business Data column to a custom list.

I believe my ADF file is solid. I've been able to import that just fine and can use the application to drive various BDC-specific webparts (a Business Data List or Business Data Item, for example). It also seems to work when I manually enter information in my NewForm.aspx field and click the Check Names button (it verifies my entry and underlines it, creates link to profile when I view the list data).

If I try to use the picker, I get nothing. Enter a name I know is valid or a % and click the magnifying glass icon and I very briefly get the "Please Wait" message, then just an empty set with "Type into the search box above then press "Enter" to start your search" where my results should be.

Any pointers? Thanks.

unable to use wcf service with json in asp.net

I have developed a wcf service for asp.net ajax client. It includes the following steps.

(1) Created WCF sevice contract with the operation "DoWork()" which will take string as input and retun string as output.

(2)Implemented the above operation contract(attributed the implementation class with aspnetcompatibility requirement as enabled).

(3)Added the webscriptenabled to endpoint in web.config file.

(4)Hosted the wcf servie.

(5)Downloaded the javascript file from the service.(e.g.,http://localhost/service1.svc/js)

(1)Opend new asp.net webapplication.

(2)Added the downloaded .js file.

(3)Given the scripts path for ajaxscript manager as both .js file and service url.

<asp:ScriptManager ID="id1"

Customizing the Converter for Json.NET

Many recently days, I thought about Json.net library that implemented by James. It is really a good library that I have ever used. I really impressed about many Converters that this library expose for user. I can list some converter of json.net at here:

+ BinaryConverter
+ BsonObjectIdConverter
+ DataSetConverter
+ DataTableConverter
+ EntityKeyMemberConverter
+ HtmlColorConverter
+ IsoDateTimeConverter
+ JavaScriptDateTimeConverter
+ KeyValuePairConverter
+ RegexConverter
+ StringEnumConverter
+ XmlNodeConverter

As you see, json.net have many converters, but still not enough for our necessary. So in this post, I try to explorer about 2 converters that I thought it is very useful for us. That are ArrayConverter and Object Converter (it is named by me). In 2 converter, I mainly implement it for return the object's interface, so it can be re-use and extension better. Now this is my code for implement it:
+ CustomObjectCreationConverter

make json call to send an email

the aspx:

<div class="contactSubmit">
                <asp:ImageButton ID="ibSubmit" runat="server" ValidationGroup="vgContact" /></div>

the jquery :

$(document).ready(function () {
            // Add the page method call as an onclick handler for the div.
            $(".contactSubmit").click(function () {
                    type: "POST",
                    url: "Home.aspx/GetDate",
                    data: "{}",
                    contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8",
                    dataType: "json",
                    success: function (msg) {
                        // Replace the div's content with the page method's return.

The problem is that I need to use the text in a text box in my webmethod, and I can't because it's static, this results in a compilation error:

    public static string SendContactForm()

VS2005 calling VS2010 asmx service returns empty string

Anyone have any experience with this?

We are using VS 2005 for the front end, and vs 2010 for the web services part (asmx), not wcf yet.

Web service works just like the vs2005 when run locally, no problems.

Connecting to it from a test app returns an empty string. Connecting to a 2005 app doesn't!

Anyone run into this before or have a suggestion? Surely vs 2005 can connect to web services from a later version?
